I'm looking at a 1999.5 MKIV Jetta to buy and one thing I noticed is that the CEL doesn't light up when you turn the key to the "on" position. All other lights light up except this. I'm familiar with MKIII's and it does light up.

Yesterday driving on the highway, i hear a sudden "clank" and out of the corner of my eye i see my key turn itself to the off position. which i think is really strange... my rpms went to 0 and everything died.
I pulled over, put it in park. I tried to start it but the key wouldn't turn cause it locked. So I took it out and tried again. It started just fine.
So noticed my cruise control does not work when I turn switch to on position the green light in cluster does not come on what are some problems that I could look into and also any example of using turn signal Bulbs in the head lights as drl lights instead of it running off of the actually headlight bulb?

View 4 RepliesSo my turn signal stalk doesn't go back to neutral after a turn.. also, I don't hear the usually " clicking when turning the wheel that you hear when it goes far enough to re-set itself. What controls this action? Its not the clock spring thing commonly referenced to the airbag airbag is it?
View 2 RepliesA recently purchased 2001 volkswagen jetta. The car was working fine when purchased. It was sitting parked for about a month without being driven. Went to start the car and the battery was right dead. Started looking online and seen a dead battery can set the immobillizer system off. So figured if the battery was replaced with one that was charged everything would be good, it would just need the immobillizer reset. So the battery was replaced one that was charged and working. I was expecting the dash to have the little car with key in it light that tells you the system is active, and instead of the car not turning over at all that it would turn over start for split second then stall like its suppose to when in that mode. Instead, there is no light in the dash and it still doesn't turn over at all.
After about 15-30 minutes, I decided to check the battery with a battery tester again to make sure was all good. Now, when the load of the tester was put on the battery it dropped down to 10-11v. Keep in mind with the tester, before being put in the car, it tested fine with a load put on it. So I looked online again and found that is common with this car as well.
So now Im not exactly sure what to so. From what Iv read, I think I should pull every fuse, one at a time and test with ammeter and see if one of them is draining the battery. And if everything tests good there, that it must be a bad ground somewhere?
How to fix or solve front turn signals that are not working? I just realized that both the front signals on my Prius doesn't light or flash when making a turn, the rear are working fine. Is this an easy fix or should I bring it to the dealer?
View 4 RepliesNot permanently, but temporarily? I can't really figured out any obvious reason why it is on, all the connections seem good, but I don't really know if I've covered all my bases. I obviously care that it functions properly in the event of a collision, however I was curious if there is a way to manually turn it off for a duration? I have an inspection coming up which doesn't allow for this light to be on.
View 19 RepliesReally weird thing is going on with my 03 1.8t Jetta, sometimes when I am driving the battery light will come on. It will turn off when I slow down but will turn back on as soon as I accelerate. After a while of this happening I will hear a burst of air and the car will jerk back a little bit then drive perfectly normal. I've looked all over google and posted in a local Euro car group`and haven't found anything.

Cruise control switch (E45): Implausable signal
P1569 - 35 - 10 ---- Intermittent
I tried clearing it but it would but the light remains on. I noticed that when i hit the RES button on the stalk, the light goes away and when that when I scanned the car and held the RES button the code would come back. My cruise control also stopped working.
I have a 03 1.8t jetta if i turn the steering wheel all the way to either side a epc light comes on and cuts power a lot what could this be....

I also realized that the left side turn indicator (blinker) light is not working and when I popped it out I saw the wires were chewed up, I am not sure what happened. Do you think I need to remove the wheel well liner to try to access that area? What to do?
View 14 RepliesAfter running to operating temp, if the car is turned off then restarted (like you would at a gas station, which is where I notice this) the engine will turn and turn and turn but not fire. I have noticed that stomping on the acceleration will cough it into life during this procedure. This doesn't happen every time and I have recently run high octane gas during a long distance trip.

I'm having a weird issue with my passenger side turn signal light. It's more of an annoyance than an actual problem. When I turn on my headlights both yellow turn signal lights also usually turn on but the passenger side one is not turning on anymore. The odd thing is that it still blinks as normal when I engage the turn signal. I replaced the bulb but it did not resolve the issue. I'm thinking it's an electrical short somewhere. It's not the wiring in the headlight housing because I tried an old housing I kept when I replaced my headlights last year and I still had the same issue. What I should check first?
View 1 RepliesMy car doesn't start right now and a shop diagnosed it as an ecu, but I'm starting to think that is not the case. The tach doesn't move when I try to start it and pushing the gas doesn't change it, so I'm thinking it is the crankshaft position sensor. Unfortunately, down at school, I don't have access to a jack, so I was wondering if there is any way to get to the cpa without a jack? I'd rather not have it towed to another shop.
Also, my coil pack has a huge crack in it. Could that be causing my problem? And my sai has some really frayed wires and I'd rather not replace it if I don't have to because these repairs are really adding up, but could that be causing problems too? it's not causing gas mileage issues and I live in an emissions-free county, so simply not allowing me to pass emissions isn't a problem.
Last year I had an issue with starting my 1.8t Jetta Gli. Every couple of weeks, the car wouldn't start unless I keep trying or come back after a couple of hours. I then thought it was the cranks sensor and had it replaced. Unfortunately, the problem is back! The idle seems a little jumpy, car isn't as smooth as I'd like it to be. It also doesn't seem to have a strong start. I can't figure out what it exactly is, and I don't want to start changing random parts. I was debating on perhaps getting a new fuel pump, coilpacks...

View 2 RepliesI've got a Mk4 Golf 2.0L with 136k on the clock. Hasn't really given me any problems in the past year of ownership till now. I recently picked her up from the shop for a rear axle beam replacement. When I picked her up she drove fine. I headed to class for the day and she sat in a parking lot for 6 hours or so. I hop in and try to fire her up and nothing. Had to have her towed back to my apartments. I've checked fuses, spark plugs were recently replaced but I am getting no spark. When I crank it I do hear the fuel pump and I can smell gas when I crank it. The rpms go up just a bit, 100-200 range. Going to check out the crankshaft sensor later on. maybe it could be the coil pack as well? I don't know a huge amount about these cars, only some info. And I sadly have no access to a scanner to check for codes.
View 2 RepliesMy AC doesn't work right now, however, sometimes it works. It's very random, it doesn't matter if its hot outside or if its cool.
What happens is my AC clutch doesn't engage. when I turn ac on, it raises the idle for a second, and as soon as it does that, my ac compressor gets around 12 volts for less than a second, and the idle drops again. it does that in a loop.
My fans work fine, both high and low speeds, everything else works, all the fuses are good. I changed the pressure switch, didn't fix the problem. I also checked the ac coil and clutch. everything clicks and works. ground on the compressor is good.
Other odd thing - positive wire on the compressor constantly getting around 3 volts. What can it be and what else do i need to check?
