I have intermittent loss of the windshield wipers, AC/heater fan and lights (and the brake light is lit even with brake off). I can turn the bright lights on by pulling the lever. Other electronic things work- radio, inside lights, turn signals. Usually if I turn the car off and start over it goes away. Fuses appear ok. It's a VW Jetta 97 GLS with about 75K miles. where to start?
View 1 RepliesWe were borrowing my brother-in-law's 2006 Jetta and the day after a snow storm, the windshield wipers stopped working. They came up half way and then stopped and don't move further. You can hear a whirring noise,like something is trying to go, but no movement. We've been quoted $500-600 to replace the windshield wipers and motor, but we don't think they need to be replaced, just repaired.
View 6 RepliesMy 01 VW Jetta with 181690 miles started having intermittent loss of power a year ago:
1) it never conks out;
2) it loses power on the highway at 70 or in town at 25;
3) engine is usually hot, about an hour into a trip, but now does it cold, too;
4) weather doesn't matter: dry or wet;
5) check engine light flashes while it happens
6) it feels like it's running out of gas but isn't.
Mechanics have tried the following: Note: every time I brought it in to be looked at, the symptoms above were happening :
1) March 2013: replaced coil pack and it ran fine until Sep;
2) Sep 2013: ran Dx on check engine light: "arching all over the place" so replace spark plug wires;
3) Dec 2013: got oil changed
4) Jan 2014: ran Dx and was told crack in piston;
5) Jan 2014: got second opinion and told wrong spark plugs were used (single electrode vs triple electrode)-replaced all spark plugs; got car inspected and had oil changed again as it was dirty;
6) Feb 2014 mechanic is stumped, but found an article about clean oil and changed the oil again. Oil was down almost a quart.
I have a 1997 explorer 5.0 AWD. The problem is that when it is about 44 degrees and below, the windshield wipers, power windows, and interior lights don't and won't work. We will run the heater until it warms up the interior, then everything seems to work fine. I usually leave the wipers on so I know when it is warmed up enough. I have checked all of the fuses and all are fine. the only thing that I can think of is there is a crack in the back of the fuseblock that breaks contact when the metal is cold.
View 2 RepliesMy daughter has a 2005 VW GTI which has had a series of bizarre electrical problems. The latest was with the windshield wipers. Sometimes they work properly. Often, when the weather gets damp, they go on by themselves. (This is not a feature - they don't automatically go on when it rains, it might just be humid.) Sometimes, turning the front wipers off will turn the back wipers on. Turning the back wipers on will turn the front wipers off. The other day, she needed to drive 40 miles to work. It was not raining at the time, but it was threatening.
The only way to turn the front wipers off, was to turn the back wiper on. The only way we could get both wipers off at the same time, was to remove the fuse for the back wiper and turn the back wiper on. In the event of rain, she could then turn the back wiper off to make the front wipers go on. We have brought the car to the dealer several times. They replaced the relay twice. They swear they have checked the entire system and can find nothing wrong. The last time it happened, we showed them that it was impossible to turn the wipers off. They have seen the problem, but they still can't fix it.
Okay, to start i've disconnected my rain sensor so i do not have auto wipers, instead the wipers are intermittent when in the first, AUTO, position. with that being said....
When I was driving and had the LOW wiper position selected (not AUTO) and the wiper speed dial set to (-) , when the car comes to a stop or is parked, the LOW wipers switch to intermittent where they will pause in the (-) dial setting, for about 2.5 seconds. if the dial is set to (+) you do not notice this happening as the wipers re-engage too quickly. and then once you start moving again, the wipers return to the LOW setting and run continuously.
Does it also happen when your rain sensor still works? My guess is it's a luxury function so when you are nto moving, less rain hits the water, and you don't have to deal with wipers on a drier windshield making the low squeegee noise.
Why does my front windshield wipers come on when I turn on my rear defroster?
View 2 RepliesAs soon as I start the car the windshield wipers start on their own and wont stop. I diagnosed the relay as my fualt and I was partly correct. I put the new relay and it worked. However I still had the rear wiper motor disconnected. Once I plugged rear motor back in, the front windshield wipers started going on their own and won't stop again. So, what should be next? Motor diagnoses? I can't see any visual water damage in the motor when the cover is off.
View 8 RepliesWhen driving in the rain, I've had the scary experience of the windshield wipers suddenly stop working. Maybe 30 seconds later, they start working again. I'm just glad the cars in front of me have had their lights on. It even seems that the wipers go the same speed no matter how fast I want them to. Also, the blades do rub against the windshield. Is it the linkage or should I simply replace the blades?

