Having a problem with the ABS activating when it shouldn't. I happens whenever I slow down to a near stop. Sometimes the ABS and ASR light comes on and it's not a problem, but I ain't got no abs.

Sometimes when i slow down to make a turn or stop at a stop sign my car just dies...that's it...it just turns off...but i turn the key and it starts right back up...the weird part is that i've had the car for a year and it only does it about once a month??? I took it to the dealer and...big surprise...they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it...it doesn't turn off while I'm driving on the highway or anything...only does it when i slow down to make a sharp turn or when i stop at a stop sign and go again... I might just trade it in for an Audi A4. I have a 2001 Jetta 1.8t...
View 24 RepliesMy jetta failed to start for me at a local grocery store. It would crank super slow once or twice then stop. Tried push starting it to no avail. Got it towed home, and thought to try a new battery, figuring that the alternator might be bad. Got a new battery yesterday (still under warranty), threw it in the car, and gave it a shot. It turned over slow 4-5 times then stopped.
I have been having the ever-annoying shifter rod rattle for a while, and it recently got much more obnoxious. I am beginning to think that maybe the more obnoxiousness was my timing chain though. It sounded like marbles, but the noise sounded like it was coming from the intake, not the side of the motor. Also, not sure if this matters but the battery terminals got super hot after I tried to start it last. What to check? Electrical short? Timing off? Something from the shifter rod fell into the motor? Some other strange issue?
2000 VW Jetta
Yesterday everything was working great with my FOB key, I swapped plastic housing to one that is in better condition and then things went down hill. Both FOB's tested great for wireless transmitter. Old FOB no longer locks, unlocks or pops trunk. Car drives and turns over with master and valet keys properly (ruling out immobilizer I believe?)
I am trying to reset and program the FOB but my anti-theft system is not turning on with key- and that is critical to have on with what I have read here. Once I can get the red-light flashing and indicating anti-theft is on, I should be good to proceed.
Last night I turned key in car to on position and the alarm was going off, used the master key to pop the trunk open and that caused the alarm to cease.
Since then I can not get the anti-theft/alarm to activate at all. Currently if I have all my doors and windows closed along with the trunk, turning the key in door to the lock position it locks but does not activate the anti-theft -- no blinking red LED. Turning the key twice does not lock all doors either.
I picked up an '08 R32 about two months ago and was having issues with the DSG and the dealership determined it was an issue with the mechatronic unit so they swapped it. That made a huge difference, but the downshifting is still very hard when coming to a slow stop (to the point where the car jumps), especially from 2nd to 1st gear. About half the time when I back out of a parking spot, then put the car in drive and start to give it gas, the car doesn't move for a few seconds as the RPM's build, then it slams into gear.
This all happens in drive (D). I haven't even used the other modes to know if it's happening there too. The dealership says they don't see any issues with it and there are no error codes and that there is nothing wrong with the car, but this is by far the worst transmission I've ever had in any car I've ever owned. I find it hard to believe that VW and Audi would put this in their higher end cars, so I can only assume there is something wrong with mine.
I drive a 2016 Golf TSI S and I am having this weird brake problem. Every time I try to modulate my braking, it would suddenly bite and brake hard then let go. It feels like the front and back brakes are not in sync or something. This happens when I am going slow or less than 20mph. Its really hard to slow down to a smooth stop especially in traffic when this happens.
View 1 RepliesMy wife's car is a 2006 2.0T Passat. It has been very slow to blow cool air on starting. Once you are moving at highway speeds it cools fine, but then blows hot air when you slow or come to a stop.
I have taken the car to a mechanic who purged and refilled the coolant. This did not fix the problem. Upon checking with the mechanic, we noticed that both the primary and aux. cooling fans start and stop at the same time, and only would come on when I would rev the engine up some (around 2000 rpm).
I have talked with this mechanic and one more. Both are certified master mechanics, but neither specializes in VW. They believe it may be the high pressure side switch or the compressor itself.
My anti-lock brakes keep activating when i am slowing down from a speed above 10 mph once i reach a mphh. I have just installed koni sports on the front and bg springs all around with 20mm wheels spacers in the rear. The sound is coming from the driver side wheel and i can feel the brake pedal reacting in the way it does when the anti-lock brakes are activating. I haven't had a chance to take the wheel back of and check the sensors and wires.
It makes a grinding and popping kind of noise, which again remind me of anti-lock brakes.
Ok so lately I noticed a horrific rattling coming from the rear of my car. It happens mostly when I'm in a high gear going slow with a load on the gear. It's sort of like the rattle that comes from the exhaust with the same gear load but it's much looser and rattley sounding, and it doesn't always do it. It almost sounds like a piece of sheet metal in my spare tire well rattling when there's a gear load and the exhaust rattles. But I checked in there and it seems tight.
View 5 RepliesMy transmission has been shifting funny lately in only a couple of the gears. it shifts into drive hard if not warmed up first, and shifts very slow from 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th. I do live in cold weather at the moment and all of these shifting problems go away of are less noticeable once my car has had time to warm up.
View 3 RepliesI have a 04" GLI and I was thinking about doing a coolant flush. Looks like I have a slow leak. I was wondering where should I look in order to stop the leak. Put some coolant in about a month ago and now the coolant light is back on. Every morning when I pull out of my driveway there is a small leak under the driver side of my car. Is this an easy fix? If I do decide to do the coolant flush myself what is the recommended coolant replacement?
View 4 RepliesI have an 02 Jetta 1.8t automatic with about 140k miles. It has always been a great car. Last week, I was taking off from being stopped at a light and I heard a loud beep and saw that my oil pressure warning light was blinking! It blinked 3 times and then was gone, now last week temperatures were very low for my area. Today was actually pretty warm and sunny. I was stuck in gridlock traffic, it took me 25 minutes to go 1/4 mile. Idle, Idle, creep forward... Idle, Idle, creep forward...etc.
I noticed that the temp gauge read over 200, not in the red, but too close for my liking. Then a moment later when it was time for me to move up a bit, there was a beep and then that low oil pressure light again, 3 blinks and gone. I was panicked. I shut my engine off while I waited for traffic to move and when I would move forward it was the same thing. I finally pulled over, as I was stuck in traffic about 1000 feet from a friends house. I stayed there for 4 hours and then decided to fire her up again. Totally normal.
40 Minutes later as I rolled into my driveway, boom there was that light blink again... I am really concerned but confused by the light not staying on continuously and not having the check engine or any other warning light ever come on. It's weird to me that when this happens I am either taking off or coming to a stop, never going more than 5mph.
My TDI has slow acceleration, just curious if that was common. How do u check turbo. I can still hear it. its now very loud though. Its especially slow when going up a steep hill. anyway to make that faster???

