I'm wanting to change my trans fluid and filter on my 2002 explorer xlt. it's starting to hesitate when initally going into gear. it doesn't have the dip stick and the new fluid has to be pumped in through some plugged opening in the side of the trans. what tool do i need to pump the fluid in and what is the procedure for getting the correct fluid level installed.

After coming to a stop a taking off again, long hesitation, slams into 3rd gear, check transmission warning came on and OD light on dash was blinking. I drive it home and pull the code: P0745. I drop the pan and find a piece of metal 1/4 wide x 1/2 long. Does this mean a complete trans rebuild?
View 5 RepliesI have an '02 GTI VR6. It died on me on the freeway after surging then limping to a stop and wouldn't restart. I replaced my fuel pump 5 months ago and now I suspect that it has died again, but I want to be absolutely sure that the pump is the problem before I replace it again.
Last time the car would sometimes hesitate in 1st and 2nd for a couple weeks before the pump actually went bad. This time it seemed fine for 5 months then just went out.
The pump does not prime when I open the door. I checked fuse #28 and it's not blown, but there doesn't seem to be any power to it. I tested the power to the fuel pump connector. When I turn the key on I get ~12v for a split second then nothing. While cranking the engine I get ~9v constantly. I hooked a square 9v battery straight to the two outside connectors on the pump and nothing happened.
Can I be sure that the pump is the only problem? Obviously it's dead, but is there any reason for fuse 28 to not be getting power? And should the connector only be getting power for a split second when the ignition is turned on? I tried a different fuel pump relay with no change.
2003 Explorer Sport Trac... The air bag light initially flashes once, pause, twice, longer pause, repeat. I think that is LFC (light flash code) 12. What it means and a possible solution?
View 2 RepliesOur 2002 Explorer E.B., V6 4wd 153,000 miles, when cold only in winter months the transmission is slow to go into gear, forward or reverse, takes 10 or 15 seconds to catch into gear. If you warm the car up for 5 minutes or so it is ok no problem. In warm weather it does not do this. Transmission shifts normally and runs great other than this. I changed tranny fluid and filter with Mercon V about 12 months ago. Could it be the solenoid pack or something else.
View 3 RepliesReplaced the 2002 ford explorer 4x4 traction control module because of a shudder in first gear. With the new module the shudder disappeared but now the truck shifts into 4wd by itself and stays there. I am now on my 2nd new module because I returned the first one thinking it was defective.
If I cycle the 4x4 high switch and the 4x4 auto switch, the truck switches back int 2wd but on for a moment then goes back into 4wd. I don't get a 4x4high indicator light but I can hear and feel it is in 4wd. Almost like it thinks the truck needs work with the traction. I have now disconnected the module completely and the trucks runs/shifts beautifully in 2wd. I know my transmission is good. BTW, I have no trouble codes.
Do I have a bad speed sensor somewhere? and How do I trouble shoot for it?
It's a 2002 explorer, 4.0, 5R55W trans, all was fine then O/D light starts flashing, so I limp it home. Trans isn't slipping, every gear works, it does kinda bang into 4th but is otherwise normal. Took it to auto zone to have the code read, but no codes found. Disconnected battery to see if it just needed a reset maybe, let it sit for a few hours, reconnect, OD light still flashes. Borrow a different OBD2 tester, still shows no codes, still drives the same just bangs into 4th. I've read up on the solenoid pack replacement, just kind hesitant as I feel like I'm guessing at the problem and might be throwing money away.
View 2 RepliesMy 4.65L V8 Explorer has an issue in low gear - RPMS rev high but car doesn't shift up.. eventually "catches" with a jerk but the OD Light started flashing and the Systems Screen reads Check Transmission. Light goes out and message goes away after turning car off and restarting. Had one Tech look at it - he said second gear is toast and need full transmission rebuild. Another Ford Tech looked and could just be solenoid needing replacement and advised to have a transmission service (not a flush) done....

If there belt tensioner wobbles like this on a 2azfe? There is a noise as you initially press the accelerator but then disappears. You can hear it in the video. I know there is a tsb on the tensioner but the belt doesn't look like its loosening off.
I have a 2002 f150 with the 5.4. Its got a rough idle and a bit hesitant on acceleration. Im wanting to replace the coils and plugs but what brand of coils should I use?

It is a beautiful car and I love all the new technology but I am concerned about the transmission gear change between 2nd and 3rd. The car hesitates and vibrates when shifting between second and third gear then levels out. It a little slow and scary pulling out in traffic without just punching it. This is my first LX and just found out that the LX transmission went from 6 speed to 8 on the 2016 model. I called the dealership and they said the car is very new and they have not gotten any reports from Lexus about the transmission hesitating. Taking it in next week for service and have it checked out.
View 14 RepliesBought a 2007 es350 2 months ago and transmission shifted fine during test drives but now seems to hesitate when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear when not warmed up. Also seems to not engage at low speeds of around 5mph again when cold. Seems to shift normally when warmed up or after the the first couple shifts of the morning. Is it a simple fix or a prelude of something worse to come? Other than that I love the car so far.

