Ford Transmission :: Grinding Noise Coming From The Transmission

Jun 25, 2012

I swapped a t5 transmission from a s-10 into my 52 ford f3. I am trying to rundown a grinding noise coming from the transmission. I replaced the throw out bearing and the input shaft bearing on the transmission. With the transmission partially apart I couldn't find any obvious problems. The noise is only present when the clutch is depressed either in gear out out of gear.

Left in neutral there isn't any noise. I initially thought the throw out bearing was the culprit and replaced both that and the input shaft bearing. What could be wearing out? The transmission shifts perfectly but there is a binding noise when the clutch is released in first and sometimes second gear. another binding noise is present when making a hard left turn while starting out. I am at a loss here....

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Grinding Noise Coming From The Area Where Transmission And Motor Meet?

I have a 97 250 LD 5.4 that suddenly has a grinding noise coming from the area where the transmission and motor meet. I took the inspection plate off the transmission and can look up inside there and see everything moving. I use a screw driver and if I flex the plate that mounts between the transmission and the motor I am able to get the noise to quiet down until I release the screwdriver and then the plate flexes back and scrapes making the noise again.

I can not see where the plate is grinding when I look up inside there. I can't figure out how to fix this.... Why it would just start doing this on its own as none of the bolts on the housing have been removed except for the two bolts that hold the starter on. (Changed it a couple of weeks ago). Thought about loosening the bolts on the tranny housing but I'm afraid that it would open me up to further problems???

Dodge - Caliber :: Grinding Noise Coming From Manual Transmission In 3rd

I have a 2007 Dodge Caliber manual transmission. When I shift the car (while driving) from 2nd into 3rd/4th/5th gear, I suddenly notice what sounds like a "grinding" noise that stays with the car while in those gears. It's clearly an abnormal noise and noticeable but not obnoxious. It does not occur in 1st or 2nd (although it seems that maybe at higher rpms in 2nd gear I begin to notice it coming, though maybe it's my imagination), but the second I shift to 3rd gear and give it gas, the noise shows up instantly. Now when I let my foot off the gas, the noise goes away 100%. The second I give it gas again, it comes back. Also I don't believe the noise increases or decreases in relation to the speed of the vehicle. It seems to stay constant no matter what speed I'm at, as long as I'm actively giving it gas.

It occurs every time I drive, but I don't notice any other weird noises or problems with the car and the clutch feels good. I haven't been able to find any leaking anywhere underneath the car. It has approx. 92,000 miles and is a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder. I've spoken with a few folks and I've been given the following ideas:

1) bad clutch/assembly (replace clutch kit)
2) bad throwout bearing
3) bad bearing inside transmission associated with 3rd,4th,5th gear rod (?)
4) low transmission oil, 3-5 gears not oiled enough and causing noise
5) maybe nothing to do with transmission at all?

I plan on taking the transmission apart this week with a mechanically-inclined friend of mine and if I have a good idea of what it could be, that may save us a lot of time by not having to take unnecessary things apart (ie. tranny vs bellhousing).

Ford Transmission :: Grinding Noise Then Shift Into Gear?

I have a f1ta 5 speed trans on my 4.9 and when i press the clutch in and shift into 1st gear it makes a grinding noise then goes into gear after a little patience. but if i press the clutch and wait a few seconds, then shift into 1st its fine and goes right in.... maybe syncronizers not meshing or they're worn? or could it possibly be a low fluid prob? idk, it just started happening.

Ford Transmission :: Loud Grinding Noise When Put Truck In Reverse

Chasing down a grinding noise. I have done a lot of research but nothing quit matches up with what I am hearing.

I have a 1979 F250 4x4. A few days ago I put the truck in reverse and as I was backing up it was like the drivetrain locked up. After that I put the truck in gear and started on my way. As I got up in speed a pretty loud grinding noise was coming from the tranny. 2nd and 3rd gear aren't bad but when I get up to 40+mph it sounds like crap. If I push in the clutch the grinding is still there. While driving I also put the transfer case in neutral, kept the tranny in gear, pushed in the clutch and the grinding stopped.

I also took the lid off, inspected the forks and thoroughly cleaned the inside but noise still continues.

Ford Transmission :: Extreme Grinding Noise In Neutral And Park

My Dad has a 01 f150 xtended cab 5.4 auto. Some of this info is second hand. He had driven it on a trip about 50 miles, when he started it to return he said it did not want to engage, put it in gear and nothing happened. Messed with it a bit and got it to go. was fine for about 30 miles or so. Then it started to make noise. I trailered it home and drove it a couple hundred yards to the shop. It sounds like a very large, very dry bearing, also seemed to catch/lock up then clunk.

