Kidney Stones? Nausea / Vomiting - Upper Back Pain Waves

Jan 11, 2015

I have had an achy upper back pain for a few days now. I was attributing it to having slept funny, but now I am thinking it was a warning sign I missed. I woke up at 2am with horrible nausea and sharp pain in my upper left back. It comes in waves and was so severe it brought tears to my eyes. I have had kidney pain from infection in the past and while different I think this pain may be kidney related too. I am trying to find some way to get comfortable enough to sleep since it is the middle of the night and I don't want to wake two sleeping babies and drag them to the ER. I tried calling the nurse helpline provided by my insurance company, but he just told me to try a heating pad and some Tylenol.
I have a lot of prescription pain meds in my medicine cabinet because I have had 2 c sections and another surgery within the last couple years and I hate taking pain meds... I took an oxycodone.  That along with a vibrating massage mat under my back seems to be helping with the pain for the moment, but the nausea is even worse now. Any suggestions for that? I just need to make it to morning so I can go to an urgent care clinic. There is no one to watch the babies right now and of course o would get sick on Sunday when my primary care doc is closed.

Kidney Stones, Pain, Nausea, Depression

I'm not sure where to put this and I'm fairly certain I do not have enough space for all of this. But I will try anyways.

I am 27 years old and male. And my life right now is not great. I have a long list of medical problems most of which have gone untreated for years and are all more or less working together to ruin my life. Since I do not have the appropriate length here to explain all of this a simple list will have to do for now.

Current Issues:

Chronic Pain left and right flank

Chronic Nausea (will result in vomiting)

ADHD (untreated)

Anxiety (Untreated)

Depression (untreated)

Sleeping problems

Eating/Weight problems

Chronic Kidney stones

UPJ obstruction and Hydronephrosis of the Left Kidney (3 surgeries to repair)

What I NEED help with is Identifying what I need to do to make this better. I have been seeing doctors for the past 23 years of my Life. I honestly need A LOT more space to explain all of this.

Back Pain :: Appendicitis, Kidney Stones, Ectopic Pregnancy?

I am having very severe lower back pain that came out of nowhere. Worst pain I've ever had.it is constant. Tylenol is not helping nor ice packs, heating pad, or hot bath. I have been vomiting and can't even keep fluids down. I was constipated this morning but did have a bm followed by diarrhea. I have a slight fever. Could this be appendicitis, kidney stones, or possibly an ectopic pregnancy? I don't know if I am pregnant or not. Please help!

Two 5mm Kidney Stones :: Pain In Back - On Potassium Citrate And FloMax

Hi all... so I have two 5 millimeter kidney stones in my left kidney started last month,,, been on potassium citrate, FloMax and drinking lots of water, still they wont pass.... I have also added lemonade (not from concentrate) to my list of fluids..

Urologist said I shouldn't have a lot of pain, well I am in discomfort in my back where the kidney is, so he sent me for a CT scan today to see how large they are. Tomorrow morning I go back to see him. Was wondering will these ever pass or are they gonna have to be crushed?

Kidney Stones :: Intense Back Pain Radiating To The Front

I woke up Monday morning with intense back pain that radiated to the front and cause sweating and nausea.  It lasted about 20 minutes and was gone.  I have had this about 5 or 6 times with months and even years in between.  This is the first time I went to the emergency room.  They worked me up for cardiac issue but found nothing thank goodness.  They did do a cat scan but said nothing about a kidney stone.  I am wondering if I could have passed a stone without knowing it or if the stone might be undetectable on a cat scan.  We have not been able to figure out what causes these episodes.

Kidney Stones :: Azathioprine For Ulcerative Colitis - Vomiting And Blood In Urine

I have been on azathioprine for 9 months now for my UC and is well under control now.

I have recently been having episodes of extreme abdo pain (not bowel) that comes on all of a sudden and lasts for a few hours..also these episodes include vomiting and passing blood in my urine (last one looked like there was sand in it).

So I'm thinking this is my body trying to pass kidney stones??

Has anyone had this experience after taking azathioprine?? Maybe I'm not drinking enough to flush the toxins through from the meds?

