I have a 96 f350 that I just replaced the batteries on and now when I go to start it does not hardly turn over. Starter just barely turns motor over and definitely not fast enough to start truck. Battery connections are tight and starter was replaced about 4 months ago.
View 4 RepliesOn my 2002 7.3 liter for the last about 1 week it has been getting harder and harder to start. Up until yesterday when it will not start at all. What it does is this. A week ago I noticed it cranked slightly weaker but still ran perfect once started. This has progressed slowly but definitely. It has never gotten better, only worse. Even with jumper cables hooked up it does not improve at all. The starter is a Carquest POS but only has 50 thousand miles on it.
I have driven hundreds of miles with this problem in the last week and the truck has never skipped a beat aside from the starting issue. I took the batteries in to no less than 3 places and they all said the batteries are good. However when I put my multimeter on them when it is being cranked the volts drop from 12.6is down to about 8 volts. When I did get it started the other day and put a meter on it the batteries were charging up to around 13.7 or so.
When there is no load on batteries they show good but have been unable to get a solid answer if any of these places are load testing them: I am convinced they are not. I checked the resistance of the cables and they all have none. The grounds are all good. So I pulled the starter and took it in as a last result. They say the starter is good also! The connections were all tight and I cleaned them all very well.
Truck was running fine up until now. After the WTS light goes out, I crank it and.... nothing. It doesn't even try. It's not a battery problem. I have 12.6 V from each battery before and after cranking. The lights are bright, the horn works, the dash lights are strong and bright all both before and after cranking. It just doesn't want to engage the starter. I tried my backup key as well, thinking it might be a problem with the PATS. No dice. Where to start looking?
View 6 RepliesMy dad has a 04 f250 5.4 auto. The motor turns over but very slow and will not start. He's put two new starters on. I went and looked at it and figured it was loose cables or corrosion, but it was fairly clean, and tight. We decided to pull the battery out of his van that he drives everyday, and I cleaned everything very good. Same thing. Pulled the belt to make sure nothing was lockup, same thing. Truck was running and starting great, then just did this one morning on him.

Ok first problem : Starter Motor fuse kept blowing and I spent weeks trying to figure it out. No luck. so wired up a push button just to get the truck started, its a work truck so it was needed asap.
2nd problem : he truck stopped starting completely. Wont start in Park or neutral and after a NEW STARTER (because I thought the solenoid on the starter was bad I replaced it) Everything work correctly for one start with the key. After the second time trying to start it blew the starter fuse again. So I tried the straight wiring to starter. still nothing. I was wondering if there are any shims or anything at the transmission housing to correctly position the starter. I am thinking that maybe the gear is stuck or gets stuck sometimes. when I straight wire the starter it does nothing but the wire gets hot so I know its pulling.
I have a 2010 F250 V10 4x4. about every 3-4 times when you start the truck....it seems as though the starter "sticks". If I catch it and shut it off and then turn the key right back it fires up and does not stick. Its as if the gear is staying kicked out into the flywheel. Are we thinking the starter itself? I'm thinking starter...but looking for input before I crawl under it.
View 1 RepliesI recently bought a 2003 f350 7.3, I ordered a tuner for it and tried installing it, at one point while the ECM was still connected I did something and it sparked. Then the powertrain relay (302) started clicking really fast. It clicked in the on position. I switched it with another and it was also clicking. So since I sparke the ECM I figured I messed it up. I ordered another one and it's doing the same thing. Then I pulled fuse 45 (which was good) and put it back in. When I turned truck to on position it wouldn't click anymore, but it still won't start... What it could be? OV ruled out the ECM, powertrain relay (302) and fuse 45, I don't know what else to check.
View 2 RepliesWe have an 1999 f-450 super duty with a cube van box that we use for pickup. About a month ago the radio and lights started to stay on, various other electronics did the same.
we found mostly it points to the gem module...was unable to obtain a new one so we found a use one. For the time being we started disconnecting the battery ( would kill both overnight ) and magically....everything was working again so we didn't bother installed the used GEM.
Now....its given Chirstine a run for her money and auditioning for a maximum overdrive reboot The starter started to turn. Took the keys outa the ignition but a few moments later it started again. Got to the point the starter wouldn't stop and we were running around the shop looking for tools to disconnect the batteries.
Its not starting the engine so the ignition should be ok, its just powering the starter motor. checked the relay and it seems to be working fine. We tried to install the GEM we bought however, it seems its not the right part and its too late to return it now so, we are trying to find a new one ( not used ) from somewhere. so the gem is bad as the radio, blower motor etc comes on and off at will but here's the kicker.... with the GEM removed...the starter is still powering itself....
Thought maybe the fuse box got moisture or something, put a heater on it to dry it out. Pulled the starter fuse, turned off...pulled radio fuse samething
so i think the fuse box is ok.
Last night I was watching tv when my truck tried to start I thought I hit the remote start on my keys but it didn't start which I found weird. I went down stairs too see if it did anything else and it did it again it would turn over and turn over but never fire all while the keys are in my hand. At the same time the done light was stuck on and the radio went on and off. I'm pretty sure that my GEM got wet through the windshield, also Is the GEM dead or can it dry out and be ok
View 12 RepliesI have a 2004 to 250 super duty 5.4 and automatic trans it has about 233,000 miles on it. Yesterday when I started my truck I could see my reverse lights were stuck on against the garage door in the dark. After I put the truck in drive the lights went out later on I shift at the truck and to park and the starter engaged I put the truck in neutral and it stopped the starter from running after doing that several times the truck now does it even when it's in reverse or neutral. I have to leave it in drive and push the emergency brake on I am in and out of the truck all day long. I did change the shift to blast may I check the screws on the back of the shift to bury thing seems fine.