With the wheels off the ground you can kick it into neutral and while the wheels are still rolling it quiets down. Also it does it sometimes while in neutral. When it is in park it sounds like stuff is still turning. At fist I thought wheel bearing or rear end until it made noise in neutral and park. The noise in park is not loud, just sounds like things are turning. It is full of fluid. The tranny has always worked flawlessly and still does even with the noise. Where to start looking? Transfer case?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2010 - Grinding Noise From Manual Transmission

A friend has a 2010 ranger with the 2.3L with the manual transmission. He said that when he drives and the rpms are up he said he gets a grinding noise it doesn't matter what gear 1rst or 5th. He think throw out bearing but no noises at all until the rpms are up there. I was think internal like shift fork but don't know.

Ford Transmission :: 1994 - Barely Engage - Grinding Noise In Park And Neutral?

I have a 1994 F-150 extended cab electronically activated 4x4, with the 302 V8 and an e4od transmission.

When the truck is running and it is in park or neutral it makes a grinding/whining noise and when it is in gear it doesn't engage, or occasionally will barely engage, but only enough to move it a little ways.

I've read a couple of post that suggested bad connections to the transmission could cause the transfer case to be in neutral which could cause a similar problem to this. I checked all the connection the best I could and the only thing I found that gave me any concern was one of the wires connected to the transfer case shift motor had some of the insulation melted or rubbed of and the wire was a bit corroded.

Is there any chance that this could be causing my overall problem with the truck not driving? Or what might be going on with it? Or any way I might be able to fix it without having to hand over a significant chunk of change for the full rebuild.

Ford Transmission :: 1989 F350 - Harder To Shift / Grinding Noise Like It Doesn't Want To Go In Gear

I have a 1989 F-350 7.3 IDI with a ZF-5 trans. Lately, I noticed that it was a little harder to shift my truck through gears while driving than it normally is, and when I'm stopped and try shifting into first gear or something it like vibrates and makes like a grinding noise like it doesn't want to go in gear. For a while, I've also had to push on the clutch very hard in order for it to I guess hit the linkage and start, but I never had problems shifting until lately.

Today though, I went to start my truck, I pushed on the clutch as hard as I could, and the switch would not engage so I couldn't start it. So, I guess the switch was farther to link than the pedal could possibly go. I went under the dashboard and engaged it by hand then it started. I drove home and the shifting was still iffy. How can I make the switch engage normally again so its closer I guess and so I don't have to push so damn hard on the clutch to get it to start? And could the switch linkage have anything to do with the shifting being funky lately, or could that only be the clutch itself?

Ford Transmission :: 2001 F250 - Vibration And Grinding Noise When Drive Over A Slight Dip In The Road

2001 F250 7.3L 280k miles. Truck is new to me in the last 6 weeks. Was driving out to Glenwood Springs last night and I got a weird rear end vibration between 79 and 81 mph - couldn't say if it's a new vibration as haven't had the truck long enough. It's sort of still there over 81 but less obvious than bang on 80. Whilst the vibration was there I caught a slight dip in the road that caused a grinding noise to accompany the vibration - I'm guessing because something's was getting extra loading on the upside of the dip.

I'm away from home until Monday so my options are a bit limited, however while crawling around in the dark last night pushing and shoving stuff to see if anything was loose I noticed a couple of things:

Minor leak from pinion seal - but it has flung some spots of oil. Drive shaft 'center bearing'(? U shaped attachment on drive shaft to chassis with rubber bearing?) has play I can push the drive shaft at least a 1/4" with my hand and it seems a little sloppy but I'm no mechanic.

I'm going to check transmission fluid level today and top up if required and check the magnets, such that I can limp home as necessary avoiding 80 and get the diff checked and pinion seal replaced. Does the drive shaft bearing need changing or should it have that much play? I'm assuming it's LSD on the rear?

Saab - 9-3 :: Grinding Noise From Manual Transmission In 3rd Gear

I have a 98 saab 900 se turbo.90000 miles on it. Just had a new clutch kit/throwout bearing and master cylinder clutch installed, as the clutch was going bad.