Kidney Stones - Diabetes - Constant Urge To Pee And Nausea

Since last Weds evening, about 5-6 days ago, I felt like I was getting a UTI. Had persistent urge to pee, every 20 mins or so, all night, and sometimes I really had to go and sometimes just a dribble but felt like bladder not empty and I'd pee and immediately feel like I had to go again. Had some burning and general discomfort. I also felt like I might have a yeast infection - I have type 1 diabetes (24 years, am almost 45 yrs old, female) and get them often. So on Thurs symptoms still were there so went to gyno to do a urine sample that they said they'd send for culture. They gave me prescription for antibiotics, which I did not fill till the next morning - on Fri morning, still had frequency to pee and also some on and off left-sided flank pain, some lower back pain, some twinges on and off way low in my urethra area - that was all new. Started antibiotic on Fri. felt a tiny bit of relief but had reaction to Macrobid (sp?) so doc called in Cipro, which I started on Sat. By Monday still no better, was still peeing constantly and having the flank pain and back pain on and off. Went back to gyno who said my urine culture came back clear - no bacteria so this was not a UTI or kidney infection. He did say there was a trace of blood in the sample - but I have not seen any blood in my urine myself. Doc performed a pelvic exam to rule out ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids and all was normal. So he suggested it could be a kidney stone, to see the urologist so that is where I am. Still miserable and peeing constantly.

I have never had kidney stones ever. Today still peeing all the time and some on and off back pain, hip pain and even some mild thigh pain - all both sides although flank pain is more left sided. It all comes and goes and is not excruciating and when my husband had a stone, he was in terrible pain and rushed to ER and ended up passing stone that night.

So here's the weird thing - since Sept I was experiencing upper right stomach pain, right under my ribs, nausea after large or fatty meals, constant burping, on and off constipation. So I had an ultrasound done to check for gallstones by my regular dr - everything was normal. They checked kidneys and no stones showed up on ultrasound. I am scheduled for a HIDA scan for gallbladder next week bc still having those symptoms but this urinary stuff is new. All blood work normal. Upper GI endoscopy normal also.

I am a mess! And I just want answers. Not sure if it's all related or I may be dealing with 2 separate conditions or maybe what I've been experiencing as gallbladder pain has been kidney-related all along.

Do all kidney stones show up on ultrasound or is it possible to still have them and have them not show up? That only a CT scan will catch?

Could the constant peeing still be a UTI/kidney infection without bacteria showing in urine culture?

I now have a yeast infection from the antibiotics and treating it. Could it worsen the peeing problem?

Has anyone ever had kidney stones that showed symptoms like this for a long period of time before the excruciating pain of passing happened? Or could this be a problem w/my kidneys and function? Being type 1 diabetic, I worry about this but all my regular kidney blood tests are always normal - I see doc ever 4 months for that.

Undiagnosed :: Bloody Vomiting With Weight Loss And Pain In Right Upper Quadrant

For the last 30 days I have been extremely sick and in and out of the ER, the GI doctor, as well as my Primary Care Physician.

I have dropped 27lbs so far, without being able to keep little to no food down. Right upper abdomen quadrant pain is constant and sharp, fevers and chills on and off, lack of appetite, burping, indigestion, gas, and so on, and it has gotten to the point that I get dizzy very easily and also extremely tired no matter how much sleep I get.

My doctor put me on an IBS medication though I am not having any trouble with constipation. He asked me to perform tests "Try consuming things like: beer, cheese, peanut butter, milk. If it causes you pain then call and leave a telephone consult and I will get back with you" Beer test- it went alright other than the immense amount of pain it put me in, woke up after just deciding to go to bed, vomiting up with tiny chunks of blood. Cheese, cant eat it without pain, same with peanut butter and milk.

I have tried a very bland diet but nothing seems to stay completely down, I may get a small part of it digested but that is about it everything else comes up.

I have tried coffee, cant have that anymore because I cant drink it without creamer. I am already under a vegetarian diet for the last three years, but it is no use.

I have had a HIDA scan but the doctors said "You're gallbladder is at 60%. There is nothing wrong with you." X-ray, ct-scan, and ultrasound all came back with the same result. Of course, this coming from military doctors, so it isn't like the civilian world.

I have been going back and forth between the doctors for this last month, and I go through this nearly every year, two to four times each year, but this one is extremely long lasting and extremely painful. So painful that I start seeing spots and get very faint thus having to lay down. They gave me stuff for GERD as I already was in speech therapy two years ago because my Larynx closed up on me for a PT test, they accumulated it due to indigestion (something I do not ever get).

Back Issues :: Chest, Arm And Upper Back Pain

I am 29 and Female. I have been under a great deal of stress lately. I have been having some minor health problems that cause my mind to go to that dark place. I am having very irregular periods and GERD/Gallbladder issues. Also, I am planning a wedding and my mother was just diagnosed with Lung cancer about 2 weeks ago.

My upper back across the "meaty" part of my shoulders has been so tight and painful. If my fiance rubs them, he finds all kinds of trigger points that are so painful to the touch I can't breathe. In the middle of my upper back I feel a sharp pain sometimes. My neck muscles are tight as well as the tops of my arms down to my elbows. On occasion my fingers tingle.

As of the past 2 days I feel a pressure on my chest right below my collar bone. If I yawn I can feel my throat muscles get sore. The very top of my sternum is tender to the touch. It almost feels bruised.