When I turn the key initially it will do nothing sometimes, take a second to start sometimes, and start almost normally sometimes. It seems to be at it's worse when I leave it for longer periods, such as after work or overnight. What happens most is that I turn the key and nothing happens for a moment, then it starts to turn over, and after a few seconds of struggling to start it turns over. It hasn't gotten worse yet, but i'd like to hear from the more knowledgeable before I go to a mechanic.

When I turn the key to on, I hear the vacuum pump cycle (passenger side fender), but don't hear the glow plugs or injectors cycle. Glow plug light comes on and stays on for 30secs. Wrench light comes on initially, but goes off after 3 secs, but then comes back on after about 8-10 seconds. When the wrench light comes on, I hear a click under the dash and my cab lights go off.
When I turn the key to start, nothing happens. If I jump the starter, engine turns over, but doesn't start. I have check numerous fuses, disconnected the fan clutch, tried moving the shifting lever to neutral, wiggled wires around the FICM/PCM/GPCM with no success.
I tried checking for DTC codes, but my scanner (300 reader) doesn't get any power. I have checked my light, it has power.
Twice before, the truck failed to start like this, but after removing & inspecting fuses/relays (all were good), it started back up. Also, occasionally the truck would stall, (just like someone turned the key off), but would start right backup. But when it stalled, the glow plug light would illuminate for a second,then go off.
Own truck for 8 months, replaced the batteries & injectors 6 months ago. Very light puff of smoke when starting up otherwise ran well when shut off.
How to proceed? My first diesel so I may need some extra details.
1999 Explorer starts then will not idle unless it is put into gear. It only happens once in a while...

View 1 RepliesI have a '02 Excursion with a 7.3L PSD, 238,000 miles. When I drive and say stop at a stop sign or light, when I transfer from the brake pedal to the accelorator and initially begin moving, I hear a slight "Thump" in the back. Could it be a sticky rear brake caliper? Bad U-joint? Sloppy ring/pinion gear? Just put AMS oil in the rear diff but have noticed slight shavings on the fill plug magnet.

I use to be able to jump in and take off but here lately i have to let the truck idl for a few sec or up to a min before i can take off (warm or cold). This just started a month ago...
The trans fluid smells burned and it has be 2yrs since iv changed fluid and filter in the tran...Everything other then that iv kept up to par. What do you think should i start looking for something new or just change filter and fluid????
I know the truck has had a good life so I am starting to think the tran maybe trying to go.... My friend has a 85 dodge ram charger suv not sure the miles but its auto as well....It has a 318. Other then a small dent the thing look good... It has some kinda vacuum leak major but doesn't effect running. He told me the leak is from something he had removed when we left CA that they said he had to have for smog?
I have a 2004 Explorer 4.0 4x4 with 130,000 miles. The vehicle will not move while in 2 WD or in 4H. No engagement at all. However it will engage in 4L (reverse and drive). It also makes no sound from transfer case when I try to shift from auto 4x4 to 4H. 4L engages and is a bitch to get out of 4L once it's engaged. Changed tranny fluid and filter with no change. Really need this truck fixed, and by me if at all possible.
View 3 RepliesMy wifes 04 explorer 4.0 4x4 slips in between second and third gear and you cannot manually shift the gearshift below 3rd gear. I assumed tranny was going out but was told that it could be the transmission control solenoid or the transmission control switch (i think they are the same thing). I read that the most common symptom of this going bad is a slip between second and third gear. Haven't checked codes but will when i get home to see what it comes up with. This is the messed up model where you have to add fluid underneath through the drain plug. Was going to change fluid and add lucas to it to see if it remedies the problem.
View 1 RepliesA friend of mine at work has a 93 4wd explorer. A4ld transmission. Reverse quit working, and no matter what gear you put it in, reverse, neutral, or park, it will stay in drive. Park holds itself, but if you give it gas, it tries to pull. He says when it's in reverse, it's almost like it's stuck in reverse and forward, it wants to rock. He pulled the pan, no metal shavings, and pulled the valve body. He said the screws holding the valve body were finger tight. The gasket underneath had a small tear in it, he doesn't know if he did this pulling it out or not. He replaced those gaskets and retorqued the valve body. When he put it in reverse and topped off fluid, reverse worked. He put it in drive and it worked, but when he put it back in reverse, it stayed in drive and is staying in drive in all gear selections again. He bought this explorer new, and the transmission had never been into before.