View 2 RepliesMy Windshield wipers randomly come on once in a while. I've noticed it more on a warmer day, but sometimes even when it is cold. There is really no pattern, sometimes the go once, sometimes they go for 2-3 minutes. Where should I start? Switch or wiper motor, maybe something else?

I'm not sure if the this is a problem with the stalks on the steering column or possibly a relay.
When i pull the left stalk my high beams will come on but only when i do that.
The windshield wipers would not turn on at all and the windshield wash would not even spray as well.
I also noticed that my AC/Heat controls wouldnt respond either. Any clue as to what it might be.
I just bought a 1998 ford f150. Wipers do not work, the wipers only work when i hit windshield washer, but no washer fluid comes out, what could it be?
View 2 RepliesWhat is wrong with my 2006 VW Jetta. The windshield wipers quit working all of a sudden. I stopped to get gas and turned off the wipers( it was raining), got gas and went to turn on the wipers, they are not working. I don't even hear the motor run. When I was trying to research online, one of the solutions I came across was spraying WD-40 on the motor to dry up the water and try to fix the problem.here are my questions. 1. does this work? 2. do I need a new motor? 3. If I decide to spray WD-40, do I need to take the wiper arms and the plastic guard on the front to access the motor or can I spray through the grill on the plastic cover?
View 1 RepliesI have had the car sense it was brand new and sense I have had it I have had this problem. I mostly notice a problem soon after starting the engine up and come to a stop, but is not limited to that all the times. When I come to a stop the car will feel like it is struggling to maintain an idle as I sit at the light or stop sign and it will actually shake the car a bit. I have noticed when it does do this the fan is on and it might be related to having the alternator trying to keep up with power draw.
I have noticed a loss of power when I am driving down the road it will cut out for maybe a half a second and come back. Usually doesn't happen more than once in one trip. I have brought it to the dealership multiple times to try and see if the can hunt down a problem but it keeps coming back with a clean bill of health. So my question is it something that is normal with diesel engines or is it something that I should take a further look at.
And while on the topic of diesel engines, my uncle a mechanic for diesel engines suggested that I spray a small amount of propane into the air intake to burn up sludge to keep the engine relatively clean. Need to get second opinion of that idea before I try it?
I just got a 2000 toyota echo from my dad and it is having a strange problem when i turn on the windshield wipers the front two lights for like the parking lights come on and i have replace the wiper motor and it still does it and I also checked my ground wires good this be a pitched wire or the switch going bad ...
View 2 RepliesI have a 2002 Jetta TDI Manuel. New to me from brother. While there are some issues I can deal with ....soft touch turned to goo, etc there is one thing I am worried about.
He said the lights(all electrics) will go out intermittently. Head lights, turn signals, radio, interior lights. He says the car runs fine while the electronics are out (except no headlights). Usually only happens for a few seconds but occasionally will last minutes. Longest it has happened is 10 minutes and the lights all come back on by themselves.
What could cause this and what needs to be done for fixing? He is a outboard mechanic and has kept the car up great, but he doesn't like to mess with wiring/electrics. I'm sure he has checked the basics.
At times my windshield wipers stall halfway up my windshield or move really slowly. Other times absolutely fine, I already checked both battery terminals and niether were the issue. What's the best way to get to the wiper motor to check the connections. Or does it sound like a ground strap issue elsewhere on the car.

View 2 RepliesI have been having a problem with an oil leak around this sensor port in my Jetta, I'm not really sure which sensor this is. The sensor itself is covered with a rubber hood that covers the connector, when I start the engine, it blows this hood back, revealing the blue plastic of the sensor.
