I am doing the u joints on my 1999 f250 and when I pulled the hub the bearing fell apart in the back. are the rear bearings in the hub replaceable? here is the pic of the bearing that came apart....

The dealers says I have to buy the entire hub assemble but I seem to think different. But if I can replace the bearings any special tools that might make it easier ..

View 14 RepliesI have heard that the front brakes are separate, and if the rear brakes have a leak and the line is empty, the fronts should still work. Is this likely to be true? If I drive the truck will I be able to stop with the fronts alone (assuming they will still work?)
I plan to drop the truck off late tonight when there is likely to be no traffic, but thought I would ask.
I have an '06 F-250 that's making a quiet grinding/humming noise from what sounds like the front end. It doesn't seem to be coming from any side in particular, just an omnipresent noise whenever the truck is moving. It's constant with speed, and most noticable between 30-60 KPH.
Truck has about 268,000 KM on it right now, and has been worked pretty hard for whatever that's worth as well.
My rear wheel bearing are a little loose. This afternoon while diagnosing a squeak in the back I found this. While pushing the truck side to side there is a clunk and when you lay your hand on the tire you can feel it, bearings are loose. Nothing during the operation of the truck to give this away, truck runs and drives as it should but I need to check it our before something does go wrong. What I'm looking for is a torque / preload that the rear wheel bearings need to be set at.

I got home today opened my door and got snaked in the face with the smell of brakes. I got out of the truck then I heard the drivers side rear brakes popping as they are cooling down. I reached down to touched the wheel and it's crazy hot. Opened the garage and went to retrieve the infared thermometer. The rotor/caliper was 350 degrees, hub was 150 degrees, axle tube was 90 degrees.
I took the wheel off and inspected stuff. The rotors do have some heat spots, the caliper visibly looks okay but not 100%. The pads look like even wear. I am guessing that the caliper either is hanging up or I have a wheel bearing going? The passenger side was like 80 degrees on everything. There is a slight shimmy while driving which to me feels to me like the beginning of warped rotors. I don't hear anything to me that screams wheel bearing noise wise.Brakes or bearings?
I have a 200 f250 v10 srw 4x4.. I've replaced the auto front lockers with warn premium manuals. I cannot get power to the front wheels. The lockers appear fine. I hear the actuator function when I activate 4x4. Whats the possibility of a bad transfer case or front diff and how do i check? I've searched but there seems to be a lot of non-answers.
View 7 RepliesIve got a 2002 f250 Sd 4x4 with 93000. Im getting severe vibration from the front drivers side at highway speed. I thought it might be a warped rotor but i cant feel it in the brake pedal, when I put the brakes on. How can you tell when the hub bearing assembly is going bad? The truck doesnt pull to that side either. I can hear it, and feel it more when i'm going around highway corners. When im driving through town, I can hear a "clunk,clunk,clunk" noise coming from that side also.
View 14 RepliesI don't know if this is even a problem or not. Do the front brakes get hot on the one ton dualy? I wouldn't have even noticed it except when I went to the car wash, when I sprayed water on the tires and rims to wash them, I noticed steam coming off the front brakes. Think I have a problem or not? I can put it into "drive" and it rolls freely. It doesn't feel like anything is sticking.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2000 F250SD 4x4 that has developed a nasty front end noise. I originally thought it was a suspension issue (seems like bumps in the road cause the noise but not always, turning does not cause it) but everything seems good. Steering is tight and there is no 3 and 9 oclock movement. Ball joints also seem good with no 12 and 6 movement. I have jumped up and down of the front bumper and cant recreate the noise either, removed the sway bar and the noise is still there. The only strange thing I notice was that with the truck in 2wheeldrive and the hubs unlocked I can turn the front drive shaft and the drive's side axle spins but the passenger side only turns intermittently. I'm sure this isn't right so I'm looking for diagnosing the cause. Since none of these parts should be moving while driving in 2wheeldrive could this also be the cause of the noise?
View 11 RepliesI just hit a pothole on my way home just now and now my front right caliper is sticking. It happen about 10min from my house. As soon as i hit the pothole I can feel my truck pulling to the right and felt like there was some resistance when i was driving. I got home and peeked my head in the wheel-well and i can smell the brakes burning and smoking a little. How would hitting a pothole cause a caliper to stick. Is there anyway to unstick it or am i gonna have to change that caliper out...
View 8 Replies1999 f250 super Duty V10... I am having some problems with switching out of four wheel drive. S, when I flip the switch back to 2 wheel drive everything, seems ok at first, but within a mile or two I will hear this grinding coming from the front that sounds like the gears aren't completely disengaging. The inky thing that prevents this grinding from happening is switching back into fire wheel drive and keeping it there. What might be causing it to not stay disengaged ?

View 5 RepliesHave my truck in signature making a very high pitched, annoying squeak from the front end. I believe it is coming from the right side because i just took the wheel off and it has a coating of brake dust on it (the 3 other wheels are clean). Only makes the noise when turning right at speed, and goes away when i straight it out or hit the brakes. I am not very good with brakes or the front end parts.. what could be causing this noise? Could the slide pins be frozen? i know that is a problem with these trucks... but not sure if these are the symptoms.

I have changed pads, changed rotors, rebuilt both front calipers, flushed all my brake fluid, and made sure my slide pins were good and free. I have noticed some weird wear on the new front rotors and was wondering if it was normal or not. On a different note, I am having to replace my parking brake pads. When I had the axle out I looked in and saw a bunch of gunk.
View 12 Replies2009 F350 4x4 DRW. Just replaced rod ends, drag link, sway bar bushings and end links, ball joints, and shocks. I have a clunk when the axle travels downward on bumps. The only thing I see is that the tie rod assembly will rotate easily by hand and I can make it clunk when I rotate it. It does not rotate in the ends, the ends rotate with it. Thinking this may be flopping around over a bump. Does tie rod rotate easily?
View 14 RepliesMy truck is a 2000 F-350 (with front leaf springs). It has developed a significant shake in the front end. I have read much information about "Death Wobble," but I am not sure that's what my problem is. The truck shakes back and forth and the steering wheel moves what feels like several inches as well. I have already replaced the tie-rod and drag link, thinking this would solve the problem. The truck seemed better at first, but the shimmying came back.
The reason I replaced those particular parts was that I noticed the heim joints at both ends of the drag link had a lot of play in them. So, now I am trying to re-diagnose the problem. With the wheels off the ground, I cannot detect any play in either wheel when I try to move the tire by grabbing it at the top. I did notice that there is 1/4'' to 3/8'' of play in the steering box arm that connects to the drag link.
I am not sure if this is normal or not. The truck has a little less than 150,000 miles on it, so I am sure several different parts could be worn. However, after examining it quite a bit, I cannot see any obvious problems.
I was having a problem with 4wd and regreased/ cleaned hubs and when I went to test operation both fronts would engage and worked good. After a while.of testing in and out of 4wd I heard a loud clunk and looked under, the front driveshaft blew apart at the weld.the u joints dont seem to be bad so im at a loss as why this snapped. It was not a clean break and the edges looked like it had to started to tear at some part in the past due to rust build upon the inside.of the shaft and torn edge. Im lookin at 2 feet of snow expected here Tuesday, so im trying to find some answers as well as a.new shaft.
View 14 RepliesI have a lot of play in my front suspension and steering components. At first I thought it was my old tires, so I had them replaced and that worked, but there is still quite a lot of play. I would describe it at loose steering.
I went to get an alignment and they said they couldn't do it because of too much play in the tie rod end.
So that is going to get replaced. What else is down there, bushing wise, that I should replace to eliminate play and rejuvenate my steering?
