I have had my car at the dealership once before for fixing some rattling noise in the cabin. That was a couple of months or so ago. The rattling is back again, this time from the front doors area and from the front speakers or dash area near the speakers.
View 5 RepliesI have grown extremely irritated over rattling inside the Touareg and decided to listen closely in an attempt to identify the guilty panels or whatever is causing all that noise that makes the cabin of my 2004 Touareg sound like the interior of a 1994 Ford Explorer with about 200,000 miles on it.
I identified the rear seat bench as a noise generator a while ago. I wrapped electrical tape around the latch bolts, but that didn't work too well. It seems that the rear middle arm rest rattles quite a bit in itself. The rest of the rattling seems to comes from the rear seat backs, but this is old news.
I noticed that the door panels (or at least that's what I thought) on the driver's door and right rear passenger door were rattling and creating a lot of noise. However, as much as I tried to hit (lightly) the door panel with the palm of my hand on different areas of the door panel, I couldn't get it to make the same noise.
After listening closer while I drove, it sounded like the doors themselves weren't quite closed. They sounded like they rattled on their latches. Something like taking off with a door ajar, but the noise isn't as pronounced. Then I remembered that every once in a while, during a visit to my friendly local car wash, water was entering my vehicle and accumulating on the rear seatbench. Upon closer inspection, I would notice that the water was getting in easily between the rubber door seal and and the door sill.
Two days ago, I decided to check something, and low and behold, I think I found the problem. Those two problem doors don't shut as tightly as the other two silent doors. I ran my fingers along the door crack near the door handles on all four doors and discovered that the two noisy doors "stuck out" some. Just a few millimeters (maybe 1 or 2 at most). I then tested it with a flat edge and it was even more apparent. I then stood behind the vehicle (far rear left and far rear right) and looked straight down the vehicle's edge and noticed that those two doors were sticking out.
I tried to loosen the door latches on the door sills to move the latches in a little, but I found that a T-40 torx is too small and a T-45 torx is too large. In fact, the T-40 worked on the top bolt on both front door sill latch hooks, but would strip the bottom bolt on the same door sill latch hooks. Those 8 point bolts are not torx (duh). I'll have to wait till Tuesday (Monday is a holiday here) to get this rattling fixed. I really hope that this eliminates most of the noises I am hearing. I notice that the front right door doesn't make any noise, and I also notice that that is the one door in the vehicle that needs to be shut extra hard in order for it the shut the first time. If it's not shut hard, it usually takes two or three tries to get it to shut. My 2003 GTI did this as well, with the very same door.
I have 06 gs300 AWD and recently it started to make that noise. At first I thought my shock/struts went bad and i had it inspect and they are good, ball joint and control arms also good. However, I do not know if strut mount is bad or not. When I go over small cracks i can hear rattles inside but when i let my windows down I hear less. I do not know if the window or door has to do something with it. It seems like coming from passenger side. Btw sometimes i do feel even dashboard rattles a bit.

View 2 RepliesWe own a 2013 RX 350, purchased less than a year ago. We are experiencing this rattling noise coming from inside the side panels, its frequency changes depending on road and weather conditions like if road is rough or if its windy. We have taken the vehicle to Lexus Service three times so far for the same issue, they have acknowledged the issue. Last service took almost a month but still no remedy.
As of last service, Lexus took the entire roof liner down to fix the issue but it came back after one day post service.
Noise is extremely irritating because it occurs next to driver's left ear and is annoying as anything can be. Same goes for right ear for the front passenger.
We have owned Nissan Maxima, BMW and Lexus before and none of the vehicles had this issue.
I have 06 passat 2.0L. When I turn on my cabin fan its making a noise like when a piece of paper is hitting a fan or something but a heavier sound. How do I get to the blower motor to see if something is stuck in there or something came loose?
View 2 RepliesI have bought a new 2008 Passat about 4 months ago. about 2 months ago, this weird pressure could be felt from the inside similar to having the sunroof opened or the rear windows opened. I took it to my dealer twice and they say that they don't feel/hear anything. I went on a 200 mile trip and regretted taking the passat only 20 miles into it. the pressure/noise thing is unbearable! I seriously am thinking of crashing this thing and making my insurance switch cars. it was never like this when i got it. I would never buy a car like that! I checked to see if the tires were the problem but found nothing. i am so frustrated at the dealer and with this car that it just sits there not being driven because i can not stand driving it. Again, it makes a weird pressure/noise feeling as if the windows are opened but they aren't!
View 13 RepliesI am a brand new VW owner and new member of this site. Just recently I purchased a '02 Passat GLX 4motion (w/97k miles) for fairly good price knowing that it was involved in a rear end accident.
Now I am finding multiple issues with this car. It looks excellent from exterior or interior. I have three different issues (front and rear axle pinion seal leak, broken spring, gas leak only when tank is full) with this car but I would like to discuss the Broken Spring issue here.
When I go through rough road or bumps I hear a metallic noise (noise like key chiming) from the rear driver side along with a rattling noise (like wood or plastic board rattling) at the same time from the rear middle part of the car. I researched online and found few forums talking about the brake pad caliper spring making similar noises. I called a mechanic and I was told that it could be the muffler.
I took the wheel off and kicked and hit the axle area with rubber mallet, kicked the muffler - but no similar noise was produced. However I noticed that the spring coil (rear driver side) was broken right at the bottom. When I did online research I saw one forum talking about broken spring making similar noise. I did more research and found the part (OEM# 4B0 511 115 B).
My question is:
> Does this sound like what causing the noise? Could a broken spring cause metallic chime and a hard board rattling noise?
> Is it necessary to replace the spring along with the shock absorber? Can spring be replaced by itself?
> How hard is it to replace a spring?
> Do you have to have spring compressor to mount and unmount? Can you simply take the whole assembly without compressing it?
I am getting a weird noise from the front suspension on my car. I recently about a year ago installed DG springs it did this a little before I replaced the springs but now its louder. it sounds like either a mount is loose or something is broken. I live on a dirt road so I hear it a lot on the small bumps. could it be the upper strut bearing? or the fact the coils are shorter? I have 112k on the clock and Id like to take it to willow springs soon but am concerned about this. One more thing it doesn't drive weird..

