My Phaeton has pretty audible whine when turning the steering wheel. Closer to lock- the louder the noise. Can I check the fluid myself or is this going to become a trip to the dealer?
View 5 RepliesSo recently, my car started making whining noises upon turning the steering wheel during cold starts. Now, it does it when the car is warmed up too. From what I can hear, its only during slow speeds. Can't take my car to the dealership anymore cause they will charge me $140 diagnostic fee for whatever issues I'm having due to my car being "tampered" with previously. (It's all stock now).
View 4 Replies2001 F350 XL... Fitting on PS pump broke and I lost PS and PB with fluid everywhere. Replaced the hose with a new one from Autozone and I have no noticeable leaks.
I know I lost more than a quart but I could only add less than a quart (Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF). I'm also getting a whine from the steering wheel when I turn stop to stop. The power steering is back and there are no leaks (that I see) but the brake pedal is mushy. I've pumped and turned stop to stop for a while. Do I have to bleed the system like I'm doing a fluid flush? I hate to waste the synthetic fluid that I changed about two years ago.
I noticed over the last week that there was a pretty loud whine associated with turning the steering wheel. I checked the fluid level and it didn't seem low. I added a touch just to make sure. Took it into the dealership today and they called back and told me there's a bunch of fluid on the bottom splash pan. They haven't said what the culprit is yet. 46k miles on the car.
View 6 RepliesI just got a 2013 Corolla Saturday (manual transmission). So far, I love the car, but I think I'm having a problem with the steering column. When I turn the steering wheel in a parked position, I can hear an audible "rubbing" noise coming from the column. I called the dealership, and spoke not only to the service department, but also to my salesman, who has one too. He says he's never heard that, and the service department assures me it's normal and is because it's an electric motor now instead of a fluid power steering system.
So, do I have reason to be concerned? Experienced this after only 300 or so miles on a new car? We traded a Scion IQ for this Corolla (didn't like the CVT whine in the IQ), and never heard anything like this.
I just noticed a whine in my steering when turning right and left on my 2010 SE. Sounds like I am out of power steering fluid but I checked the level and it looks fine. No signs of a leak.
View 7 RepliesHave a moderate pitch whine in front end only when steering or turning to right. Gets louder w higher speeds but pitch is about the same. Thought it was a left front wheeling bearing. Also needed new pads and rotor. While doing the job noticed grease all over the lower ball jt. Discovered a tear in the outer axle boot. Net net replaced pads, rotor, axle hub assembly and axle complete. To my chagrin the noise has changed one bit. The noise also doesn't change when I put the car in neutral while traveling downhill. With the hope that I replaced the wrong bearing I have ordered a new one for the right passenger side. When I tried the 6-12 wheel rocking test on the right there did not appear to be any looseness.
View 5 RepliesAfter seeing my new car my mom decided she wanted a new one too lol (i got a 2012 gti) so she traded her 2008 camry in for a new 2012 tiguan. I went to my parents house when they got it to see how the tsi is in the tig compared to my gti.
Her car has a whine from the steering wheel. She took it into vw (has had it now about 5 days) and they said it's normal and will go away. I don't believe the dealership in saying it will go away. I feel like it's something simple too like a squeaky bearing or something and just needs some lube. Also in low speeds/low rpm (it's an automatic) it sounds kinda loud (like putting manual in to high of a gear that low rumble type noise).
I have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L with 85K miles. TB, WP and all belts changed at 75K. Have had this whine noise when I turn right, very high pitch noise. On top of this there is now Power Steering fluid leaking from the reservoir and base and brackets are full of fluid... Needless to say I assume it is the reservoir seals giving up but why the noise only when I turn right? No noise when I turn left.
What could it be? Also where can I find parts online that are cheaper than the stealership? I called them and they quoted me $72.00 for this piece of plastic!!
What else should I change? There is also some "oil/fluid" coming down a pressure hose but I believe this is due to the oil dripping from the reservoir...
Any manuals I could use to view this? I bought the Haynes manual and it's worthless!
Lately I've been noticing an Intermittent/random steering wheel whine. It happens rarely, but as of late I heard it a couple times. I checked the fluid and its topped off. Car has about 85k on it. I'm not sure when it was last replaced.
I'm thinking My next step would be changing the fluid. What is the actual procedure for doing this? Also, if I do go ahead and change the fluid and still get a whine here and there. What would be my next step?
I am a recent new owner of an 06 f350 Powerstroke. Steering Box developed a leak so I decided to replace the box and go ahead and do the pump and hoses while at it. Pump would make some noise so i figured I'd just do it all and be done with it or so I thought. The job was a pain, much harder than the pump and boxes i've done on the older 7.3 powerstroke.
Anyways, used all OEM components (pump was a rebuilt rotorcraft, can't buy new anymore) and everything seemed great for about a day. I tried to bleed the air out per standard practice of turning the wheels with the truck off the ground. At startup and during the first day it had almost no noise at all and the steering felt much easier than the old pump.
Then the pump started to develop the standard annoying ford power steering whine that I hear all the time. Drove it over the weekend on a 160 mile trip and the noise just kept getting worse. As of tonight I can't turn the wheel if the truck is stopped even with my foot off the brakes.
I used synthetic ATF for fluid and there is absolutely no foam or aeration in the reservoir. Good news is I don't have any leaks but the bad is I now don't have power steering. It does make a much louder whine or squeak when I hit a large bump turning, I guess that's just the sound of the pump being stressed more. I am guessing the pump just crapped out but before I do it all over again.
Took delivery of my 2015 GTI a few weeks ago. Overall the car is great, but I have a feeling the tires that came with it just plain suck. They are Pirelli P7 Cinturato A/S. According to Tire Rack, these are grand touring tires?! Not exactly what I'd expect to be put on a GTI. Anyway, I've noticed that at almost exactly between 60mph-70mph there is a "whine" sound coming from them, also just the slightest vibration in the steering wheel. At every other speed they are relatively quiet and the wheel is absolutely dead solid, no vibration. Could these tires just be of relatively poor quality? Should I have them put on a balancing machine to see if everything checks out? I'm assuming these were balanced on a Road Force machine at the factory since that is the OEM for VW/Audi, but I'm not 100% sure obviously.

