Ford Excursion :: 2000 V10 - Front Differential (Inner Seal) Leak

May 6, 2013

2000 Excursion, Limited, 4X4, 6.8L, V10. My right front inner differential seal is leaking. I have researched and found out that I have to remove the pumpkin gear assembly from the front differential to get at the seal.

Do I need any special tools to get the seals seated back into the differential? Any instructions or a list of parts needed?

I went to fordparts.com and entered my vin number but it makes no reference to the parts of the front differential only the rear.

Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: Rear Differential Leak From Pinion Seal

New issue this week - truck developed a leak from the pinion seal. I'm not sure how much has leaked out, so I would like to top it off before limping to the dealership.

From the manual: "Motorcraft SAE 75W-140 Rear Synthetic Axle Lubricant" There is also a footnote for friction modifier required for a Trans-Loc rear diff. Assuming that footnote refers to an LSD and NOT the E-Locker, should be able to top off with just the fluid, correct?

I am a die hard for Truck fan but am really disappointed with the overall quality of the truck. I bought it new and now with 30k, I've had it in twice to have rotors turned, once for transmission getting stuck in 5th and needed a new molded leadframe assembly, and now the pinion leak. All fixed under warranty, however really unacceptable for a truck with this low of miles and an easy life.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Leak On Front Differential Passenger Side

My 7.3 has a leak on the front diff passenger side. It went into a shop for repair and they did both seal but the passenger side came out with a worse leak than it went in with. So just looked this morning and small pool of oil under the ujoint area on the concrete. Its booked in again to be fixed under warranty repair (place that fixed it, repair came with 2yr warranty) on Wednesday next week - was the earliest I could get.

Question - can i keep driving the truck? I'm making a wild assumption that I can unless I use 4 wheel drive. My intention was to just keep topping up the diff to ensure there is fluid in it. It's the work truck so wouldn't be good to be without....

Phaeton :: Oil Leak From Front Differential

Last night just before parking my Phaeton in my garage I've took a look and saw a small amount of oil on the floor. It was light and judging by the oil location and color it could be from the front differential. I had this on my A8 , it wasn't difficult to fix, my mechanic changed the main seal. As far as I know the A8 quattro system is the same on the Phaeton, so, should I assume that it can also easily be fixed.

Ford Excursion :: 2004 - Front Axle Inner Seal Replacement

I have an 04 Limited, 6.0 PSD, 4x4 which I need to replace the front inner axle seals, the right side is leaking out the shaft. I have watched a couple of YouTube videos on how it is done but would like to get some first hand knowledge and recommendations.

First, how important is it to check the backlash before beginning the removal of the gear assembly? Do I need to remove the pinion gear as well or just the gear assembly?

How difficult is it to get everything back on place once the seals are replaced? I have not done this type of repair before and am concerned I might miss something.

I am planning to replace all the ball joints at this time also, this was the primary reason for this maintenance in the first place.

Ford Excursion :: Left Front Spring Shackle Interfering With Differential Cover?

I recently installed front and rear Mag-Hytek diff covers and the front had a small leak. I thought I had gouged the housing during removal of the factory cover, so I set aside time to remove the Mag-Hytek and repair the housing. I just removed the new cover and upon inspection, there is no gouge. There is a slight scratch, but not in the area of the leak.

Upon further inspection it appears as though the o-ring wasn't properly sealing. There is a slight rust coloring where the o-ring was seated against the housing, running from where the left lower spring shackle touches the diff housing, to the bottom of the housing. The rest of the o-ring route looks clear (no rusty coloring where the o-ring was seated).

Is it possible that the spring shackle is too close to the diff, causing the new cover to not be able to seal properly? (The truck had a lift on it when I bought it. When I installed the Bilsteins, I noted that the old shocks were installed very "amateurish", so I suppose it's possible the springs were as well.)

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2000 F250 - Rear Hub Seal Leak?

I have a 2000 F250 4x4 7.3 - About a month ago I drove across town and then noticed a strong hot brake smell from the rear of the truck. When I drove home about 2 hours later it was gone and didn't return until today. Today I stopped at a light with my window down and got the same hot brake smell, looked in the mirror and saw smoke coming from my drive's side rear wheel.

I carefully drove home (the smoke was now gone, all i did was cycle the parking brake release a couple of times) and pulled the wheel off. Rotor was really hot but smooth and clean. Brake caliper and pads looked great (no sign of the pads glazing or dragging, dry as a bone). The inside of the rotor was wet with oil. The brake shoes and components were soaked with the same fluid/oil.

Does this sound like a typical hub seal issue? Excuse my ignorance since I haven't had the rear hubs apart before but does the gear oil in the rear diff go into the axle tubes? I know the front tubes are dry but I didn't know if the rears are different. The amount of fluid on the brakes seems to be more than the little bit that is inside the hub. I need to pick up the parts and rent/purchase a couple of tools to replace the seal so I want to be as sure as possible that I'm on the right track...

Ford Excursion :: Transfer Case Input / Front Seal Replacement

Noticed some fluid on the bottom of the Ex a few months ago and have been watching it since. Drained and refilled with the XL-12 fluid at the time and based on what I can see the likely culprit is the input seal on the transfer case. I have searched high and low both here and via the almighty google with little info to be found. Is it simply remove transfer case, replace input seal, reseal case connection, and refill?

Ford Excursion :: Faint Odor Of Differential Fluid From Driver Side Front And Rear Wheels

I've only had the Ex for a few months so I'm still learning... After a trip to Orlando this weekend, I noticed a very faint odor of differential fluid from the driver's side front and rear wheels.

Nothing on the passenger's side. I've inspected the pinions and axles and found no wet areas at all, so I'm a little perplexed. The wheels and axle housings were pretty cool considering a 5 hour round trip.

I was also wondering if what I am smelling is due to the axle vent hoses?

Ford Excursion :: Small Puddle Under Passenger Side Tire / Wheel Area - Front Seal Leaking

So this morning is just getting better and better. Was coming back in from getting the mail and noticed a small puddle under the passenger side tire/wheel area.

I never ever have a puddle of any sort in my drive way so...I start crawling around the truck and this is what I find. I can free spin the dust seal, but its all the fluid that has be worried. With less then 4 days till I have to haul everyone to the airport this is not what I need.

IF (man I feel stupid for asking) IF I leave it in 2 wheel drive how big of an issue would it be to drive it?

None of the parts will be in before I have to drive everyone out to the airport, this is the only reason I'm even considering this..

Plus would this explain a sudden lost of MPG?

Dodge - Neon :: 1997 - Replaceable Seal On The Front Engine Causing Leak?

My dad has a 97 Dodge Neon 4 cylinder. The car has been leaking oil, and on Sat the leak grew and was real bad. He took it to the only shop he could find open who put it up on the lift and said the leak was coming from the front of the engine. On monday they did the work ($286) and told my dad it was a seal on the front of the engine behind the flywheel. My dad is old and doesn't hear well and the mechanics english was not real strong and his writing on the recepit is not real clear. As I am worried my dad might have gotten taken, is there a replaceable seal on the front of the engine that could go and cause a leak? They showed my dad the leak as the car was on the lift and running as that was only when the leak occured. I am concerned my dad was taken. He says he drove it around and such and didn't see any leaking when he picked it up and left it running in his drivway for a while upon getting home and no leak. Just wondering?
