Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shudder Feeling When Back Up Or Go Forward In Low

Jan 17, 2010

My 2004 Lariat with 110,000 miles has a shudder feeling when I back up or go forward in low. This only happens when I first take off, as far as I can tell. Would this be transmission clutches slipping or rear end clutches slipping, or something else? What test can I do to isolate the problem?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Severe Shudder Around 45 - 50 Mph

I have troubleshot this all night. I bought one coil pack and changed one at a time. The problem is still there. I changed the plugs around 90,000 miles. it was doing it before and after. I just put a 6 inch lift and same tires just heavier and it does it even harder. Still around 45-50 mph. it feels like my truck is about to fall apart.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shudder When Turning Right With 10% Acceleration?

I have a shudder that happens when turning right at a grade of about 10% while accelerating, and only on that condition. While making a routine drive somewhere, there's a turn with that one condition. Every time it shudders. It doesn't bother me because it happens so rarely...

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shudder In Rear End When Shifting

I have an 06 FX4 5.4 with the Evolution programmer. I am bringing the truck to Ford tomorrow to trade it in. I took out the programmer after returning the truck to the stock power level. Now the rear end has a wicked shudder when shifting, especially going first to second and much worse under heavy acceleration. The dealership drove the truck before I returned it to stock so the deal is made but if they drive it even a few hundred yards on the lot they will definitely notice it. I reprogrammed it to level 2 and the shudder is gone, but they told me to take the Edge out so what the heck should I do.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 1998 - Acceleration Shudder At 83k Miles

I finally upgraded from my 1998 F150 5.4 to a 2008 F150 Lariat supercrew 4x4 5.4 3v with 83k miles. I've had the truck about a week and have already noticed an issue. During light to moderate acceleration, I notice a slight hiccup in the 30-40 mph range. This "hiccup" is best described as a quarter second dead spot in the throttle. At times, I have noticed an additional hiccup between 20-30 mph that does the same thing. Occasionally, I will also feel a slight vibration on take off. It's important to note that if I accelerate at a quicker pace or really get on it, I can't feel the issue. I have also had a tough time replicating the issue when I deactivated overdrive. Not to say it wouldn't do it, but I really couldn't tell if it was doing it. Also, I've noticed that when I really get on it, It takes maybe a second to catch before accelerating. (From what I've read, that's common for 5.4s though, just thought I'd note it)

I have had spark plug and coil pack issues out of my 1998 model, but they felt different than what this truck is doing. Is it possible that this is the same issue but is manifesting itself differently? I briefly spoke with my mechanic and he seems to think it sounds like a torque converter issue. He checked for codes and none were showing or pending in the computer. Transmission shifts good. Fluid is a pinkish orange color, and there are no metal shavings on the oil dipstick. I started to notice the truck would sometimes shift a little hard into 4th. I took the truck by my mechanic and he rode with me. I was able to replicate the original issue. He told me it felt like something in the transmission. He said that my fluid smelled a little burned to him, but it was still a pinkish orange color. He said he would service the transmission and adjust the bands. The truck has 83k miles so I'm not too worried about a major transmission problem. He said he was fairly certain the servicing would correct the issue. I'm also going to have him put a new set of coils and plugs on as well. Am I missing anything?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Sporadic Shudder During Slow Throttle From 40 - 50

I have a 2007 f150 lariat with 88000 miles on it that I just bought and during slow throttle from 40-50. I am getting a sporadic shudder right when it goes into overdrive is worse when going up a light grade it goes away when i get to about 60 and whenever i give it full throttle it acts really sluggish like the tranny is slipping but it shifts very smooth.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2006 - Engine Shudder - Low Speeds With AC On

We have a 2006 F150 w/new engine, new everything but transmission and cat. converter. When driving in warm weather with the AC on and at low speeds or idle the engine will knock and want to cut out but you rev and turn off the AC and it stops. Only with AC on. We replaced fuel filter, fan throttle took to dealer and updated the software which it stopped for 3 days and started again today. Could it have to do with AC compressor or low refrigerant?

Prius (2004-09) :: Brake Failure / Locked Up - Car Wouldn't Go Forward Or Back

Driving yesterday, (slowly down bumpy gravel road). My 2005 Prius locked up, the red BRAKE and the yellow (ABS) indicator lights came on. The car wouldn't go forward or back. I tried setting the emergency brake then releasing it - nothing. Still couldn't go forward or backward. I shut it off, turned it back on, nothing, tried setting the emergency brake then releasing it - I finally was able to drive, but the indicator lights were still on and when I tried to brake, there was nothing, nothing, nothing, then BAM the brakes grabbed and locked up. (This happened several times in a few blocks as I was cautiously trying to test the car out.)

I parked got out my owners manual which said "STOP, contact Toyota Dealer" so I had my car towed (first time ever for her to be towed) to my mechanic (he's out hunting, so someone else at the shop looked at it.)

The shop called and said it was showing a code of 1247 and said that it was a "malfunction of the brake pedal". They said they cleared the code and the lights went out. Their mechanic is going to take it for a test drive trying several 'braking scenarios'. (they better not wreck my car).

