Camaro - Power Steering Belt Is Constantly Slackening

Feb 18, 2014

I have a 350 chevy small block in my 79 camaro and the power steering belt is constantly slackening. I have not driven the car more than a few hundred yards because its not yet street legal so it is not becoming loose due to it just stretching like normal over the first 100 miles. I have a brand new power steering belt and have replaced the power steering pump as well. i have tightened the belt twice now after i have just run the car for a couple minutes without it going anywhere and each time it slips back to where it is loose again. I have tightened all the bolts and it keeps doing it so I'm not sure what to do now.

Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: 2010 - Power Steering Reservoir Is Constantly Losing Fluid

I have a 2010 F150 4.6 3V... The power steering reservoir is constantly losing fluid. I've purchased the truck, used, a few months ago, bought a warranty. The dealership has had it multiple times now and can't find the leak. They just keep replacing hoses and the problem keeps occurring. Also worth noting, the truck has 6" lift with 35s. I've have also pulled the radiator cap and found a decent amount of what looks to be sludge/oil inside. Dealership says it's probably just bad coolant.

Golf IV R32 :: Slipping Belt With Loss Of Power Steering

Due to being low, and taking my splash guards off to put on my skid plate, in heavy rain, my belt I guess gets wet, slips and I lose power steering. I can hear it screech.

I didn't think that would be the case for snow, but sure enough after plowing through my driveway to go to work it was slipping screeching and loss of power.

Impala - Chevrolet :: Lost Power Steering After New Fan Belt

I just replaced a serpentine belt on a 2004 chevy Impala. Now the power steering will loose some of its "power". I at first loosened the bolt on the tensioner not knowing how to properly make it release, then tightened the bolt back after realizing my error. I know it did not move though.

Eclipse - Mitsubishi :: 1997 - Power Steering Belt Went Bad?

My son called me today and said his power steering belt went bad. He says it had been making noise for a while- at least that is what he thinks the noise is- a kind of high whining sound when you first start the car? I don't know if that makes any sense or not. He also said that today not only does his power steering not work, the car is now acting strangely electrically speaking. The speedometer and the radio have stopped working completely. Is any of this related? I am completely clueless about electrical problems- other than the possibility of some blown fuses or a wire that shorted out. The car is a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. He is out of town at school I don't have the luxury of looking at it myself to troubleshoot or give any more particulars.

Camry :: 2002 V6 - How To Tighten Power Steering Belt

I can't remember how to tighten my power steering belt. I've loosened the 12 mm bolt that locks the PS pump in in place. But how to I increase the tension? This is killing me, because I replaced the timing belt in July. I guess I've since killed the brain cells that I used when i put the power steering belt back on.

Ford Aerostar :: Power Steering Belt Slipping

The power steering seems to work fine and dandy. But when I turn the wheel all the way to the right, or to the left, the serpentine belt squeals, indicating that the power steering seems to have faulty valve or whatever. What is causing this problem?

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Power Steering Acting Up Like Belt Is Slipping

Well, two years after I replaced the pump bearing and the power steering is acting up like the belt is slipping. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes the steering gets jerky and hard.

The fluid level was fine, but I changed out the old stuff anyway, the belt is fine and not loose. I also pulled the pump apart to inspect it and it still looks as good as new.

When it acts up at a stop, it will squeal, but like I said, the belt is not loose. It's almost as if the rack is bottoming out against the bump stop (it's not) or the valve that lets excess pressure is dumping pressure randomly.

I took the valve apart with the pump and it looks fine, no scratches. Do the rack or valve go bad? If so, what was that like and could my rack have a seal leaking inside?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: AC / Power Steering Belt Squealing Intermittently

The AC/power steering belt in my 2004 Santa Fe, 2.4L has intermittently squealed for some time, but lately the squeal has gotten louder. Initially it only happened when the compressor was on, but now it happens when the compressor is off. I have not experienced a loss in steering power but I did notice that the power steering fluid appears to be discolored. I have replaced the belt and re-tensioned it several times hoping this would solve the issue, but it hasn't. I intend to take the belt off again and see if the pulleys all spin freely. When I replaced the belt initially, everything did spin freely. My guess is that the power steering pump may be shot and is putting excessive load on the belt, however, there is no PS pump "whine" and again, no loss of power steering. It looks like I should also check for separated pulleys.

Subaru - Legacy :: 1999 - Power Steering - Bad Belt / Leak?

