I have a 99 Mountaineer AWD 5.0 (143K) and having some issues with it. O/D light is flashing once in awhile so decided to check the codes.
- P07401 (Torque converter)
- P1728 (Transmission slip)
The truck shift fine and no having really issues when driving even if there is a weird noise around 70mph.
The below is for a 175k mile '02 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L with 5R55W trannie that has previously had somewhat of a whining sound in 2nd gear (I thot it was rear differential). Note: I just changed the fluid & filter myself last week due to its shifting being a little harsh. Then, this past Sunday, the O/D light started flashing after about 5 min of driving (but the CEL is NOT on). It also did so the next two times I drove it after that.
1. Any cheapest reader available at Adv Auto that can get these, I assume, Ford-specific transmission codes?
2. I tried a co-worker's dated Snap-on MicroSCAN (#EESC307A) that indicated all was good. Its software was dated 2002, if it's capable of getting what I need (for cheap, if an update is possible)?
3. I have an Android tablet and my wife has an iPhone. Any Torque app (or other) used in conjunction with one of those bluetooth OBDII readers, provide me with the fault codes I need?
I have a 2003 mountaineer v-6 awd drives pretty good but od light is always flashing even if ignition switch is open and truck not started..and check transmission on message display also..the only thing that i feel its really tight on turns as if it wants to lock up but once steering gets straight it runs fine... I know that a regular scanner cant pull codes I got to go to transmission shop but chances are there gonna tell me its trans time....
View 6 RepliesI test drove my truck yesterday for the first time with the newly rebuilt transmission. I was gentle with the right foot and all seemed well. Once out on the main road it shifted by itself into overdrive for the first time and immediately the O/D light started flashing. I drove it home and shut her off. I test drove it 2 more times leaving overdrive off, no issues. With a snap-on scanner hooked up I let it go into overdrive and O/D light started flashing again, not immediately maybe 5 seconds after shifting into O/D.
Codes are:
p1316 IDM codes detected
P0717 Turbine speed sensor circuit fault
P0715 Turbine speed sensor circuit fault
P0500 VSS fault
10 minutes ago was my last test, O/D flashes only after it has shifted into overdrive. I checked the transmission wire harness and all connections are tight, trans oil level is good & trans temp never went above 150. Could this be a faulty VSS?
2002 7.3 4R100 ... The truck started flashing the O/D light pulling a 9K lb trailer on the highway.
The transmission codes read were P0705 (Range Selector) and P0873 (bad 3-4 shift - RPMs did not drop).
On the highway, the TCC seemed to lock up fine in 4th (OD button was set to leave O/D ON). When the truck would downshift (not often) then it would sometimes would rev high when it downshifted. It was like 3rd was slipping or it was downshifting into 2nd instead of 3rd. I think it was doing a 4-2 downshift but not 100% sure.
What confuses me is that if it is doing a 4-2 downshift then it would have to change state of both valve body solenoids. Is it possible that it was doing a 4-3 shift but solenoid was sort of sticking? Trans fluid looks fine.
I have read other posts where people had same problem (titled 3rd gear slipping), but they never seemed to resolve the problem in the thread. How likely is it that the solenoid is the problem? It seems to drive fine in 3rd when the O/D OFF button is pressed and O/D is not allowed.
I am driving home from a meeting yesterday and I notice that my O/D off light is flashing. I drive home approx. 25 miles and the truck still seems to be running and shifting fine. The only time the tranny seems to have any issues is when I am slowing down. Once the speedo hits 25mph while slowing, the truck shifts kinda hard. Upshifting is still smooth and RPMs are still normal. Where I should go from here?

View 10 RepliesI have a 97 F350 5.8 with E40D trans. I bought the truck with it shifting hard thinking maybe a simple filter/fluid change would fix it. It may have worked a little but did not fix the issue. There were 3 or 4 codes that I have already cleared up with new parts. I am still getting a 327 (something with EGR?) and 629 (Converter clutch control circuit failure). These show up in KOEO and KOER self test. The O/D does not flash ( bulb does work).