When I shift the car (while driving) from 2nd into 3rd/4th/5th gear, and accelerate I suddenly notice what sounds like a "grinding"/raspy noise that stays with the car while in those gears. It does not occur in 1st or 2nd , although it seems that in first gear the rpms go up real fast now (could the gears be slipping again?? this is a brand new clutch..).

The second I shift to 3rd gear and give it gas, the noise shows up instantly.

It occurs every time I drive..not sure what to do and what causes this..maybe I just need to check the transmission fluid?

GTI 337/20th Anniversary :: Transmission Grinding Noise When Letting Out The Clutch

Normally I'm pretty good about searching and finding info, but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there for these trannys. In any case, when I hopped in my 20th to move it today, I got this grinding noise when letting out the clutch. The car won't go move in reverse or any of the forward gears. Idles fine, sounds fine when in neutral or when the clutch is depressed. It just grinds when you let the clutch out. Seems like I can select each gear OK. Linkage feels normal.

Camry :: Loud Scraping / Grinding Noise - Jammed Brakes Or Transmission?

I just bought this camry recently, it's an 2008 SE 4-cylinder with about 95k on it. Everything is fine on the car with the exception of one thing. Whenever I start it after a prolonged period of it being off, say in the morning or sometimes even having it off for an hour and then starting it again, when I start it, a loud grinding/scrapping noise comes from the front of the car.

This noise lasts for a good 30-60 seconds and as the car picks up speed it disappears. It just happens whenever I start it. Now I'm not sure that if the brakes or jammed or is it something to do with the transmission. I mention the transmission because during the drive, the car seems under a lot of pressure as if towing a large trailer and has trouble accelerating. At times when going downhill, it actually is slowing down as opposed to picking up speed and as soon as I let off the gas the speed drop from significantly.

I know this isn't normal because I used to an 2005 Camry LE 4-cylinder. So I know how the engine and transmission behave.

I took it the dealer recommended mechanic and he said that everything is fine. He's a nincompoop really. I took it to my mechanic and he said that the axle and bearing need to be changed on the passenger side and just the axle on the drivers side. My mechanic is a family friend and is skilled in his trade so I know he's not trying to shaft me.

Ford Excursion :: Noise Coming From Transmission At 2000 Rpm?

I cant replicate the sound when its in park so i did a very dangerous diagnosis having a friend stomp on the break in gear and rev the engine to exactly 2000rpm as i searched for the sound. The sound is coming from in front of the transmission. I had removed the inspection cover as per another members fix for this sound and its still there. Could it be the torque converter touching something after it flexes at that speed?.

Needs axles, timing belt water pump, ps return hose, plus have champions in there and old ass hyundai wires.... thing does idle rough, motor mounts are new.

Ford - Aviator :: Rattle / Knock Noise Coming From Top Side Of Transmission

I have a high mileage Aviator - it currently has 162k+ ... I have owned it since 136k, and according to Lincoln's records the transmission was rebuilt/replaced shortly before that ... The truck has run well since we've owned it.

It has developed a noise that I originally thought was an engine problem (bottom end), but I got under it today and took a good listen and it sounds to me like it's coming from the top side of the transmission.

I recorded some sound: 4.6L dohc "rattle" from above transmission - YouTube .....

Ford Transmission :: Nasty Ticking Or Clicking Noise Coming From The Front Of Trans

My daughter recently got a '92 f-150 SCAB 4x4, 302 w/ E4OD. The trans needed new seals in the front pump, so I did those and replaced the filter and fluid while at it. Now it runs fine, but it makes a nasty ticking or clicking noise. It is definitely coming from the front of the trans. I was thinking it was a cracked flexplate, so I pulled the inspection cover yesterday, but could not see any cracks. I have heard that sometimes you cannot see the cracks, as they are tiny, or around the crank bolts, which are not visible from the inspection cover. Is this the case? Also, could the torque converter be the culprit? I haven't heard of this kind of noise coming from the TC, but then, I've dealt mainly with manuals.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Strange Pop Noise Coming From The Transmission Area

I've got a 2016 250 6.2l and am getting a popping sound coming from the transmission area. the following is what i have figured out so far. the noise is made just before a complete stop, just as the tranny down shifts to 1st and can be felt through the manual floor shifter 100% of the time and heard roughly 90% of the time. sound ranges from not audible to loud and is random in how loud it is. the only way it does not do this is if i come to a stop in neutral or i go slow enough as not to have the tranny shift out of first from my last stop. the only other way is if i do one of those long, slow rolling stops. truck only has 6600 miles on it. i will be taking it in at 7500 for first service and have them look at it ...
