Having issues with Gen3 Prius steering column? I suddenly developed this clunking noise when I rock my steering wheel from left to right. It's steering correctly but I've never heard this noise before....
View 7 RepliesI'm getting this weird sound when i turn on my car and turn the steering wheel left and right not even a full lock just left and right really quickly or slow there is this annoying clunking coming form both of the front wheels atleast thats what i think it is and it feels as something is loose but i checked most of the bolts.. Recently i changed my front wheel bearings inner cv and outer cv joints on both front wheels.. i changed my ball joints and tie rods everything was change within a 4-5months..
Also the other day as i was driving and i could only hear this 20mph and up this weird clunking and vibration in the floor.. no vibration in the steering wheel just the floor and clunking sound.. i know for a fact i need an alignment and possibly new tires.. but what would the clunking be coming form when driving or just parked in place while moving the steering wheel...
Our 2012 Prius with now 17,000 miles in 8 months has developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially far to the right at low speeds.
The first time the dealer identified it as a failed intermediate shaft and replaced it under warranty. Shortly after we told them it was starting to make the noise again, but they claimed they couldn't replicate the sound and anything they heard was normal 'linkage' (whatever that is). Shortly thereafter the clunking progressed so we took it in for now the third time, and they confirmed the problem, spoke with Toyota who said we must have had a bad part, and replaced it again.
I just replaced my rotors, and tie rod ends on both sides. Now I have a clunking noise when I turn left. I also have erratic steering, the car swerves when I take a slight left, and I have to turn further to the right to get it to swerve back straight. If I hit a bump, car swerves left. Is this an alignment issue? I haven't taken it to get aligned yet, everywhere around here is closed. Could it be the Axle?

View 3 RepliesLately my 2007 Camry (2.4 L, Auto) has developed a bit strange problem. When I'm driving on highway, even slight left turn results in a grinding noise and sort of resistant steering wheel. It happens only when I turn left. As soon as steering wheel gets back to straight, the noise and steering wheel resistance/hardness goes away. I don't really feel much when I'm driving slow on the city streets. Although some time when I am little bit fast, I feel slight grinding noise and steering hardness. No problem in turning right at all.
View 5 RepliesI just recently replaced the inner and outer tie rods an got a 4 wheel alignment on my 2005 camry le and now whenever you turn the steering wheel all the way lleft or right, it makes a loud groaning noise, and it sounds like something is scraping kinda? What this could be an how to solve this problem? It is not low on power steering fluid...!
View 3 RepliesToday, I just picked up my 2014 prius. Basically, when I do a right/left turn on the car, when accelerating out of the turn, the steering wheel does not fully return to the center position (its approximately in the one/eleven o'clock position). Also, if I leave the wheel straight, and drive straight, the car will drive straight and not pull towards the side so I don't think its an alignment issue. I'm not sure if this is normal, or if its happening just because they car is new or just because I'm not accelerating hard enough out of the turn (I always stayed in the eco range with the HSI. )
View 5 RepliesCar is in for knocking sound made when you are stopped and you turn the wheel quick from left to right. Also does the same thing when you hit a bump. Dealer is saying it was always that way I say bs. 2008 prius.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 Pruis. Lately I have been noticing a problem with the cruise control. Often when I press the button to turn on the CC it will not come on, but if I turn the steering wheel to the left a bit I am able to turn on the cruise, sometimes when I turn the wheel back it will continue to work and other times it will not. I tried to search and found others posts about prius CC but couldn't find anything that included all of my symptoms.
View 6 RepliesThe problem started a few months back and has been getting progressively worse. Unfortunately for my Prius I have been in the middle of remodeling my house so I have been neglecting the problem and now it is time to face it before something bad happens.
So, It is a 2005 Prius with 189k+ miles on it. I started getting a vibration/clunking noise in the front end while driving with the steering wheel centered. It also turns on the traction control alert and sometimes slows the car down when turning and the only way to get it to stop is to turn the wheel the other way. It started only happening at higher speeds of 65mph+ but progressively got worse until it now happens as low as 35mph.
I thought that it was the drive axle as it seemed to be characteristic of that with the vibration (When the problem first started it seemed to only happen when accelerating, but now happens all the time), so I replaced the LH drive axle as well as the sway bar tie rod (The joints were very worn and loose), but the problem still exists.
I have replaced the ball joints(a year and a half ago) and put in the the ecs tuning control arms with the solid bushing. Recently, I have had a clunking sound, from the left wheel, when turning right. Kind of sounds like the ball joints when they were bad. This noise only occurs when I turn right under about 30mph. It also feels like the wheel might be doing a quick "wiggle." Do you think it is the ball joint again? Could a bad wheel bearing be doing this? I have replaced the right wheel bearing, but have not done the left one yet.