Parts that have been replaced: VSS, MLPS, new connector going into solenoid pack (tabs were broken), TPS. Removed the trans wiring harness and there is no damage or loose connections. When I replaced the solenoid connector I noticed there was some trans fluid in the connection. I cleaned it the best I could and reinstalled with dielectric grease.
The truck runs fine and shifts in and out of every gear fine its just shifting hard. If I unhooked the battery it will shift perfect for 5-10 minutes but then the hard shifting returns.
The only other thing I can find with my research is maybe the solenoid pack needs replaced. I figured if I take it somewhere they are going to want to rebuild/replace transmission. It seems like it can't be something very major since it will shift fine when reset...
Had a front seal leak on my 2000 F250 V10 with 122000 miles. Since I've towed for years and the tranny had to be pulled I opted to just rebuild the whole tranny. I had problems from the beginning where it wouldn't shift into third and when I took my foot off the gas it would just go out of gear completely and just rev. After I stopped and started over, it would shift fine for the rest of the day.
Finally the O/D stem light started flashing and the mechanic did something to fix it. Since then it has shifted fine but when it went into overdrive the rpm would bump up and kind of slide into overdrive. Left the truck with the mechanic again for two weeks and it's better, sometimes revs and slides into overdrive not every time though.
My problem, besides the overdrive shifting, is it now takes forever to shift in to 4th gear. I have to take my foot off the gas to make it shift into 4th and overdrive won't kick in until 45 MPH. My gas mileage, while bad enough before all this, has now dropped another 2 mpg to around 7.5 to 8. I was thinking about taking it to a Ford dealer for some kind of analysis.
I bought this truck with a stock automatic transmission and 260k miles back in October expecting the transmission to be the first thing to go. Recently I had a transmission code, OD OFF light flashing, for the bad speed sensor which i got replaced. Then the OD OFF light started flashing after some hard driving when I would put into neutral or park so I took it back to the mechanic, Hanahan Truck and Auto in Sc. They looked into it and there wasn't any different code in the system but they noticed when you lay into it driving it slips some between 2nd and 3rd gears so that could cause the computer to put in a code.
They said usually a rebuild runs from $2k-2.5k and they also recommended a Jasper reman for roughly $2.8k which comes with a 100k mile 3yr warranty. So I figure replacing the transmission is probably the way to go. Any recommendations for a replacement. I've heard ATS and Sun Coast are decent options that I could build one. I'm looking to stay close to $3k. My truck is a 2000 F250 lariat 4x4 with 268k miles. I'm installing an S&B intake, 4" MBRP exhaust, and DP-Tuner's F6 chip when I get the transmission work done.
I have a 2005 explorer, eddie bauer (120k), which i really love driving. Recently, i have lights coming on in my dash: ABS, traction control and the 4wd light intermittently flashing. I went to Advance auto parts and they were able to read the codes, a B1155 - speed wheel sensor LF input circuit failure and a B1145 - speed wheel sensor RF input circuit failure. I have replaced both wheel bearing hubs (with the speed sensors) about 6 monthe ago. the connectors leading to the speed sensors are both showing 12v at the plug. Is the problem both my sensors have gone bad? Is there any way to test these sensors. I need to get this fixed quickly since i am due for an emission test very soon and it will not pass if any dash lights are on.

I already dropped the trans pan, looking for a step by step easy way to diagnose and find the short or if i need to replace any of the solenoids. I have voltmeter and taste light....
View 3 RepliesI have a 2003 ford ranger, it's on it 3 automatic transmission. Each transmission has had the same problem. The OVER DRIVE OFF light starts to flash, and when it shifts from 1st gear into second it shifts really hard, and shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd. When you turn the truck off and start it back up the OVER DRIVE OFF light does not come on. The second transmission lasted almost 30,000 miles. The 3rd transmission only made it 24 miles before the light started to flash. The 2 replacement transmissions have been Ford crate transmissions, installed by a Ford dealer. I have looked around on the Internet and no one has a answer for how to fix it, other then it's time for a new transmission. I think it's a computer issue, but the Ford transmission guy says its not ...