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Rumble / Shudder In Truck On Initial Acceleration

Just rejoined this Ford gang after years absence. Used to own "The Muny Pit", a '79 F-150 4WD monster with a '69 429... constantly breaking something. Anyway, where to look on my '08 F-150 XLT 4WD with a 5.4, 83,000 miles. Searched the search bar for my title and found a post on an '00 Expedition describing similar issue than mine... for about 6 months now when I accelerate either from stop or a crawl; forward or reverse; more so when turning, but does do it wheels straight.

Upon initial acceleration I have this horrendous rumble / shudder in the truck, like the grinding metal bearing sound/feeling felt when the pinion bearing went out on my '79 (only felt it seconds before the 9" rear pumpkin exploded). Once rolling it stops. I have checked all wheel bearings.. I have check all the suspension joints... everything looks fine, no obvious issues. The only suspension mod I've done is a 1.5" leveling kit when brand new. On the Expedition two replys suggested changing the transmission/transfer case fluids claiming it cured their vehicles.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shudder When Taking Off From A Stop Or A Very Slow Speed?

Looking at a truck at a dealership. 04 F150 Lariat 5.4 3v? 2wd SuperCrew 148k miles. Bone stock besides the bedliner.

Truck is pretty nice besides these 4 things. Kind of a shudder when taking off from a stop or a very slow speed. Adjustable pedals don't work.

New brakes, but possibly the rears are dragging a bit. Was able to turn them in neutral and the rear on jacks. Extra, guessing because of the newer looking battery, some systems lack data from the OBD2

I'm mainly concerned about the shudder from a complete stop/1-2mph. At the dealer, to leave the lot, the driveway was elevated. I think it showed very well climbing that hill. As it was noticed and played with the gas a bit. Otherwise, you stomp the gas, it may shudder for a second or two, (3-5 times?) once it hits about 3000 rpm in 1st, its fine. Only ever seemed to do it in 1st and never any other gear, never on any gear changes.

We lifted the rear end up on a jack and fiddled around. Put it in neutral and spun the wheels, tried to mess with the drive shaft... According to dad, who was looking at it with me said it was fine and that it's normal to have a little bit of slop, but I didn't notice any real slop myself, tried to push on the driveshaft on the transmission side and I think it may have moved a bit but it didn't feel loose or clang or anything. Although I didn't get to push on it too hard because he was rotating the driveshaft at the time.

I assume new fluids in engine and trans. My dad said something about old oil marks on the transmission pan area or something. Both to the fill line.

One thing that I wonder about is how long this truck has been sitting. I wonder about the differential clutches. I'm not that sure what it really has for the rear end. But google had mention of clutch packs in the rear. I wonder if because it's been sitting that the oil has settled out of the clutches or something. There was a mess of silicon on the rear diff cap area. Couldn't tell if it was new or not. I think we put 10-20 miles on it at least and only looked under it for maybe a half hour... Still did the clunk/shudder at a start from a stop, when we returned it.

So, what could be causing this clunk/chatter when talking off from a stop/1-2mph roll?

Axle wrap?
Differential Clutches?
Differential?
Driveshaft?
Transmission?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Limited Slip Shudder During Acceleration On Turning

I picked up a 2004 F150 a few weeks ago. It has the limited slip 3.73 rear end. During acceleration on turning, I'm feeling quite a bit of chatter out of the rear end. I've read the TSB on it, and I'm wondering how much it'll cost to get the clutchpacks replaced in the rear differential.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Engine Shudder At 45mph Or While Going Up 4 - 6 Degree Hill

My 2004 started shuddering at 45mph or while going up a 4-6 degree hill. It was well past the suggested 100,000 mile spark plug change. I thought about changing the plugs myself until I heard that they could possibly break and would be difficult to remove. I took the truck to a shop and had the plugs changed.

For about 2 days it ran okay, but the shudder returned and we got PO303 (mis-fire cylinder #3), PO316 (mis-fire on start-up), and PO171 (system to lean, bank one) Codes. The shop replaced the fuel injector on cylinder #3 and again the truck ran okay for about 2 days. My son and I cleaned the other three injectors on bank one, cleaned most of the sensors and the MAF.

That work cleared the PO171 Code, but we still had a mis-fire on cylinder #3. We swapped the spark plugs between #1 and #3 and got a mis-fire on cylinder #1. We replaced the plug on cylinder #1 and that cleared the code. The truck is running great.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Shudder Intermittently When Turning From Stop?

