Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Small Screech When Turning Out Of Parking Space - Power Steering Tough

Aug 19, 2014

I have an 01 Hyundai Elantra that has had power steering problems for awhile.

Awhile back, when we would fire it up, we'd get a loud screech. Eventually, my father in law replaced the power steering pump and belt.

Now there is a new issue. Ever since he has replaced that, on start up, there's a small screech and when turning out of a parking space, the steering wheel is tough as if the power steering isn't working.

I was thinking it's the power steering pump pulley, but can't seem to find any real stores that just sell the pulley itself. I did see the pulley have a minor wobble in it when examining it. Thinking maybe its the bearings on the pulley.

Lexus LS 2007+ :: Knocking Sound When Turning Or Backing Out Of Parking Space

So I've noticed at times when I make a turn or when backing out of a parking space and cranking the wheel I hear a knocking sound. What it is? 2013 F Sport with 37K miles. Under warranty so taking it in either way but just curious on what it could be.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Dies When Turning To Left And Pull Into A Parking Space

I just had my EGR valve and hose and DPFE sensor replaced and the truck is running better than it has in quite a while except that whenever I turn to the left and pull into a parking space it dies.

I've read that it could be a bad power steering pump. This would make sense because mine is pretty noisy when I make a left or right turn. However, it has never caused the engine to stall before. This didn't begin happening until immediately after the recent maintenance.

Is there something I should be looking for that my be related to the new EGR valve/hose or DPFE sensor?

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Truck Freaked Out And Depowered Trying To Back Out Of Parking Space

Not really sure what happened. Drove into town on a nice casual drive after lunch to pick up some stuff at the hardware store we now have (we're big time now). About a 4 mile, uneventful trip. Went in, did my business, came out, turned the key on, bumped the key to the auto start thing, shifted to reverse, began backing out of space and the truck started beeping at me like I've never heard before.

Stop and keep my foot on the brake and the message center is just posting multiple messages and dinging each time a new one comes up. Had to hit the OK button on the steering wheel to clear many of them. Things like, low oil pressure, low coolant, powertrain malfunction, reduced power, shut down engine, the end of the world is near (I made the last one up).

Decided that it was either a catastrophic failure in 2' at 2 mph, or an electrical glitch, neither of which I could do much about. Decided best course of action was to shift to park, idle for a few seconds and turn the truck off.

Counted to 10, went to restart, and nothing. Like both batteries had been removed. No dash lights, nothing from the starter, nada. Turned off, counted off 30 seconds and more of the same. Repeat this time waiting one minute using the watch and again, nothing.

Pulled the key out, tossed it in my lap and waited 5 minutes while dreading having to call my son in law (who now is driving my old truck) to grab a trailer and come rescue me. Either 5 minutes or key out of ignition was the key because truck started up with no more warnings other than the SES light.

Vehicle health report said oil and stuff was good (dipstick said it was good too), but the end of the world was coming and I needed to get to a dealer right away due to the light.

Used forescan to pull the codes and nothing major jumps out at me, but the common theme seems to be the computer lost contact with all the electronic gizmos and it was apparently too much for the system to handle. I did not clear the codes (attached to the bottom of the thread).

Question now is, truck is less than a year old and has a bit over 33k on it. Do I clear the codes and chalk it up to a non-verifiable electrical gremlin, or take it in to a dealer for who knows how long to let them look at it before the 36k warranty goes?

If they reflash the computer, I'd have to add the nav again, but not sure a reflash would fix anything other than just giving them something they said they did.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Steering Stiff When Turning Left, Only Occasionally

My car has occasionally been exhibiting some stiffness when turning left, a harder turn and when going more slowly (like parking). It feels like a loss of power steering. There's no squeal and the fluid is full, although I don't know the last time it was changed. So far it hasn't happened when turning right.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Loud Noise When Turning The Steering Wheel

I'm having an issue with my 2004 Elantra.

When I turn the ignition in my car, it makes a very loud noise at the front of the car. This goes away after about 3 seconds, but when I turn the wheel to either side, it makes a very high screeching sound. This persists until I've been driving for a few minutes then it goes away.

I hesitate to say the following, but it also feels as if my steering wheel is a bit "harder" to turn, but maybe it is my imagination. What it could be? I checked power steering fluid and it is at normal levels.

Accent LC (2000-05) :: No Power Steering - Belt Screech During Cold Start

Awful belt noise that erupts during cold starts. I realize that this usually means a replaced belt. I want to know how to go along diagnosing which belt and then how to replace it. Here's the symptoms:

1. Awful belt screech when turned on, goes away within 20 seconds
2. Belt noise comes back when turning the wheel to back out of a right driveway
3. The STEERING WHEEL feels like it has no power steering WHILE the screeching is happening.
4. The headlights (when on) dim for about 3 seconds
5. All these symptoms happen when the temperature is below freezing and it's a cold start.

How is the belt screeching connected to the steering wheel being tough I turn?

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Intermittent Squeak / Screech In Steering Column While Driving

So I've begun to notice an annoying intermittent squeak/screech in my steering column while driving, obviously aggravated by the rough roads we've got down here. I can silence it tho, if I push in/up real hard on the steering wheel, so I'm pretty confident there's some bushing or bearing in the steering column that needs some lube or maybe just outright replacement.