View 14 RepliesI have an 06 2.0T passat sedan. After a year, I started getting this loud rattling noise from one of the panels in the back everytime I hit a bump in the road. At first, I thought it was the rear tray behind the seats. But after sitting in the back with my son while my wife drove, I realized that it's a panel on the ceiling. It's this long thin panel that runs along the width of the rear ceiling, right along the top of the rear windshield. I'm thinking I could just remove the panel and put some sound proofing material or adhesive foam pads or something.

I thought that it had to do something with my left shock absorbers but the service consultant insists it's from the dashboard. They already tried to fix it before and did not do it. What could it be.
Another thing is I have some kind of wrinkles on my dashboard especially visible when the sun hits it and looks really ugly, they told me they won't replace it unless it breakes apart,...are they supposed to replace it or no? [URL] .....
Whenever I go over bumps or a rough piece of road there is a faint rattle coming from the drivers door. It just started doing it about a week ago and its driving me crazy . I am thinking door seal? I've called the dealer and they told me to come in to check it out.

View 1 RepliesI've been working on my car for a few weeks now and I've been doing my best to figure out. The source of this sort of 'metallic grinding' that I'm hearing within the cabin. I cant seem to pinpoint where it's coming from within the engine bay with the hood open (maybe due to the magnaflow exhaust diffusing the sound from the outside of my car). I can easily hear noise when I'm inside however with indications its coming from the lower central area of the engine bay. I drive an '04 Volkwagen GTI 1.8T
In the days I've been working on it I've replaced the:
1. Timing Belt (and tensioner pulley/tensioner dampener)
2. Water Pump
3. Serpentine Belt
4. Thermostat (and housing)
5. Clutch disk and flywheel (from a SMF to a LUK DMF clutch)
6. CV Axles (both drivers and passengers)
7. Clutch Cylinder Slave
8. Wheel Bearings (front left and right)
9. Rotors (Front Left and Right)
Diagnosis**
The car starts without any problems just as it use to prior to the replacements done. BUT it's once I get the car moving where I begin accelerating I start to hear a dull grinding noise/rumble that becomes more and more apparent the faster I go. It seems the sound is directly correspondent to wheel movement upon accelerating. Nevertheless I could be wrong.
I had a friend tag along to diagnose the sound and to him it sounded similar to the "tunneling of air not being properly sealed" but to me it sounds like a metallic grind. My friend also mentioned that he felt it was louder towards the passenger side in contrast to the drivers. As mentioned before the sound is reproduced anytime wheel movement occurs. I've checked torque spec for every replacement job done to the car so there are no loose bolts/nuts/brackets. (but there are exceptions, which I will get to).
Knowing that I've replaced both of the wheel bearings (and hub assembly) I can only assume the sources isn't from there. But I do admit a few mistakes while I had the car on jacks.
1. During the timing belt replacement I thought I would need to remove the exhaust (because I felt it would interfere with the lowering of the engine) so I, (without success), tried to remove the connection between the "bend of the exhaust" to the manifold which were 4 'turbo studs'. I had the worst time with the removal of studs but I was able to impact one them off, and as I tried another the strength of the impact broke one them half way through (meaning that I was able to unthread it a few threads but it snapped in the process, so I would need to somehow drill it out in order to replace it). This is where I gave up and did my best to install the one I had removed. Which I could only get threaded half of the way in.
-All in all I have 1 broken stud that still making a connection, and 1 protruding stud out of the 4 that connects the exhaust to the manifold.
Question: Can this be the cause of the sound? Without the full connection of 4 studs bolting exhaust to the manifold? Can this be the sound That my friend was referring to as the "tunneling air not being properly sealed"?
2. The second "mistake" isn't necessarily a mistake but a fault I found later that has to do with the Passenger CV Axle. I read a few forums here and read that it could be a problem with the axles, so I put the front end on jacks once again and found that there was a bit of movement of play on the axle shaft itself. In detail, the 2 connection points for the axle both at the Output differential flange and Hub assembly are secure and torqued to spec without any loose bolts.
BUT the rod itself seems to shift about a 1/2" between these two connecting points.
Question: Could THIS be the problem? With this type of 1/2" shift in the rod is it possible it can recreate the dull metallic grinding I'm hearing so much?
Been this way for awhile. I can smell gas with my windows down. It's very potent. Almost everyone that rides in my car can smell it. What could this be?

View 8 RepliesI just got my 2000 Passat back from the body shop. I rear-ended an SUV about a month ago and had my hood, front bumper, left headlight, A/C compressor, and radiator replaced.
HOWEVER, now when I let 'fresh air' into the cabin, I smell a strong exhaust smell. When I push the 'recycle air' button, the smell goes away. This leads me to think that somehow my exhaust pipe was cracked/damaged in the collision and is now spewing exhaust gas into the engine compartment - and thus when I allow fresh air (front the engine compartment) into the cabin...I am getting toxic exhaust blown in my face!
Where should I look for signs of an exhaust leak and is there an easy 'trick' to find the leak?
got a 2000 Passat b5, and all the cabin lighting has gone.
