I hear a metal on metal scraping/screeching sound with the windows down and only when i drive by guard rails and other stuff sound reflects off of. I saw the traveling hub zerk thread and that's what made me think of it. I've zerked every fitting I've seen, but this ones new to me. Problem is I can't even tell witch wheel (if any) it's coming from. It's consistent with speed.
View 12 RepliesI picked my R up three weeks ago tomorrow. I took it in this morning because there has been brake noise from day one. The noise was a scraping, metal on metal sound that diminished a fair amount when the brakes were warm. I only got a very brief conversation with the service agent at the dealership this afternoon, and all he told me is that they had to order in new brakes. I don't know if it's just pads, or calipers or rotors or the whole deal! I'll get the whole scoop tomorrow.
View 5 RepliesMy wife drives a 2010 Honda Odyssey. Yesterday she told me that last week it started making occasional sounds like metal scraping. I heard it today and it sounds like a chain dragging, or something going on in the wheel. The sound lasts for less than a minute, and is then gone. The sound changes pitch/frequency with speed. It only happens with the car in motion, and only after it's been driving for awhile. It sounds like it's coming from one of the left side wheels.
There are only 36,000 miles on the car. We live in Northern California where the climate is mild and there's never salt on the road. I'm wondering if this model has problems with wheel bearings, or something else.
Yesterday, I was dropping off a friend, and after a minute or so of being parked, when I started rolling forward again, this very loud, metal on metal screeching sound started coming from under my car, seemingly on the driver's side. I thought there was maybe something under the car, but I looked, and found nothing. When I tried to leave her street the noise got so loud I was scared and stopped again, and her neighbors came out because they heard it. Again, examination of the wheels, undercarriage, under the hood, it all looked normal. Turning the steering wheel didn't make the noise, but bouncing the hood made a slight squeak in the same area. So I parked it, and this morning had it towed to my mechanics. Of course, once it got there, they said it drove fine, they hear no noise, and saw nothing wrong with the brakes, tires, or axles. Basically, they think I'm crazy.It was lightly misting when this happened but not real rain or anything. The mechanic said they don't see any evidence that anything was stuck in there that might've gotten dislodged by the tow. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow, but is there anything I should have them check before that?
View 6 RepliesFor the past few months, pretty consistently, whenever I engage the clutch from full stop into first gear (it does it when starting in second gear too; and reverse) there is a pretty obnoxious and loud screeching noise that I would liken to a subway/train braking or just metal on metal grinding situation. When I took the car in to Douglas for an oil change and APR Stg 1 flash, they told me it's just the brakes being cold, etc. After driving the car some more, I really doubt that it's the brakes and I can reproduce this regularly by slowly releasing the clutch and get the noise usually just before the gear engages.
That car has just over 16K on the clock and has never been abused. The clutch pedal feels fine and there is no issue shifting into any of the gears other than the noise. No mods other than the APR Stage 1.
The brakes were sounding like metal on metal. Three wheels in, some of the pads needed replaced but none were worn out. I got to the right rear wheel and the inside pad is worn to the bracket but the outside pad hardly looks worn at all.
I'm already replacing rotors, pads and calipers (I wasn't going to replace the rear rotors or calipers until I got to this wheel). Is there anything else I need to check because of such uneven pad wear?
I thought i heard this yesterday when i left work but i was tired and said its in my head, THEN i go to leave right now and sure enough its a real sound, you can hear it very well through the front grill and then if you turn the volume up you can hear a ticking sound ever half a second or so, it also speeds up when i was pulling on the throttle cable. And after the truck fully warms up it goes away.......

I have removed the steering wheel, replaced the clockspring, because when I removed wheel clockspring was in pieces and I thought that might be the issue. Guess not, because I'm still having problem. Other than having to remove or replace the whole steering column...