Our V6 Touareg stalled while reversing out of a parking space last night. We have about 21,000 miles on it, and never had this problem before. I was able to fire up the engine again without any problem... by the way, can you tell if the battery is good or not from the battery meter in the instrument cluster?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Whine Noise Only When Turning Right - Power Steering Reservoir Leaks Fluid

I have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L with 85K miles. TB, WP and all belts changed at 75K. Have had this whine noise when I turn right, very high pitch noise. On top of this there is now Power Steering fluid leaking from the reservoir and base and brackets are full of fluid... Needless to say I assume it is the reservoir seals giving up but why the noise only when I turn right? No noise when I turn left.

What could it be? Also where can I find parts online that are cheaper than the stealership? I called them and they quoted me $72.00 for this piece of plastic!!

What else should I change? There is also some "oil/fluid" coming down a pressure hose but I believe this is due to the oil dripping from the reservoir...

Any manuals I could use to view this? I bought the Haynes manual and it's worthless!

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Power Steering Acting Up Like Belt Is Slipping

Well, two years after I replaced the pump bearing and the power steering is acting up like the belt is slipping. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes the steering gets jerky and hard.

The fluid level was fine, but I changed out the old stuff anyway, the belt is fine and not loose. I also pulled the pump apart to inspect it and it still looks as good as new.

When it acts up at a stop, it will squeal, but like I said, the belt is not loose. It's almost as if the rack is bottoming out against the bump stop (it's not) or the valve that lets excess pressure is dumping pressure randomly.

I took the valve apart with the pump and it looks fine, no scratches. Do the rack or valve go bad? If so, what was that like and could my rack have a seal leaking inside?

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Power Steering Fluid Leaked All Over Belts

A few days ago, my car developed a loud squeeling noise coming from the belts. I opened the hood to find both caked on and still wet PS fluid all over the left side of the engine compartment and the belts/pulleys. Most of the mess was concentrated near the PS fluid reservoir and the two hoses attached to it (picture of hoses and reservoir below from Google). This leads me to believe there is a leak in one, or both of these suction hoses. I will replace the hoses but my question is how should I clean up the fluid on the belts and pulleys? Should I use a soft brush and a rag with soapy warm water, brake cleaner and/or engine degreaser to get all the gunk off? I would really loathe having to have to put in new belts, seeing as that I just had all the belts changed 6 months ago. This squeeling noise makes my car sound like some old junky clunker and I hate it.

Nissan :: Steering Wheel Very Tough To Turn Right

Ok, it is a brand new car(Nissan)and when on the highway and turning(road curving right) the steering wheel is very tight/tough/resists to turn right and it pushes back to the left. When turning left it is nice and easy. What is crazy is this happened to my fiancee's last lease and(after 4 service visits) they rotated the tires or and it went away but the only bad thing was when it was time to rotate the tires it came back. The car was a different model Nissan. My question is was could make a BRAND NEW car do this? We checked tire pressure and it is fine and I also had two other family members drive it and they felt it right away.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Power Steering Squeal When Turned The Wheel To Full Lock

I have an 02 Elantra GT. I was dropping off a friend who knows cars and went to turn around, turned the wheel to full lock to make the turn and heard a squeal. I asked my friend what it was and he said it was the P/S and I just needed to add some P/S fluid. I got some fluid and sure enough when I went to fill up the reservoir it was below to MIN line, not too much below but still below it. I filled up the fluid and didn't hear the problem for the rest of the day but this morning I heard the same noise when I was leaving for work. I figured the fluid had to work its way though but am not sure if there is something else I should check or do.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Power Steering Leak / Fluid Below Passenger Side Of Rack

My power steering seems to have sprung a leak. There is quite a bit of fluid below the passenger side of the steering rack. The leak seems to be right below where the power steering hose comes down off the pump, gets secured to the chassis and changes to metal line from rubber. The metal line then goes into an L bend and is routed towards the driver side right where the leak apparently is.

I haven't had a chance to have a good look, as it was 10:30 at night when I parked it and looked (12km of careful city driving since it started to act up)
Is this a high pressure or return line?

The leak seems to be forward of the steering rack, so hopefully I wont have to replace it.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 - Loose Power Steering When Step On Brakes And Turning The Wheel

Starting about a year ago, "sometimes" when I step on the brakes and am turning the steering wheel, I loose the power steering. I took it to Ford and they said that this is a a known issue but they didn't say what it would take to fix it. Because this problem is intermittent it is very hard to get this fixed unless the mechanic can experience and verify the problem for himself...

Camry :: 2010 LE Power Steering Fluid Overflow - Steering Very Tight At Low / Parking Speeds

2010 camry LE

A family member did a tune up on the car and did not realize that the power steering reservoir had a HOT and COLD min/max lines. He filled up to the max line for HOT while the car was completely cold. He also filled up with Prestone Power Steering fluid with Stop Leak instead of ATF/DEXIII.

The car was driven a few times for maybe 50 miles in total before I found out about all this and I drained the fluid out to the appropriate levels. However the steering at low/parking speeds is still very tight (tighter than what I used to remember, at least).

Did he royally screw up the power steering system here? What can I do?
