I get this noise, AT TIMES, on cold starts which sounds similar to a knock. It lasts for maybe a couple of seconds at most. It's not the FI ticking that is generally always present. I see where other models (engines) have reported start up noise but nothing on the 460.
View 2 Repliesyesterday I heard a faint rattle coming from under the hood while the a/c was on, when I had my son turn it off, it went away. Right now it's barely noticeable, but I don't want it to turn into something major. I own a '08 ES with 88,000 miles and all my service is done at the dealership.

View 14 RepliesSo my wifes 07 93k miles started to make a strange knock rattle noise. It sounds like the knock some on here have when the water pump was going out. It only happens when the car is on, in gear ( drive or reverse) brake pressed And AC ON. The engine begins to vibrate under the load and the rattle begins. Sounds like you its coming from behind the alternator under the valve cover. Once I place it park.... or turn the AC off it goes away. It idles fine. Quiet And Smooth. But once I place it year it comes back!!
View 1 RepliesI've noticed that potentially my heat shield or whatever guard that is 1 step toward the front of the car from where the inlet pipe connects to the exhaust system may be the reason for my rattle at 2k and 3k rpms. i think its a heat shield but I am not sure. the thing is it seems properly mounted, nothing is cracked/broken/or loose. But when I do try and wiggle it it does make a slight creaking noise that sounds similar to the rattle I get. So I could foresee this as being my issue.
But, is there anyway to fix this rattle w/out just taking off the part? i figure its there for a reason and it looks like its held on in 2 places. But they're not nuts they almost look like spot welds or something. 1 on each side. What to do?