I did a little bit of research and it seems that all of these problems are connected. The scalene muscle group can cause all of these problems. I am going to see a massage therapist on thursday. Hopefully I get some relief.

Another bit of info, I have a desk job. I am at a computer for 10 hours a day. I work 60 + hours a week. I had a chest CT scan with contrast in July and it came back clear. ( unrelated incident ) So I believe I can rule out anything major. The scan is only 3 months old.

My question is; has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do to ease your symptoms? I have tried muscle rub so far. Doesn't help much...I am going to ice the areas today and see if that helps.

Back :: Diaphragm Pain Which Leads Through To My Upper Back

I have a pain in between my diaphragm which leads through to my upper back, I have had for approximately 3 months but getting worse, if I lie on my stomach it hurts in both front and back. I have read all sorts of things that it might be from hernia to liver/kidney problem and gallstones... I did have a small incident where I strained myself trying to hold a motorbike up from falling down and I guess I have had the problem from then on, if I stretch out sometimes I will hear a click which radiates from the front to the back, if I push in my diaphragm it hurts. I live in a third world country so and worried about going to doctor.

Vomiting And Severe Back Pain - SI Joint?

I've been dealing with pain off and on in my low back wrapping around my hip bone on my left side. I have some burning in the back of my thigh and swelling of my leg.

This pain is excruciating when it comes on...sometimes it is manageable with meds and heat and other times I've landed in the ER with full on episodes of vomiting and pain off the charts.

I have had ovarian cysts and have been checked for those, negative. No kidney stones or masses showing in an abdominal CT. I did have SI Joint damage after an MVA years ago.

Is this possible this is SI joint pain? I was on long acting pain meds for years, only recently off them and that's when I've noticed an increase in pain. Perhaps the meds were masking the issue?

Abdominal Pain :: Upper Left With Back Pain Mainly At Nights

For the last 6 months I've been having quite localized pains in the upper left abdomen just below the ribs, accompanied by nausea and sometimes back pain mainly at nights. I sometimes have wind, but hardly ever heartburn. Two doctors have thought it a gastric problem, but Zantac and Omeprazole don't seem to work. I wondered whether it could be my pancreas, as I've been on Epilim Chrono for 4 years, which can affect pancreas. I've come off this now and am still getting problems, and my amylase is normal, although my liver function tests are elevated. One doctor thought it may be kidney stones and sent me for an ultrasound, which was normal. I was told though that the ultrasound couldn't see the pancreas properly, nor the stomach & bowel linings. I had a stool test for H Pylori which was negative. Any ideas on what this could be, or further tests I could do?

Pain While Stones Still In Kidney?

Is it possible to have kidney stone pain while the stones are still in the kidney? I have about seven stones in my right kidney and five in my left... I've had lower back pain for almost a month straight and nothing makes the pain go away. I'm trying to get my urologist to call me back, but that is next to impossible if I'm not in the emergency room doubled over in pain. Any suggestions/comments are welcome here

Pain After Kidney Stones And Stent

I had my first kidney stone in February of this year. I had lithotripsy twice on my right side and also a stent. The stent was removed after three days. I have had a constant stabbing pain where the stent once was. I have seen many different doctors and been to the ER several times. Each CT scan has come back negative for more stones and doctors cannot find a reason I am still in pain. Anyone have the same problem?

Postherpetic Neuralgia :: Sweating And Upper Back Pain - Shingles?

My 88 year old mother who has dementia has developed odd sensations and pain in her upper back.  She's had two bouts of extreme pain which moved around but were in a similar area of her back - lower ribs on left side.  The pain lasted only for a day each time and each time I saw what looked like sweat pimples but they were on her upper chest at the front - ie a different place.  Now she often feels cold and shivery (when in fact she is hot) and puts more layers on to the point where she starts sweating, feels pain in her upper back and gets very anxious when she gets it (most days in the afternoon/evening).  She gets night sweats.   Does this sound as if it could be left over from shingles?

Vitamin D3 Deficiency :: Muscle Pain (mostly Upper Back And Neck)

I've had some blood work done because I was extremely tired and have been for the last couple of months, muscle pain (mostly upper back and neck), headaches, muscle weakness, being emotional (bursting into tears) mostly because extremely tired. digestive issues etc.

Results came back, only thing wrong is D3 level at 6 ng/ml (minimum should be 30). I was prescribed 25000 UI a week for three months. I also sent a mail with the results to my endocrinologist. She says she doesn't think my symptoms come from a vitamin D deficiency. Now I respect the woman a LOT. She has helped me in many ways in the past and she's been the only one to find what was wrong with me years back when I had severe health issues and every other doctor thought I was just "depressed".

I am though very surprised by her answer. I've read of a lot of people having very similar symptoms with vitamin D deficiency, and for most of them the symptoms just flew away when their vitamin D level went back up.
