Took it in for an oil change at 90k miles dealer reported a leaking rear right strut and quoted over 1000k for replacement which i obviously declined. Now wanna know what are my options can I change just the one rear side which is leaking and do I have to put the oem or can I put anything aftermarket.
View 14 RepliesSo, in changing a rotor today, I noticed the entire top bolt of my shock absorber (rear left) was sheared in half. I researched replacements and saw the staggering price tag. In 8 years with this car (2003 Gx470) I've never once changed the shock mode from sport to comfort or vice versa. Am I correct in assuming that I can by a decent aftermarket shock as a replacement and not hook up the electronics and only lose the ability to adjust the shock from the cabin? I will still retain the ability to raise or lower the car, correct? If so, what is a decent and affordable shock to purchase? Also, while I am in there, are there any recommended bushings or other things to replace to cut down on squeaking and other noises?
View 2 RepliesJust came back from a ride and since it's getting pretty warm here I decided to drive with open windows. At low speed I noticed a unusual squeak coming from the rear passenger wheel when I got over small potholes. This part of the car seems to shake really fast a few time before settling. I can also hear a drum like vibration in the car coming from that corner. I can feel an unusual bounce which take time to settle when it happen. I'm no expert but from what I read the usual suspect should be either a defective shock of broken control arm ? I'll get a nearby garage to take a look next week. Gotta admit, like some members pointed out, I'm surprised to see those kind of issues on a car which didn't even broke the 45000 miles mark yet... And that's for a car that I take really good care of and not used as a daily driver.

It looks like it's the shock absorber leaking. I just rolled over the 4,000 mile mark. I'm dreading taking it in to my nearby dealer. I have a leak coming down the drivers side rear shock absorber (the bit that bolts onto the swing arm) this has obviously resulted the the rear of the car riding low, but, is there something I can take apart and replace or do you have to replace the whole thing.
it seems likely that it could just be a seal broken somewhere.
What is the size of the bolts on the rear axle that hold the shock absorber? I believe its an M12 x70 mm long??

A side of the road discussion determined she was seeing sparks near the drivers side rear shock absorber. I looked closely at that area and could not see anything that looked burnt. I felt the shock, axle tube, brake, brake line and E brake cable, but nothing was hot.
Just had my car at the dealer for the airbag recall and was told one strut and one shock are leaking. the car only has 66,000 miles on it and i don't drive it that much as i also have an electric Fiat. This sounds a bit unreasonable to me. will definitely take it to an independent shop for 2nd opinion. 2008 Subaru Outback....
View 8 RepliesI have a 99' GTP with 199,000 miles. I drive the very bumpy roads of Chicago. Recently when I go over any small bump, large bump, or when I am going fast and break I get a knocking sound mostly out of the right rear wheel, a quieter knocking out of the left rear wheel. It just sounds like a dry knocking when you go over any little bump or inperfection in the road. I am assuming that it is the struts. I don't know if i can just replace the shock part for $50 something or if my problem needs to be solved by replacing the whole strut assembly which includes preassembled strut, coil spring, strut mount and strut bearing?

View 1 RepliesI have a 2009 RX350 with 51,000 miles (just 1000 over warranty). The left rear strut developed a bad leak and has begun making the noises associated with the failed strut. I will be changing out both rears and have two questions that I cannot find info for on the web.
1) I noticed the 2 latches on the side covers inside the back area to remove the panel and expose the rear strut tower, are these the only two latches I need to remove to access the upper bolts, or are there hidden screws or things I need to do to remove the panel?
2) What are the torque specs for the rear strut bolts?
Took my 2004 Honda CRV 2W Drive to my local dealer for the 90K maintenance. There they recommended for me to replace the front shocks strut assembly--not quite remembering the reason but they told me that it needs to get done. Before I get the work done, I am trying to find as much info on what next steps to take.
View 10 RepliesMy 2008 Santa Fe (3.3 2WD) produces a knocking sound from the front every time I go on a bump while the wheel is turned. I can pretty much reproduce it at will. Occasionally, I hear the same sort knock from the rear as well, but I cannot confirm that it is consistent.
I do suspect that something is wrong with the struts. The only issue is that the car has 67k KM (41k miles), and to me, that seems a little early for that sort of thing to happen. My driving is pretty standard on standard roads, although winters up here tend to produce potholes that I sometimes cannot avoid.
I've had my struts fail on my last car (2000 Mazda Protege), but that was 9+ years old and with almost 3 times as much mileage on it.
Any noted 2.0T, B6 experience/solutions for squeaking/creaking suspension noises seeming to originate from shock/strut tower areas? I purchased new in 2009, 37K mi ago. VW dealer service persons think they hear it sometimes. Been chasing this problem for a year or more, mostly notable in cold weather. Condition evident driving on uneven pavement, dips in the road etc. Passengers ask "what is that squeaking".
View 7 RepliesI found out the rear driver's side shock was leaking oil after I jacked up the car to take a look at exhaust options for the car. 3 of the 4 shock are clean and show no signs of oil.
Is this a defective shock or a pothole destroyed it?

View 4 RepliesI own a 05 XLT Screw 4x4. Dual rear shock set up? My truck drops in the rear when I load up my quads and attach my trailer. I could do an add a leaf but thought a dual shock setup might look and perform better. I am going to add traction bars also because I get a lot of hop when the bed is empty and I'm in the sand.
View 6 RepliesI have a broken rear strut on my 2009 LS 460 with 27000 miles. First noticed it about 25000 but dealer said it was only the cold weather and all was fine. I had a mechanic friend ride with me and he said I had a broken part in the rear suspension. Back to the dealer and this time they test drove it and diagnosed the broken rear strut. The tech told me that they had recently seen several LS 460's with the same problem. The broken strut causes handling problems and I am reluctant to drive at highway speeds.
The dealer (and all the other dealers I called) said that there are no parts available for the repair and one told me that the last strut had to be brought from Japan.
Last week I had my car visited the dealer due to left rear shock leaked which was replaced under warranty...
This weekend is the first time that I took the car out for a drive... When I got home, I noticed the left rear wheel area is covered with grease... I don't know where it came from... look like brownish goo... I splashed around the inner side of the wheel and also cover part of the rear brake caliper, brake line, and control arms.
What kind of grease is this?? Where is the grease came from???
My GS is all stock... No modification.... Currently has 62K on it.
