This only happens once or twice a week. After driving the car for 20+ minutes and sitting in the driveway, it will start running hot. I'd say around 230 degrees and it will stay there until I start driving the car again. I made sure the fans work and I also checked the coolant level and both are fine. What could be causing this issue?
View 2 RepliesMy Gti has been sitting in my driveway unused for a couple months now. The condensation in it has been unusually heavy when parked. The carpet is dry, doesn't smell damp inside, no coolant smell. Windshield was replaced 2year ago never had a prob with it so idk if it's that that's leaking, but what would the signs of that be? But what I really think it could be is that my recirculating flap is stuck closed. Could that be it?
View 9 RepliesI have a Jetta Mk IV, yesterday I went to go drive it and just as I pulled out of the driveway it started running rough, so I pulled back in the driveway and the coolant temperature sensor light came on, then the check engine light. and then it died. Then today I tried starting it, and it will only start and run if I have the gas pedal all the way to the floor, and it runs really rough. Then it will die. I thought maybe the coolant temp sensor since the light came on. I replaced that, and it still does it. I'm leaning towards a head gasket.
View 2 RepliesAfter running at normal temperature for about 10 minutes, my car starts to overheat. I noticed my radiator fan wasn't running at any speed, but my auxiliary fan was running fine. I checked the thermal switch and that was okay, because the auxiliary A/C fan still worked after jumping, and the big fan didn't. I replaced the fan assembly and now both fans work fine, so I assume that my thermostat is okay (maybe not and I'm missing something?). Even though both fans are running, my car still overheats, but maybe after 15 minutes now as opposed to 10. Water pump seems to be fine because I can see it pumping back into the coolant reservoir, and it doesn't seem to be sputtering or anything. Just replaced coolant recently after flushing with water, so I assume that the radiator isn't clogged. I also recently replaced the oil because it needed it anyway. It is still overheating so now I'm stuck. I can get to work and back because it's only a 5 minute trip and it doesn't have time to overheat, but I don't want to keep driving it obviously.
View 9 RepliesI have an oil pressure warning light on my 03' GTI 1.8t. It started as a sporadic issue, it would beep and flash for about 1-2 minutes than go away for about 20 minutes and return and repeat. I drove 130 miles on it due to an important meeting for work.
-I than changed the oil pressure sensor ( i found the old sensor housing full of oil ) and than the light stayed on after the car warmed up.
-I changed the oil pump with an OEM unit. Also changed the oil pick up- Issue still exists.
The light only comes on after 2-5 minutes of the car running. So I'm wondering if the oil is heating up and becoming less viscous than not allowing the pump to pump it as well or the sensor not picking it up.
I have oil and am not leaking it. I'm confused on what it could now be. I'm having it towed to my buddy's shop for him to take a gander when he gets a chance.I'm wondering if the cluster itself is bad.
I'm really bad with cars but I'll try to be as specific as possible.
Car: 2002 VW Jetta
Basically the car will just stall out of nowhere while driving (not stopped at a light), I would say usually about 10-20 minutes after I started driving. After this, when I try to start it, it makes that noise like it is trying to start but the actual ignition doesn't happen. it usually takes me about 15 minutes to start it up again.
In addition to this, when driving, the RPM seems to randomly drop off often, and the car also jerks frequently, especially when I press on the pedal quickly.
I purchased a 1999.5 Jetta VR6. The guy who owned it said he lost the key, had a new one cut, but not programmed. It started and ran fine with the new key for about 2-4 minutes. He was driving it, it ran perfect, and just shut off. It cranked and never fired.
It's been sitting for maybe a month. I put a brand new battery in it, tried the key. It cranks, will not fire. The sound of it cranking sounds a little off, like low compression or something. Could this be from the key, or does it sound like something else? I'm not sure how an uncoded key would react. I'm towing it to the dealer to have the keys programmed, but I'm trying to think of what else it could be. I was going to check spark or fuel, but I'm not sure what the immobilizer does to make the car not run.
Lately I've been hearing a constant click from what seems to be my chains side of the motor. Tensioners and chains were said to be done around 123k. After I've been driving it for a few minutes I hear the click. I thought it was the trans/ throw out berrying but when i push the clutch in and have it in gear i can still hear the click. It is not rapid like a tensioner like a tick tick tick, its like tick......tick......tick, could this be my top end of my block not receiving enough oil? I have a cracked oil pan, doesn't leak that often but i feel as if that is the source of the problem. Also I feel as if i lose power once i hit about 4300-4400 RPMs could that be because of low oil pressure?

So here's my problem, whenever I am driving for more then 20-30 minutes my shifting between gears begins to become more and more rough, like whenever I shift from 2nd to 3rd, it directs me to first gear instead of 3rd and I have to kinda force it into 3rd. This only happens when I am driving for a long period of time, why this is happening? and sometimes when I put it in reverse I get a loud crunch noise but I get it into gear...
View 1 Repliesi have a 05 GTI 1.8T and recently started overheating while driving. for a few months it would overheat if i idled too long but now after driving for 5 minutes it overheats and also wont build any boost. i could hear a hissing sound after i shut the car and thats coming from the flange where the coolant temp sensor is, but is hissing where is mounts to the engine.
update- i replaced the o-ring on the flange, that got rid of the hissing. the no boost must have been due to the engine overheating, but it is still overheating i guess im gonna check the thermostat next.
update 2 - checked thermostat and it is good so I'm at a loss here.
I have a mk4 Jetta 1.8t. Problem started last night. After I drive for about 15-20 minutes the oil pressure warning light comes on. It doesn't feel any different and my oil is full. Could my pump be going bad? I hear a slight tick near the bottom of the engine on the passenger side. But the car idles fine and drives fine too.
View 17 RepliesI want to start by saying I'm new and don't really fully know how to search vortex, I'm sure there's probably a bunch of things about this. I have an 04.5 gli, my temp gauge reads 190 all of the time but according to vag com I'm running at about 220 some times higher. I've heard my fan kick in once in the year I've owned it. Also I get a decent amount of power loss after driving for about 20 to 30 minutes. Idk if that's related, but just hard wire the fan with a switch? I don't have a lot of money so I'm not really trying to play a guessing game replacing stuff.