View 2 RepliesI have a 2000 Toyota Solara with 145,000 miles. When I make a right turn, there is a scraping sound like metal against metal. Its not loud or shrieking. Its hard to hear over talk radio. But in the garage I can hear it, and its been getting louder. I haven't changed or replaced the tires in awhile or had any other work done to the right tire since long before the noise started. Is this something serious that requires immediate attention or is it some loose piece of plastic?
View 2 RepliesMy 2012 Plug-in spontaneously started making a metal scraping/rattling noise in the middle of a low-speed drive around the neighborhood yesterday. Seems to be coming from the left front wheel area. I've checked thoroughly under the car and in the front wheel wells for anything that could be dragging/rubbing, and I can't find a culprit there.
It occurs while coasting in EV mode, so not ICE/exhaust related. The car doesn't pull to one side or the other. Only 9K miles, so I wouldn't suspect a hub bearing or any other significant wear to be causing this.
Possible clue or red herring: the dealer replaced the the left front tire and did an alignment two days ago, and the noise occurred within 15 miles of driving after that service.
When driving at slow speeds and when I go over a bump in the road, I'll hear something like the metal part of the wheel scraping something as its turning. Only comes from the front drivers side wheel. It's audible enough that people usually turn to look when I'm in a parking lot.
Took it to the dealer, they 'test drove' it. Said they couldn't hear anything. Then said that whatever I'm hearing is 'normal suspension noise'. So after leaving it a full day at the dealer, nothing has changed. Since when is ANY suspension noise normal? But I don't think its the suspension. What to do? Take it back? Take it to another dealer?
Background: 2003 jetta; just changed rotors and pads on rear wheels a month ago, they are disc brakes
So the other day I was driving in a school zone at about 20 mph when I heard a VERY loud sound, like I'm dragging metal. i might also describe it as two rusty metal plates being rubbed against each other, but really really loud.
The noise is related to speed, it sounds cyclical and speeds up as the wheel turns faster. It occurs when I am NOT braking.
I parked the car and came back to it a few days later move it and the sound disappeared for the first 100 feet and then came back.
We did 2 things - we changed the caliper, and we also noticed that a caliper bolt was missing. I am pretty sure the noise was coming from that missing bolt - i think the caliper became dislodged and was making contact with the rotor. The caliper also seemed to be dragging a little bit so we went ahead and changed it too.
So...I just took my car in last week to replace the TPS and noticed that the car is now making a weird sound when I reverse (out of parking spaces, etc). The sounds seems to be coming from the rear of the car the sound is similar to metal scraping concrete and happens intermittently. I'm wondering if this is a random coincidence or if this could be related to the recent work done on the TPS. If my brakes hadn't been completely replaced a year ago, I'd suspect it might be those. What could cause this sound?
View 5 RepliesI have a 2007 hyundai sonata, this car is my daily driver. I put 180 miles on it a day around trip. Currently has 180,200 miles on it. Last Friday on my trip home when i turned right I heard a metal on metal sound. I slowed down went straight and it went away. Talked to a few people and I think it may be the wheel bearing. Even if I hit a road reflector it starts up. It's the front left wheel. Get on the breaks it goes away.
So my question is... Wheel bearing??? And can I replace the whole hub and fix the problem or do I have to try and press the bearing out?
I have a 2003 Toyota Solara 4 cyl. auto. transmission. I recently had the head replaced. Now it is making a metal on metal sound near the drivers side of the engine. It makes the sound during idle, when I change gears, and the sound increases when I rev the engine. What could it be?
View 8 RepliesMy 2011 2.4l Sonata made a metal on metal sound suddenly the other day. About 4 days ago, I drove about 2 hours away from where I live, Mostly highway, about 80mph to a go kart race. Got out of the car for a while and came back in and was pulling away to run the store and as i started to approach the first stop sign maybe 500-600 ft from where i was parked, i heard a bad metal on metal sound, came to a complete stop at the sign and it stopped. Went back to the race after driving to the store about 5 miles away.
