When I put my fob in and waiting for ICE to kick in, I here this weird sound under dash. I think it's pretty innocent, it sounds like a weak car horn that is not getting any juice. It's intermittent and it seems right in front of me under dash, or firewall.
The car starts fine and runs fine. It happens usually after car has set for maybe 3 days.
My 2005 F150 has developed an intermittent high pitch electronic tone that seems to be coming from the dash. Sometimes it comes on for a few seconds. Sometimes for several minutes. It never varies in pitch. It will occur even if the radio and fans are turned off. It will also occur if the engine is off and the key is just in the accessory position.
View 9 RepliesI just started getting 3 dash lights that come and go intermittently? ( I'm getting a (!), ABS and VSC lights in amber). I first had these three come on while I was traveling home one evening (traveling a little too fast /approx 84mph). This 2007 Prius has 276,000 miles on her. The lights will come on, them go out once I stop for a short period of time, or slow-down and travel at 40-50 mph.
I've checked the 12V battery and its seem to meet at the recommended voltages. I did have a recall on the inverter water pump around 150K. With that said, the pump does have circulation when I remove the cap? Over the 6+ years that I've owned this car, I've only changed the oil (synthetic), replaced tires, changed a water pump/alternator belt and a second set of replacement front brake pads. This has been the BEST car (maintenance and economy-wise) that I've ever owned! She's still consistently getting 48.2mpg. I've ordered the OBD pigtail and diagnostic software....
I just returned from a 4K trip through 7 states and my cruise control will go batty and make you pull over and re-boot the car. Basically I am cruising down the interstate with cruise control on. When I come into a town I will either pull the cruise lever forward or step on the brakes to disengage it.
The traffic comes to a stop or slows to a crawl for a short period of time. Once the traffic starts to move again and we are back to highway speeds I can no longer use the cruise control because it is intermittently flashing on the dash as a malfunction. The only time it doesn't do this is when I am slowing down if I turn the power off to the cruise control system.
I stopped in the middle of my trip at two different dealers and there were no codes stored. One dealer charged me a diagnostic the second didn't after I showed him my receipt from the day prior from the other dealer but then he wanted to sell me a brand NEW MFD.
My father in law has an 04 EX with the 5.4. It has a weird sound coming from the front passenger side. He listened to the jiffy lube kid who told him it was the brakes. I pulled one side completely apart tonight and the brakes are fine. We took it for a drive so I could hear the noise. It is coming from the passenger side up front. It is intermittent.
Doesn't matter if we hit a bump or pot hole. It sounds like a cat being run over. It will either last for a few seconds or just really quick. I crawled underneath and could not find anything loose. The first time I heard it I thought it was a shock. But the second time it was way too long to be a shock. And they are only a year old.
Secondly, it has a cat, and two mufflers..... Is this normal?
I have a 2004 GX470 that has been the best car. However a new sound has been heard coming from the interior behind the dash. Click Click Click and is constant even when a/c is off and radio is off. Only happens when car is running.
View 6 RepliesMy 2010 prius is making a strange sound, and has been since day one.
It makes a "Clicking" sound sometimes that can be heard inside the cabin and sounds like it is coming from the center dash. It is definitely NOT a squeaky dash or door panel or anything like that. It is definitely electrical in nature. It almost sounds like a very fast clicking relay or maybe another electrical component. It is fairly high pitched (not like the inverter whine, though) and definitely clicking (maybe buzzing), not constant. It sort of sounds like a cricket. I am working on adding some audio/video to this post, should have some up today.
Here are some things I have noticed about the noise:
1. Only happens when gas pedal is depressed, not when braking or coasting.
2. When the display is in "Eco" it happens loudest and consistently when the bar is 3/4 of the way full, but it can happen (although the clicking is slower and less consistent) at 1/2 or just before the power section of the bar.
3. The car must be "warmed up" i.e. doesn't happen right away, car must be driven for 10-15 min if engine is cool.
4. Seems to be happening more/more quickly after starting the car in the hotter weather (I purchased my car in Feb.)
I have a 08 F150 king ranch and have a couple of issues. There is a strange sound coming from the dash behind the gauges it sounds like a computer hard drive clicking and the heater seems to be stuck on will not even blow outside fresh air.

It almost sounds like an AC compressor issue (had the same problem with my F-250) but there is also an accompanying "gurgling" sound as well. AC problems with the Gen 2 after 160,000 miles?
View 7 RepliesI had a persistent soft rattle that sounded like it was coming from the dash area. Looked there, pulled the glove box off, taped a wire, and padded where the glove box meets the dash board, padded my right hand mud flap, and padded the glove box door upper RH corner, all to no good effect. Then just a few days ago I pushed the shotgun seat forward and reclined the seat back all the way.
The next day I looked under the seat. There are three yellow plastic electrical connectors that control the airbag and sensor. They are surprisingly rickety by design. Double side taping a 1.5 thick inch soft foam pad on top of the connectors, between them and the underside of the seat did the trick. I LOVE conquering rattles.
I have a 2002 Hyundai elantra GT. Since I've got the car last year I've had this intermittent problem with the dash lights coming on every once in a while not really a lot at all. It never bothered me before because they would come on for maybe two minutes then turn off and didn't cause any problems whatsoever.? I think because they were coming on during the day. I never realized it happening at night time. In the last month the lights came on at night time and blew out all my headlights. I replaced them three times already. I read that maybe the alternator is overcharging. I haven't checked anything yet.. I'm very mechanically inclined. Just not with electrical...
View 3 RepliesI am the original owner of a 2008 Prius, and am familiar with the various noises that the car likes to make. However, a new clicking noise has started recently, and need to identify the source/cause, so I can (hopefully) repair it myself, or have it repaired cost effectively.