View 10 RepliesI was driving my 2004 VW Phaeton V8 (USDM) and stopped at a corner in the neighborhood. I then started going around the corner, when the steering just locked up for no reason and the battery light came on. I then shut down the engine and restarted it, making everything ok. What happened?!?

View 6 RepliesI have experienced a strange error 3 times now in the last few weeks. It appears that one or both of the headlights go out for a second or two; this if followed by a audible "beep" and a warning indication flashes over the center dash screen that states "check lights" or similar. A second or two later the front light(s) are back on. The warning is orange or yellow in color. My Phaeton has just over 37k miles.
View 6 RepliesMy year 11 3L V6 Phaeton has the heated steering wheel button fitted on the right side return of the wheel centre hub and it indeed does press in as though there is a switch there, but the wheel never gets warm and no lights/symbols come up on the console.
I guess the simple question is: Do VW fit these switched even if the option is not installed? I've taken a photo of the options sheet from the manual, at the link below: need to decipher some of these codes, that would be good too.

I notice that I have the steering wheel heater button on my 2006 V8. I pressed it, but the indication light did not come up on the display, and the wheel did not get warm.
View 10 RepliesI got my Phaeton, certified pre-owned, at 23k miles. Until 45k the brakes were flawless. Steering felt solid, no vibration or feeling of shaking of any kind when the brakes were depressed.
At 45k, I got the telltale "squeak" while depressing the brakes. I took the car in, was recommended to replace all corners, pads and rotors. The replace brakes message did not appear but I was pretty sure it was coming.
So I performed the recommended service at my local, Phaeton certified, VW dealer.
Here I am, 4k miles later, I am getting a vibration in the wheel while pressing the brakes. It seems to have gotten worse from 3k to 4k post-service. Also I hear and feel a "rubbing" noise while reversing that seems to respond to the brake pedal. Almost as if the brakes are engaged while reversing even while I'm not pressing the pedal.
I've had several other cars with warped rotors and the vibration in the wheel would lead me to believe that may be the case here. In my other cars this has only gotten worse with time. So I am contemplating discussing with the service manager to see what can be done. I drive the Phaeton quite gently, not aggressive at all.
I have just managed to remove my scratched steering wheel badge on my phaeton. It comprises two parts, the metal holder and a thin metal badge which is glued on. (if you look closely you should be able to see the edge of the badge)
I used a small screwdriver to deeply score the badge many times, then once through, the badge can be prised off with a pair of plyers!! I the cleaned the glue from the surface using nail polish remover and am now awaiting a 50mm stick on VW badge from eBay. Hope it looks good..
(2006 Phaeton) When driving down road car glides to right when releasing steering wheel. Dealership performed alignment and all checks out good. Has 2 makes of tires on each axle and they mentioned previous owner had directional tires going in wrong direction. Is it the tires?