Background: Purchased this car couple months ago. Did a bunch of maintenance, including rear pads/rotors, fronts still good. Also decide to bleed the system while I had the car on jacks. Followed Bentley procedure as I have previously, using a pressure bleeder making sure to stay at 12 psi and kept the reservoir topped up at all times. First I did the clutch slave, brakes and last I did VAG com procedure to bleed the ABS unit. Upon completion pedal felt good and I took it for drive ..
Brakes worked fine under normal braking force but when the car was slowing down and coasting to a stop with my foot on the brake (light pressure) the ABS engaged briefly(speed around 10-15km /h) right before the car came to a stop. Assumed maybe air in the system so re-bleed the ABS pump again .. Nothing same ABS kicks in right before stopping .. Cleaned all speed sensors and rings .. Nothing, still happening.
Recap:
-ABS does not engage under regular braking force, brakes work fine.
-ABS engages under light braking pressure right before complete stop. (ie parking car or pulling into a drive way)
So my question is, is it possible an ABS sensor out of the 4 is causing this? How about the brake switch? I know that on older VWs used to be 2 pin but this one is 4. Is it possible there is ABS pump problem? Air still in the system? Master cylinder?
I have a 03 mkIV 2.0 with just over 106k miles. I have been noticing a sqeak/creaking noise coming from the front end usually at slow speeds and going over small bumps or even bad backroads. I can simply push down on the front of the car and hear it and it sounds just terrible. I took it to my local tire shop and they said it could be my sway bay links and bushings, but they look brand new and show no signs of deterioration. My struts and shocks are fine. Could it be ball joints or control arms?
View 6 RepliesOn my 1.8t jetta she is leaking coolant slowly. Just started when it got cold out. It is dripping down the oil pan right down the center. It is falling off the oil drain plug. Was reading that it could be the water pump leaking but then it wouldn't be in the center of the pan. Got it jacked up now so here are some pics.

I noticed that when turning at slow speeds (like taking turns in a parking lot) I hear a klunk coming from the area of the left front wheel, and I think I feel it through the steering wheel. Yesterday I was going around a hairpin turn at a shopping mall and heard two clunks. Driving straight it doesn't happen.
View 8 RepliesEvery time I speed up or slow down my ABS, TC and parking brake lights turn on and my car beeps at me. I'm assuming that I have a wheel speed sensor going out. But when I check the codes there is nothing and the check engine light never turns on, so how do you tell which one to replace? Or is my problem something different? I drive a 1999.5 vr6 Jetta.
View 10 RepliesI been at this for weeks and just cant figure this one out. My daughter came home from college and her 1999 MK4 Jetta with 2.0 died in the driveway. It would start then stop just as fast. I scanned it and got a list of ground faults and a fuel pump relay fault. I took the next step and jumped the relay out. The car started right up and drove with out any problems. So I ordered a new relay and awaited to finish this easy repair. Since then I have tried the following.
- A dozen relays from various sources.
- New relay panel.
- New ignition switch.
- New Fuel pump.
Why my Golf beeps 3 times whenever I take off from a complete stop?? No dash lights, other than ABS... The tach isn't currently working either.
View 4 RepliesI was riding along today everything running fine then I came to a stop sign and when I pulled off my car wouldn't run 10 psi of boost it was only running 5 psi so I when to a buddys checked everything over and all my piping looked fine so I went up the road and everything was fine so when I started going home it did the same thing pulled of shut the car off pulled off and it was fine again.