I have attached a pic of what I think is the source of the noise.
This pic is looking upwards under the dash, above the brake pedal. In the center of the pic is a white thingamajig. This thing is attached to a motor on the right side (to the right of what I think is a yellow bearing or washer), and the other end is attached to a darker gray arm. When the climate control makes an adjustment, the motor turns, the white plastic piece turns, and the arm moves. What appears to happen is that sometimes, the motor continues to operate when it shouldn't, and these plastic pieces all kind of move around, clicking.
I've got a 2006 with about 108k on it. I've noticed in the last month (or two) an odd sloshing of water that occurs BEHIND THE DASH when the car is first turned on and then appears to go away when warmed up. About a mile from my house this morning, I noticed the sound again when taking a right turn at a stop sign. This concerns me.
Here's what I've done:
1) Fluids are fine in the car. Checked them nothing low
2) no codes have been logged in my car.
3) I've researched this site and thought clogged evaporator ac drain tube so I tried clearing it.
I fired up the compressor, got underneath the car and proceeded to blast small shots of air up the tube. Nothing happened. No water coming out. Btw, there has not been any water drainage inside the car on either the driver or passenger side.
This is a true scratching sound...not a buzz or a whine or a squeak. I hear it mainly when the car hasn't been driven for several hours, and it is a constant sound (not intermittent). When I cut the power off, the sound stops immediately. It also eventually stops if I drive long enough (say 30 minutes to an hour). It seems to be coming from the driver's side dash, but I suppose it could be coming from some component under the hood on the driver's side. Of course, my service department is over an hour away and the sound has stopped by the time I get there. They did check for any signs of rodents, but everything was clean. But as I said, the sound stops as soon as the power is cut.
View 1 Replies1996 lincoln towncar wont start intermittently. Started doing this yesterday, was troubleshooting and my friend jumped the starter to check it and he said it was good. I messed with a few fuses wires and it started up fine. Drove today with no problem, parked and it won't start again... same as yesterday... turn key and all u get is a clicking sound from the inside sounds like under the glovebox in the dash...
View 12 RepliesMy ex-wife has a 2008 Prius. When trying to get heat, either using Auto A/C or manual, the display panel shows that only the floor vents are open. However, forced air is flowing from the upper vents on the dash. The air from these vents is not warmed. It seems to be unheated outside air. It's unclear whether this is a new problem, since the owner doesn't know if this behavior has been there since she bought the car. She does report that the car has always taken a long time to get comfortable in winter.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2004 prius with about 350k miles on it, bought it about a year ago and we have had our first trouble with it (it's been great so far, and when you consider it's mileage, pretty impressive).
We were driving along and a constant alarm started (beeeeep!!!) and lights on the dash lit up. I assumed it was cranky because the rear hatch wasn't closed or something and kept driving (we didn't have far to go). It wasn't long before smoke with a distinctive burnt electronics smell started coming up from the dash at the front left lower corner of the windshield. Then the brakes started to feel very unresponsive and sluggish (no regenerative braking either). She still runs and drives. So here is where I am now:
The car screams constantly and the brake light, ABS light and the (!) light are all lit.
I've been poking about and figured out that my inverter coolant pump isn't working properly. At this point I am wondering if this is just pure coincidence though (i.e. perhaps its not been working for awhile). I will be replacing this soon.
I checked the error codes and they all seemed to be un-related and or old (catalytic converter not working properly, ran out of fuel, etc). I cleared them and no new ones are populating. (car has only been driven around the block 3 times though)
The 12 V battery seems to be working fine, and it's getting the proper charging voltage. (voltage tested through the console under various conditions)
I have reset the braking system (bridging the #4 and #13 pins thing) and this turned the buzzer and lights off for about 20 seconds. Still no proper brakes. And of course the noise and lights just come back. Still no error codes via my Bluetooth reader and smartphone.
I have my doubts that replacing the inverter pump will fix this brake issue. I am familiar with working on cars, but this is my first foray with 1) a modern car and 2) a Prius. (Previous cars are all mid 90s or older, so I'm a little bit overwhelmed here...)
First off it's a 2008 Prius with 80K on it.
There is a new sound that has started coming from the front of the car in the engine compartment or even lower. It is a turning turbine like sound that is mostly obvious when driving at 60 mph, but my guess is that it is always there, but not as audible at lower speeds. The air and heater are both off and have no effect on this sound. The only thing that could have had anything to do with it is that a day or two before, the tires were low so I filled them to 40 psi. The other thing is that it clicked over to 80K the last week and the friendly red maintenance required light came on.
I get a knock noise, actually more of a crack sound, when going over a bump with front nearside wheel. It sounds like it’s coming from behind and on a level with the glove compartment. I have checked suspension and steering components (including strut top nuts) which seems good and emptied junk out of glove compartment but noise persists.
View 13 RepliesI have had my 07' Prius about a month now and have noticed a odd sound coming from the left front of the car when accelerating. When I accelerate I hear an off metallic crackling sound. It almost sounds like marbles swishing around. The sound is coming from the left side of the car in the engine bay. If I had to guess it sound like it's coming from under the invertor area. The sound only happens when I am accelerating at a moderate pace.
View 10 RepliesThis morning when I heard some knocking from the ICE and found NO oil on the dipstick. You wouldn't BELIEVE the drive the car did the day before when I lent it to my sister-in-law). Anyway, I thought the red triangle would illuminate with low oil. I can't seem to get the light to illuminate. Even when I first start the car and "all" indicators light up during the test. I'd say this is one important light. We've had the car less than a month and I could swear that when we first got it I saw the triangle at start up.