As I was driving home the other day, I noticed the steering wheel on my 99 Subaru Legacy (130,000+ miles) became considerably stiffer than ever before. I pulled into my driveway (where, incidentally, the wheel loosened up) and checked the power steering fluid. Unsurprisingly, it was low.

I haven't been on the road since, but I did turn the car around in the driveway. Aside from the wheel gently stuttering or pausing initially (it's done this when cold for a while now -- I always assumed it was a loose belt or something) the wheel seemed normal.

I made an appointment with a mechanic and described my symptoms. He said he'd have to take a look but suspected it was a bad power steering pump. Is this the only possibility? Could it be a bad belt or a leak somewhere in the system? If it is the pump, how much should I expect to pay to have it fixed?

Accent LC (2000-05) :: No Power Steering - Belt Screech During Cold Start

Awful belt noise that erupts during cold starts. I realize that this usually means a replaced belt. I want to know how to go along diagnosing which belt and then how to replace it. Here's the symptoms:

1. Awful belt screech when turned on, goes away within 20 seconds
2. Belt noise comes back when turning the wheel to back out of a right driveway
3. The STEERING WHEEL feels like it has no power steering WHILE the screeching is happening.
4. The headlights (when on) dim for about 3 seconds
5. All these symptoms happen when the temperature is below freezing and it's a cold start.

How is the belt screeching connected to the steering wheel being tough I turn?

Have a 2009 Spectra and the power steering belt slips when turning the wheels and starting the car. Assumed it was the pump and replaced it with a salvage part ... same problem. Entirely possible we got another bad pump but seems unlikely it would exhibit the exact same symptoms. Is this a common problem with this model? Is there anything else in the system that could cause the pump to seize up when turning the wheel?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Strange Spark Noise Coming From Power Steering Belt Region

I have a 2003 Santa Fe, 2.4L.

Last night, I added some power steering stop leak to my PS system, but I accidentally spilled some below the reservoir. Soon after, that area of the engine starting making a consistent "spark"-type noise. I think it has something to do with the belt, because when I turn on AC, the noise gets a little faster in rhythm.

I say "spark" noise because it sounds like an electrical spark, rather than clicking or whining.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2000 - Power Steering Pulley Wobbles Slightly / Belt Squeaking

I purchased a new 2000 mazda b4000 2 weeks ago and the belt was squeaking and I knew I had to change the water pump so I replaced it and the squeaking didn't went away... I thought maybe my idler pulley bearing was worn out cause I could see it wobble back and fourth when the engine was running... Replaced it, still squeaking! Change my belt still squeaking! look further turns out my power steering pulley wobbles slightly. I'm thinking about trying a gator back belt and see if the squeaking goes away. Could it be dangerous to run the truck as it with a slight misalignment in the power steering pulley? or it'll be a must replacement asap?

Chevrolet - Camaro :: Loud Backfire And Loss Of Power

I own a 1988 Camaro Iroc-Z with a 5.7 350 TPI motor. I was driving the car onto I-95 at a speed of 65 when I heard a loud boom under my car, and pulled over to see what had happened. I couldn't see what happened, so I drove the car slowly to a friends garage to find the exhaust pipe from the converter back to the muffler had split and blew apart. I took my car to another shop to repair the pipe, but when I left the shop after the repair, I accellerated to about 40 mile per hour, I get another loud backfire and loss of power. The pipe is still intact, but I cannot figure out what is causing the backfire. My friend from the first garage says it is a failing fuel pump. I never heard of such a thing to be honest.I am at a loss and I have to correct the issue soon, as this is my only car to drive.

Celica :: 1997 - Belt Squeal Sound On Turning Steering Wheel

We recently purchased our 17 year old son a 97 celica, Problem, when he goes out in the morning to start it, it sounds like a is belt squealing really really bad. We changed the tensioner and it stopped for about a week and then returned. We sprayed the belt with belt dressing to determine which belt it was, one at a time, it was the one that goes to the alternator, so we put a new belt on it, the sound stopped this time for a few days and returned.

This happens whether it is wet or dry, but seems to be worse when dry. The sound lasts for a few minutes and usually goes away. I thought it sounded (the actual sound) like power steering. The sound does get worse when we turn the steering wheel, then when the steering wheel is straightened it goes away. My son said now it periodically will do it will drive for no apparent reason and go away.