Got in the car to leave and same thing, just to the stop sign 500-600ft away. Drove home like i said mostly highway, and didn't hear a thing. Today, about 4 days later, I drove to Chicago O'hare airport, about 30min away, and it was fine the whole way there. However on the way back, after about 20-25min, I heard it again. So I came to complete stop as I was forced to by a traffic light as I was taking my exit off the highway, and It started making that sound again. So i came to a complete stop at the light and started moving again when it turned green and couldn't heard a thing.
At 75K my passenger side rear brakes were making metal on metal sound. I was really surprised as I have always learned that the front brakes take 80% of load and they always go out before the backs. So I took the wheel off and sure enough the pads were metal on metal. Changed everything out. (new rotors). I then went over to the driver side rear brake. Looks brand new. The pistons were barely out. I figured this caliper is bad. (I haven't change yet)
When I drive I can hear a very faint metal on metal sound when I brake. VERY FAINT. So with 75K miles on I figure the front brakes are due. Today I took the wheels off and inspected them. Tons of pad left on both of them. If I didn't know better I would say a brake job had been done very recently. (I've owned the car new so I know they have not had a brake job) However after reading many articles on this site I found a thread where one user said he was changing his front brakes for the first time with 110K on them and the pads still had 10K left in them. So the fact that my front pads are still pristine at 75K may not be a big deal (or not as big as I thought. Also I am not hard on brakes.)
However I'm not sure what is going on. Why would the passenger rear brake be metal on metal at 75K and the three other pads are like new. Is the passenger rear the only one working (or working much harder than the others) meaning the other three are bad? Or is the rear passenger bad and the other three are good? I have a working knowledge of cars but I am by no means a mechanic.
I have got this noise which sounds like a light skimming of metal on metal. It sounds like a roller (airport baggage) spinning. It can be heard mostly when driving next to a wall or past parked cars. I suspect it being the bearing in either the water pump, idler pulley or even alternator. The car has 330000 kms but it is serviced regularly in which all fluids have been changed over time. I just want to drive through a tunnel and not hear any non harmonic sounds coming from the front.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2011 Santa Fe AWD Limited. 90,000 miles. I have a strange sound I need identifying. At first I thought the sound was my AC depressurizing, but it's not that. It sounds similar, but has a faint metal-on-metal jingle sound to it, like something is rubbing or something is rotating and intermittently hitting something just slightly. The mechanic went in to change the water pump because it was leaking, and he thought that the water pump when rotating was rubbing because the rubber ring/gasket was failing, therefore making that sound. Not it. Tired rotated and new brake pads put on. Still there. To be clear, the mechanic never said he heard the sound. I just told him about it.
I can hear the sound when I turn the car on and put it in reverse start backing up. I can hear it when I let off the brake (driving and in park), which lead me to believe that it could have been the pressure in the Master Cylinder or ABS. I don't know now because it does it intermittently when I am driving down the road with no brake applied. When I park, I put the car in Park, get off the brake and just listen. And I can hear it. When it is in park it is more rhythmic, with two or three second breaks in between. kshhh kshhh kshhh kshhh. (I hope you like my poor attempts at sound effects.)
Is it the ABS system? Don't tell me it's transmission related. I just bought this car (used at 87,000 miles) and already had the struts done, the water pump and drive belt done. For what it's worth, this car's passenger and back seats vibrate at 60+. Not sure if that has anything to do with this sound, but thought I would mention it. New struts and tire rotation did nothing.
I own a 2010 Toyota Prius that recently developed a metal-on-metal whining scraping sound when moving. It does not make sound when the vehicle is stationary, and it's intermittent - which makes me discount the rock-in-disc-rotor idea (not eliminate it, mind you). It's quite loud when it occurs, able to hear it over the stereo. Luckily I was near work at the time, so I went there - but the shop can't even look at it until Monday evening - so I am a bit panicked.