Thought my battery was no good , so changed it. Didn't work it just kinda bumps the motor but doesn't turn over.
Thought it must be my starter then , bought a $200 starter and changed it , still doing the same thing. It did start after changing the starter but wont now.

I just bought an 03 f250 5.4l . I'm just using it to plow my driveway this winter. The starter just clicks , after multiple attempts it will start. The previous owner said it's been like that for a long time but always starts.
I'd like to fix this now while it's warm out , before I buy a starter I'm wondering if I should look into other causes and how to trouble shoot the issue.
Motor cut out while driving. it restarted once then died. Wrench light came on.. checked DTC, it was P2291... motor ran again for a few seconds and has refused to start since. The Lift pump/ filter housing underneath the truck has a leak that was only noticed after it initially stopped running.
Fuel Filters were changed and weren't all that dirty when taken out a nice easy brown color, not to dark. Itried keying the lift pump to prime the engine but nada... cracked open the fuel filter in the engine bay and the bowl was DRY
Left the bowl open and primed the engine... i could hear gurgling but after 4 key on and offs no fuel ever made it to the bowl... i figured it would have made it by then... Put 5 gallons in the tank because it was showing low.
I can hear and feel the pump humming when i flip the key on.
I have a '99 F-250 super duty with a 5.4 L engine and I am having trouble starting it. Initially it wouldn't turn over at all, so I had the battery checked, it was fine, and after charging it the engine would turn over very, very slowly once or twice then stop. I then replaced the starter and now it turns over very erratically but wont start.
View 4 RepliesI have a 01 Ford excursion 7.3 auto and it will not start unless you jump the starter relay, I have replaced the starter, starter relay and swapped out batteries from my 2000 F250 auto, not sure what to do and this is my daily driver. Not sure if this matters but just had the transmission rebuilt. I have tried searching other threads but still not finding what I need. Once it starts it runs and drives. When you turn the key you hear a click like a relay is engaging and all of the lights and gauges work it just won't start with the key.
View 2 RepliesI own a 2004 F-250 Super Duty V10 truck. It's always ran and started great. I don't use it often so I make it a point to start and drive it around town twice a week. The other morning I went to start it and nothing. Engine will not turn over. Tried cranking with head lights on and they stay bright. It's an automatic and I tried going between park and neutral and still nothing. I can hear the little square relays in the fuse box clicking. Could the starter just have died? How are they to replace on these?

After coming out of the story today I tried the remote start and it tried to turn for a couple seconds and stopped. I replaced the battery and starter and still nothing. i hear the relay when trying to start with both keys or remote start but nothing from the starter all lights are working .

I can have it on hot and be driving along, then it will start blowing cold air. I can move the temperature switch to cold then back to hot, and it'll start blowing hot air again.
Need to know if that would be temp or the motor? I don't want to just change parts randomly.

My battery light on the dash came on so I tested the battery and it's OK. The last time the truck was started it was 10 degrees and ran for about 3 minutes and shut off because I knew the alternator had to come out. Next I pulled the alternator and had it tested and found to be bad. It was rebuilt and put back in along with a new belt. The motor cranks over well but will not fire. I checked the fuel pump shut off switch and it had not popped up so it seemed fine. The fuses look ok. I ran the battery down a bit so I put the charger on it to bring it up to full charge. When I pulled the alternator I touched it's battery wire to metal for a split second. Sounds like I need to do a pressure test on the fuel system or listen to see if the pump is starting. The truck has 130,000 miles on it.
View 14 RepliesFinally finshed the installing the new motor. Motor cranks but wont start. I have spark on all cylinders. Pressure in fuel rail but not sure how much. I don't hear any "clicking" coming from the fuel injectors. i measured the resistance on the injectors and its good. I just went out and got a new battery for it. I am not sure where to go from here.