View 2 RepliesI have a new 2 week old Prius 4. So far I love it. I've put about 600 miles on it. This past weekend I spent a decent amount of time on the freeway and noticed an issue with my steering. I'm pretty sure it is an alignment issue.
The car tracks straight. When I let go of the wheel the car goes dead straight but...the steering wheel is a bit off center turn slightly to the left. If I hold the wheel and turn the steering wheel right to exactly straight the car will go right. It's like they they aligned the car with the steering wheel slightly off center.
I bought 2015 Prius two 2 month ago and the mileage is almost reaching 2000 mile. I am satisfied with my Prius so far. However about 2 weeks ago I found that the steering wheel is little off centered to the right and the car is leaning to the left. I didn't drive on the potholes so I guess the issue has been there from the first day I bought the car. I was just too excited to see the issue at the time I think. Anyway I brought the car to the Toyota dealership where is close to my work. I explained the issue and the technician drove the car and said it seems ok. I said it's not my first car and I have driven several cars so I am certain that the steering wheel is off centered. I researched this forum so I knew the first wheel alignment is covered by the warranty. They seemed reluctant to provide the service but I insisted.
After about an hour they had done the wheel alignment and showed me the result and the result said everything is ok and all the numbers are in the range. It was strange so I asked what if the car is still pulled off to the left and he said there is nothing he can do further so if the issue is still there, the service manager should be involved. I hoped the issue would be resolved but when I drove the car back to home I could still see that the steering wheel was still off centered just like before the wheel alignment. I called them and made another appointment on this coming Monday. I read all the steering wheel alignment related threads and found that it's pretty common issue for the new cars. But I found few people that the issue was completely gone. I think it's a quite easy job to fix by adjust something to make the steering wheel rotated little to the left(3~5 degree). I showed to my wife today to see if I'm too sensitive and she also agreed that the car is pulled to the left.
My 2007 Camry makes clunking noises when I turn the steering wheel to the left mostly. This happens most often when the weather is warm and hot but not during the winter time.
The noise seems to come only from around the steering wheel area inside my vehicle. Hence, I don't think it has to do with the CV Joints or anything like that but the steering wheel unit.
Just got my 2013 RX 350 CPO and been driving it for 2 weeks without any problem. But today when I was trying to steer my wheel all the way to the left (car was parked) and I heard rubbing noise coming from wheel base. It only happens when making hard left steering not right.
I read online and seems like it's a common problem for wheel bearing for Lexus cars.
My '02 has a growling noise only when I turn the wheel to the left. It doesn't seem to matter if it's turned slightly to the left or all the way, the noise is the same and you can feel it in the floor and wheel. If the wheel is straight or turned to the right, there isn't a noise at all. The growl is speed related and seems to be noticeable from 5mph and up. Does this sound like the typical power steering module when it's about to fail?
I took a video while driving to show the steering wheel, speedo and you could hear the growl as I turned the wheel, but I wasn't able to attach it to this message. I did get the PS error on the MFD 2 times in the last 2 weeks. What does the power steering module look like and how tough is it for a DIY'er to replace?
I drove our 2007 Prius (79K miles) the other day and noticed a whirring or slight grating noise whenever I loaded up the left front wheel (by steering right) at speed. It's far from a hum or a howl at this point.
View 14 RepliesThe car is a 2.8L w/ a manual tranny. The car was making a rhythmic clunking and clicking noise around right hand turns on the left wheel. So when the weight of the vehicle is applied to the left, that's when the noise occurs. The car has been in the shop for 6 days and the technicians have replaced both axle shafts (it was time to do so anyway) but the noise is still there!!! What could possibly be making that noise other than bad CV's? The rhythm of the noise coincides with the rotation of the wheel/shaft which is where they have focused. Could it possibly be bad strut mounts? This is driving me crazy!!! They tell me its perfectly safe to drive (how do they know this when thy don't know whats wrong?) but I can't imagine this can carry on much longer without something breaking.

View 2 RepliesSo I just came back from the stealer(Koeppel). I had them check out my car because it was making this clunking sort of noise from the steering wheel. When you turn the steering wheel, when it is turned straight, left and right, it makes this obnoxious noise. It sounds pretty bad.I thought it might be an axle problem or possibly a bearing. Now heres the funny part. My dealer says that it is normal. They said they called VW technical support and they told them that the way the rack&pinion was built on our cars, that causes the noise. He said i can show you 3 other Passats that make the same noise. I didn't bother because i did not have the time. I am going to go tomorrow again to see if they can find anything else on it. If they dont, i am going to ask them to show me the other Passats with the same noise.