I recently bought a 2011 460 L, CPO with 28,350 miles. I love the looks and how it drives, smooth! But I do have a concern. Before I go to the dealer I thought I would educate myself from the experienced LS owners. I am hearing a very brief (1-2 seconds) mild engine knock at a cold startup.
This only occurs when the engine is cold and has sat overnight. It never happens after this first startup, even after turning the engine off and then on again. It kinda sounds like the oil isn't getting where it should be for a few seconds. Engine sounds great with normal and hard acceleration throughout the day. The dealership where I bought it is 300 miles away, so I would be taking it to a local dealership.
Now I did hear this noise and mentioned it to the service manager when I first bought the car, and the service manager told me that this cold startup sound is normal. He also mentioned the direct injectors at idle. I guess sometimes it's hard to fully trust what dealerships say. Is he right?
I have a '99 Frontier (3.3L V6) just had the radiator, hoses, fan clutch and 3 exterior belts replaced. Car's not overheating anymore, BUT, now I hear intermittently a "clack" (which sounds similar to a loud compressor when it shuts on and off). Car never made this sound before the repairs mentioned above were made.
I took pictures and could use finding out what the part is called that is making the noise. I see the 3 discs on the front side of one of the belt pulleys (i think?) spinning, then they will stop, making the clack sound. It seems to me that sometimes the sound is loud and then other times it is extra loud --are there two sets of these discs and the other set is somewhere I can't see?
I woke up to a surprise this morning , the car earlier had this kinda issue where i would press the start button and it would not start and only make "Click" sound .. and after few attempts it would usually start and then this issue went away for few months for unknown reasons
Today it returned back i didn't move the car for 2 days over the weekend down here. I tried to start the car all it would do is Click sound but this time a very faint sound not like earlier where it was much louder .
I am assuming its the starter ? Where is it located ? What i read online and see could be just a bad starter selonoid .
the other day i was driving with no music on my GS and i noticed every time i came to a complete stop, the brakes would produce a weird loud knock sound. it was rainning so i thought it would be from that... but then after driving it roughly 5-7miles the sound stopped... then since i noticed it, i hoped on my corolla to see if it had the same thing but no... only on my GS.. is this normal?
View 5 RepliesEvery time I start my 1999 Ford Explorer It makes a loud beeping noise similar to seatbelt warning sound. Every 30 minutes or so it does it again as long as the vehicle stays running(even with all seatbelts fastened even if no one is sitting in the seat.
View 1 RepliesOur 2007 Grand Caravan with a 3.3 Liter Engine has intermittent vibration which feels similar to driving over rumble bars. It usually occurs between 30-50 mph but sometimes at 70-80 mph as well. Have had the suspension checked and had outer tie rod end replaced. Also had sway bar bushings replaced and front end aligned. We then brought it to transmission shop and had a transmission diagnostic performed. They found no faults with the transmission and thought the engine needed a tune-up which we did with no success. At a recent oil change, we asked for them to test drive it and check again for any suspension problems. They did not notice any vibration during the test drive and found no problems with the suspension.
View 4 RepliesMy 09 LS w/ 65k on it wont start. last night i drove the car around to several places, and on my last stop of the day i couldnt get the car to start. finally after several tries, it fired right up. but today, no such luck.
All the lights come on (and I have charged my batery with a tender to be sure its not the battery), the steering wheel moves in to position, and I either get a click, or a buzzing sound.
Sounds like starter, any other opinions?
First: 2007 GX470 with 63k miles
On some 'cold' starts (and I use that term very loosely, because it never really drops below 40 degrees here), when the engine has sat overnight, and when I shift into reverse (never Drive, just Reverse) and stand on the brake I get a knock. I don't hear it in Park. Not valve clatter like on my german cars while the oil gets routed to the lifters, but instead a loud, startling deep-down knock that sounds like BAMBAMBAMBAMBAM. Then it goes away. Put it in neutral and the revs rise and it's gone. Put it in Drive and nothing there. Just lasts for maybe 5-10 seconds, but is it loud. BAMBAMBAMBAM! Like someone hitting a 2x4 on the block or tranny housing.
Once I'm past that 5-10 seconds it won't do it again all day. Just after a "cold soak". And perhaps 5-10% of the time.
There is a lot of examples with this motor of what some call "piston slap". Don't know if I have it - and I suppose it might get worse (to the point where I hear it) when the engine is cold and under load (in gear), but I don't get it in Drive. Just Reverse.
I'm hearing a crunching/rattle sound from the front right end of my 2007 B6 Wagon, 3.6L, Auto, Sport Pkg, FWD w/ 45k miles. I'll try to characterize what I'm hearing and when I hear it...
In the morning, when I've driven less than 2-3 miles and I go over a speed bump (i creep over the bumps) I hear what sounds to be like an un-oiled/worn out spring like sound coming from the front right side of the car. I don't think I hear any other sort of noise at all while driving (or if I do, it's very faint and barely noticeable).
After I've driven 25 miles or so at highway speeds (at the end of my daily commute), when I'm around 25 mph (independent of accelerating / decelerating / applying brakes) I hear what sounds to be a metal on plastic-like loose wobbling rattle (great description, right??) coming from the front right end. It gets pretty loud. However, if I go over a speed bump after having driven a good distance...guess what...no "worn out spring sound", just the rattle @ 25mph.
The rattle sound definitely 'peaks' in loudness at 25mph. If I listen carefully, I can hear it at other speeds, but it is less noticeable. I don't feel like I hear it at all at 40+ mph. I'm pretty sure the rattle is rotationally dependent (e.g. the faster wheel turn, the higher frequency of the rattle).
My tires are worn pretty unevenly, so there is a very annoying wobble/hum at all speeds, but I don't think it has to do with the tires. So to recap, it sounds like a rusty spring when going over a speed bump when the car is 'cold'. After driving a long time, no rusty-spring sound going over speed bumps, but I hear a pretty significant rattle around 25mph.
I have a bit of a question about my 2007 Ford F-150 w/ the 5.4 3V. I don't know how long it's been doing this, I just happened to notice it not long ago. Whenever I rev the truck (doesn't matter if it's in Park or Drive) in between 800-1,000 RPMs it makes a "rattle" type sound - like a "rat-tat-tat-tat" I guess is one way of putting it. It only does it when the engine is hot, it won't do it when it cools down some. The truck has 63,000 miles and I've always ran the recommended 5W-20 weight oil. Engine runs good, no power-loss or anything like that. I have posted a video on YouTube of the sound. 2007 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4L Triton V8 Rattling/Ticking VCT Phaser Noise?
I have a 2007 XC90 3.2 RWD with around 112,800 miles.
On acceleration, there is a rattle (not a valve knocking) that gets quieter once a steady cruise is achieved. At idle in gear, a very quiet rattle can be heard. When transmission is slipped into neutral, the rattle goes away. The engine shifts normally, accelerates normally and gas mileage is steady at around 20.5 mpg (mixed city and highway). I am using 93 octane gas. This week the check engine light came on.
My 07'Passat 2.0T has this annoying loud rattle sound coming from somewhere behind dash board whenever the car was left outside ( under ~55F) overnight. The problem was gone after the car sit under the sun for hours. Is it cause by cheap material VW used in 07 model or assembly ?
View 5 RepliesI did some searching, and it seems the only way to eliminate the rattle from the rear tonneau cover is to remove it completely? I use mine all the time, so I don't want to remove it, but the flap seems to make noise over most bumps. Any way to eliminate the sounds that it makes over bumps?
View 14 RepliesOur 2003 Honda Pilot with 130K miles recently developed a front end Knock/rattle, which is sustained at about 70 miles per hour. Dealer "couldn't hear the noise". Tried new tires per dealer suggestion- fail! Recently we towed our 2100 lb pop up with it, and it was MUCH louder, and of course sustained at lower speed. Should we even be towing a pop up with a vehicle that has this many miles on it?

View 1 RepliesI took my car in for an oil change and they said I should get the fuel injector and upper intake manifold and valve cleaning treatment. When I picked up the car I noticed a rattle or low pitched ticking sound coming from under the hood. The car has an automatic transmission and the noise frequency increases and decreases with the rpm's. It only happens with the car in "drive". For the seasoned followers, it sounds like the sound we got from fastening baseball cards onto our bike frames to make noise as the wheels turned - just describing the sound. When I took it back to the Mini dealership in Phoenix (who shall remain anonymous), they said I needed a new transmission.