This spring I installed a Ford OEM limited slip unit in my 05 F 150. Recently I notice a brief, intermittent shudder when turning right or left from a stop sign. Does not do it all the time. I don't notice this any other time. The Valvoline synthetic oil I used said the Ford additive was not needed. Is this the "nature of the beast", should I be concerned, should I put the additive in anyway?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Shudder At 65 Or 75 Mph - Check Engine Light Came On

I have a 2005 f-150 with the 5.4 engine. Bought it new and now it has 107,000 miles on it. Recently,it would have a shudder at 65 or 75 mph then the passing gear would kick on and it worked perfectly. The warning check engine light came on,then,when it acted up it would flash intermittently. Took it in to the dealership and put it on the diagnosis machine. Said cylinders 2,3, and seven were not steady etc?? So,after he took it out and drove it he said those particular cylinder walls were scored. I put in a K-N air filter at about 50,000 miles,and he said that they do not seal properly and dust got by the filter into the intake and got into the engine and did this damage. One think he found was a bad coil on one cylinder and replaced it. And just as he said,when I got on the road home I romped on it and it cut out and the intermittent signal showed again! He said that that would happen and it did.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Significant Shudder At Highway Speeds When Starting Up An Incline

I have an '05 F150 5.4L with 110k miles on it. Bought it used about 2-3 years ago and have had on-going ignition system problems. The current problem is a significant shudder/shake/vibration that occurs when driving 50mph+ (easy to reproduce around 65-70) on the freeway, when starting up a minor, but noticeable incline. This is an incline that doesn't require much additional throttle, and this trouble occurs with cruise control on and off. the truck starts shuddering pretty rough during the incline. However, if I release the accelerator (and go up incline with slightly lower speed) or give lots of gas on accelerator the shudder usually stops. The shudder always clears after the incline when returning to flat road and just cruising.

This occurred on a recent trip a few times and I pulled the following codes (in order):

P0356 (once) : Ignition Coil F (6) Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0302 (recurring): misfire on cylinder 2

I have since purchased and replaced the coil on #2. This did not resolve the problem. I have replaced coil on #6 in the last year...

Because I saw a suggestion somewhere on the net around this problem while searching, that this could be related to OD, I tried disabling OD and enabled OD on an incline today to test after replacing COP on #2 and it seemed to resolve the issue to turn OD off. Not sure if related...?

Other observation: Cab of truck often smells of gas just after starting the truck. Mentioned this to the shop, but they didn't find anything obvious.

Short history of codes and work that has been done:

Sometime in early 2011: Ford service dept did this work.
First failure was coil bad on #7. Tech swapped 7 & 8 to verify the problem followed the coil. Then when the problem DID follow the coil, he replaced #8 with new.

05/2011 MacKenzie Ford changed all plugs

12/2011 - swapped out COP on #7.

02/2012 - P0306 - Now, COP #6 is reported as bad.

November/December 2012
P2104 P Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) - Forced Idle
P2112 P TAC Stuck Close
P2111 TAC Stuck Open

I did throttle body clean - removed it and used TB cleaner. replaced...

Late December 2012 - while driving on freeway at speeds 50+, but easily reproduced around 60 after starting up a slight incline. symptom is heavy shudder/shake. Possibly resolved by turning OD off.
P0356 (once) : Ignition Coil F (6) Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0302 (recurring) : Misfire on cylinder 2

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shudder And Shake From Rear End When Accelerate Only In A Turn Left Or Right

In my case, from a stop, when I accelerate only in a turn left or right I get a shudder and shake from my rear end and it seems to be worse when the truck or air temp is colder.

well I went with the most basic thing first, popped the diff cover off, drained all the fluid, wiped out as much as I could get out of the collection area in the bottom. put a new gasket on and a little rtv, replaced cover. pulled the plug and cleaned off the shavings from the magnet and put new oil in it (I used Valvoline 75-90 with the friction modifier already in it, said limited slip right on the bottle)

test drove it around the block about a hundred times making left and right turns and the shudder and shake seemed to constantly decrease until it was perfectly smooth and noiseless!!! so that seemed to be an easy fix however I will report back to see what happens when I take it out cold in the morning.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2006 Truck Starts To Skip And Shudder Under Acceleration At Around 40 - 45 MPH

I just bought a 2006 F150 with the 5.4 triton motor. Under acceleration at around 40-45, the vehicle starts to skip and shudder.

Based on what I read online and the fact that I pulled a code for a #1 cyl misfire, I assumed that i just need to change the plugs, and I am trying to scheduule that now.

I just read another post about the TC not locking up due to needing the filter and fluid changed and a way to fix that would be to take OD off and see if it still does it.

When I drive with the od off, it does not do it but i am now confused since i got the one code for a misfire.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Truck Doesn't Really Want To Move Forward When Let Go Off Of The Brake

What should the idle be at for a 2004 f150 fx4. When I first start the stuck it jumps to about 1200 or so and then after a few seconds settles at about 500 and stays there at all stops. It seems to be smooth but when I let go of the brake, the truck doesn't really want to move forward. It is a crew cab so I know there is some weight there. If anything is wrong, what are some possible fixes.

Golf V R32 :: Shudder When Move Forward From Stop

When I am stopped and remove my foot from the brake, the car shudders as it moves forward. This happens when I do not give it any throttle. The idle forward is jerky...like it pulses. It feels like when you let the clutch out too slow on a manual trans. The DSG in all it's techno-glory should be able to release it's clutch(s) smoothly one would think? It happens when I am waiting in line at a stop sign or in traffic...anytime I need to idle forward slowly. I've been driving it for less than a week...it has 320 miles and I'm keeping it under the limits for break-in (BORING). Anyway, the thought of taking it for service at this point is depressing..