View 3 RepliesI have an 06 f250 w/ 6.0. Having a no start problem. If my truck is warmed up and sits for 5 min or so and try to start it, it starts fine. If it sits longer than that , no start. But if I wait about an hour and a half, it starts right up. Why would it not start if sitting for between 10- 90 min. Starts fine cold.
View 14 RepliesI have an 01' 1.8 t. We had a Pioneer touch screen Bluetooth deck installed and it was fine for months. All of a sudden it started having battery problems. If it sat for 6+ hours it was dead. We got a new battery from pep boys and once again it was fine for months. They tested my charging system and all components and everything was good. Then it started dying again. We'd charge it and after about 10-20 min it would start. Now the sit time is sporadic, sometimes it will sit all day and start right up and sometimes it sits for 10 min and won't start. Now its not taking a charge. We've once again checked the terminals, charging system, alt. Etc. And its all good. I don't know if it has anything to do with the stereo. We've checked all the wiring and its how it should be, I'm at a loss with this car. It occasionally throws a check engine light but we've hooked up the OBD and there's no codes. When I run the ac the car acts super sketchy, and starts throwing lights. (Brakes, air bag, wipers, engine, asr, doors). Fuses checked out all good, we haven't been able to find a single diagnostic explaining wtf is going on. I love my car too much to give up on her.
View 6 RepliesI am having a problem with my car stalling randomly. It happens when I am driving and it also happened when the car was idling in the driveway. I believe it to be an electrical problem as there are no lights on the dashboard when I try to turn it over, however after a few minutes it will start and run ok. At first I thought it was the fuel pump, but now I'm not so sure. There is no pattern to when it happens either. When driving the car will start sputtering then stall. I'll let it sit for a minute or so, then it starts again. What can be causing this?
View 5 RepliesI recently purchased my 2011 Camry XLE and have had the car alarm go off while the car was sitting in my driveway. This happened a few times and I thought I would push the plunger door switch in and out a couple of times to see if this would work. It did for a while like 2 weeks and then yesterday the car alarm went off again while it was sitting in my driveway again.
I grabbed my key and hit the door open button which turned off the alarm and locked the doors with the remote key fob. About an hour later the alarm went off again. I stopped the alarm again by hitting the open door button and then went out and pushed the door plunger button in and out again. So far the alarm hasn't gone off again.
When this first happened I took it back to the dealer and they said they tested the alarm system and found nothing wrong with it. Is it safe to assume that it is a bad door button? Is there any record in the car's computer that would tell when the alarm went off and why? Can the door plunger button be adjusted to correct this?
I have a 1998 Volkswagen GL. The car runs for 15-18 minutes at a time very smoothly and then it is like someone takes the key out of the ignition. It just dies for about 10-20 minutes then it will start back up again. I have used the diagnostic on my car and gotten rid of all codes, but one. The one code that I cannot get rid of is 1426. I also cannot find out what that code means other then just a general error message. What could be causing the car to be shutting down like that?

View 3 RepliesWe have an 02 prius 120k that works fine and dandy for the most part (slightly lower mileage then when new - we get 36-40mpg but I think part of that is the lead foot & AC usage) except now we have got the turtle a few times after it sits unused for a few days.
After driving it around for awhile the turtle goes away and doesn't come back. But this has happened a few times, the most recent after it sat in the driveway for 3 days with no activity. When we use it daily this doesn't occur.
Does this sound like the big battery is giving up the ghost after 11 years? Or is there something I can do to make it a happier camper (other then the obvious of paying attention to it daily)?
I have a 2005 Volvo XC90 with 120K+ miles. About 2-3 months ago, the car alrm started going off randomly, while sitting in my driveway. Generally it would go off around 9-11 pm, but also at any other time. It has gone off 5 times in a row within 5 mins. It has gone off at 3 AM, 4:10 am, 5:15 am, and other totally random times.
It happens anywhere from 2-5 or 6 times from when I get home til I leave in the morning. But here's the thing......it ONLY GOES OFF IN MY DRIVEWAY. Only. I have taken the fuse out, had the remote starter and alarm disconnected, tried leaving it unlocked, tried parking in a neighbors driveway. It still goes off.
The time are so random that no one can figure it out. The weather makes no difference. I literally keep my keys in my hand at all times when I'm home so that when the alarm goes off, I can turn it off as quickly as possible. I keep them on the floor outside when showering and in my hand when I go to bed.
The Volvo dealer says he's seen it 100's of time and he can fix it, but when I told him it only happens in my driveway, he said he had no idea what the problem could be. It's going to a car shop next week to see if they can disable the factory installed alarm but I hear that's nearly impossible.