View 6 RepliesI have a 2006 F350 SRW 4WD 6.0 with 127000 miles on it. A couple of weeks ago it, pulling out of my driveway, it hesitated and tow haul started flashing. I had codes pulled and it showed P1780, P0751, and P2700. After turning off, codes were gone and tow haul off. Ran fine since then every day. Yesterday while going about 50 mph it started acting like it was in neutral (revving up), nothing happened when mashing the accelerator. Coasted to a driveway and truck would not move, only sounded like it was in neutral.

The O/D OFF light was flashing and I noticed some faint smoke and a terrible odor from the burning transmission fluid. I was told by a nearby transmission specialist that it would cost $2500 to rebuild the transmission and put in an external cooling device (which he said was necessary).
View 8 Repliesworking on a 2000 F-150 (5.4L & 4R70W). the truck was towed to me with the complaint it would not go forward.
I found 6 transmission trouble codes set. I cleared the codes and was able to drive the truck for about 30 miles. It shifted perfectly and had all 4 forward gears, codes did not come back. I parked the truck to check the fluid level (it was full) waited about 15 mins and went to move the truck, As soon as I turned the key and started the engine the CEL came on and the OD light started flashing, the transmission would engage in forward gears but would just chatter when you tried to accelerate.
I checked the codes and found P0743, P0750, P0755, P1747 and P1760 set. I tried clearing the codes again several times and come back instantly when the key is turned on.
I doubt all the electrical solenoids in the transmission have failed at the same time. I suspect the internal connector and/or harness maybe faulty. what is the best course of diagnosis on this? where so I start?
This morning I started my car and it was idling a little rough. The the Check Engine light began flashing - I immediately turned off the car and consulted this forum and my father the mechanic. After talking with my Dad and telling him that the car had sat for a week, he thought the issue was probably NOT the catalytic converter and thought it was probably related to the car sitting and possibly getting moisture in the gas. I started the car again (the roughness at idle seemed to have gone away) but the check engine light/malfunction indicator light (MIL) did not flash, it did come back on after a few seconds, but as a solid light . And as we've all read, it's OK to drive with a solid MIL.
I took the car over to Autozone and had the codes checked - P0300 (multiple cylinder miss fire) and P0301 (cylinder 1 misfire). I asked them to clear the codes. I has just put in new NGK spark plugs last month, so I didn't think it would be the plugs. I looked at a new coil pack for one of the cylinders. I decided to see if clearing the codes alone would work and drove home. No issues so far, no MIL, no rough idle, no hesitation (fingers crossed).
When I called the stearleship - they recommended I have the car towed, but would not speculate as to what the flashing MIL could be (catalytic converter or bad coil pack(s))...
Kia rio 2006 130461 today I went and got gas right when I pulled out light began to flash and car shaking went to auto zone codes p0302 and p0326. I had knock senor changed 2 months ago . What could be the problem the guy said I just need a tune up . Is this true ? Is my car safe to drive car not shaking now and no changes in function of my car. There no way I can any one to look at it for couple begin tomorrow sunday.
View 19 RepliesYesterday I had a flashing O/D light come on for about a minute, a quick scan shows a P1747 code indicating a short in the EPC solenoid circuit. Poked around the harness this morning and found this:
I'm guessing transmission fluid shouldn't be there. Do I have to replace the whole internal transmission harness to solve this? How much of a job is that?
2001 Ranger 3.0 liter has developed a transmission casualty. I was driving along at 30 mph and the transmission went into "limp' mode with O/D light flashing and truck will only barely creep along with high engine rpm. When I got the truck home I was able to retrieve a p0720, output shaft speed sensor signal fault. I had hoped that replacing the sensor would solve this casualty.
Of course this was not the case. I have read all the posts I can find for this particular fault and realize that I must electrically trace the continuity of this circuit and also ensure that it's not grounded. I have been unable to find the needed wiring diagrams or pin out information.
Before I have to try and blindly start pawing through the connectors I'm looking for the pinout for the PCM and perhaps the bulk connector above the engine between the PCM and the transmission wiring harness. I am also keen to hear of any diagnostic tips that I may have overlooked.
