Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Heater Mostly Not Working - Defrost Keeps Blowing Fuse For AC Compressor

Nov 2, 2014

99 Jetta VR6... 190k

So the heat doesn't really work on my car- and its getting cold outside.

I read the DIY on fixing the resistor pack, but there is a lot of hooptiness to my ride, (not sure if that's the issue).

All the fan control speeds work, but the most I ever get is vaguely warm air- it never gets fully hot.

The temperature gauge does not work most of the time- it does occasionally (but randomly) work as expected.

The defrost doesn't work either due to an issue with the AC (it keeps blowing the fuse for the AC compressor- like, right away)

There's a multitude of issues happening here I know, but need to narrow down the suspects for the heat, that would be very useful.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Brake Lights Are Out - Fuse Keeps Blowing

First of all, its not a faulty brake light switch. I just found out that my rear brake lights have been out. I went to check the fuse and it was blown. I've replaced it but the second i touch the brake pedal, it pops again. Things I've tried...

I checked the wiring for any exposed wiring and i didn't find anything.

I disconnected the entire light assembly from the connectors on both sides and the fuse still blew.

I'm suspecting a bad ground, (as there was a point when the lights would work, even when i touched the pedal, but as soon as i pop the trunk open, the fuse would blow.

Where the lights are grounded? Is there anything else i should check?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - AC Quit Blowing Cold / Compressor Need To Be Charged?

The AC on my car (2002 Jetta 1.8t) quit blowing cold. Did some troubleshooting and...

1. Checked Freon- level was ok

2. Noticed cooling fans were not coming on with AC button pressed and ignition on. Fans also not coming on when car up to temperature, but gauge never went above normal. Seems strange considering I live in Houston and it was 95+ out.

3. tested fans with direct power and both high and low are fine.

4. jumped terminals 1,2 and 2,3 on plug for cooling fan switch and fans turn on high and low...so thought must be bad cooling fan switch.

5. Replaced cooling fan switch and still no fans or ac when AC button is pressed and ignition on.

6. replaced Fan control module. Still no fans.

7. Checked Freon once more...and although it was in the ok range decided to add a little more. (was in the middle of ok range, and a cheap gauge)

8. Compressor kicks on, along with cooling fan. End up using the 1 can I had and now have cold air and fans that come on when hitting the AC button with ignition set to on position.

I thought the mkiv cars would always turn on the fans when AC button is pressed with ignition on? Or does the compressor also need to be charged?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - Fuse Number 32 Keeps Blowing Immediately After Replacing

2003 Jetta TDI GLI , fuse number 32 (30 amp fuse) keeps blowing immediately after I replace it. I can't start my car because of it. I do have a shorting head light and the glow plug indicator flashes with the check engine light on. This doesn't happen all the time. When it does happen, sometimes the accelerator will not work and instead of idling at ~900 rpm it idles at ~1100 rpm. I usually just restart my car and then it works again. Not sure how these issues are related but I can't start my car because of this blowing fuse.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 GTI 1.8T - Unknown Fuse Blowing Constantly When Engine Starts

I have a 2002 GTI 1.8T with the AWP engine and tiptronic. There is a fuse in the picture below that blows as soon as the car is started. It is located next to the brake booster on the firewall. It does not blow when the ignition is turned on, just when the engine actually starts. I'm not throwing a check engine light, pulling a scanner code or noticing any of my electronics not working. I took a 20 AMP fuse out and replaced with another 20.....and have since blown 5 of them trying to diagnose the problem.

Ford A/C :: 1999 F250 - Fuse Blowing When Compressor Tries To Kick In

My truck has been blowing HOT when I put the A/C on. I suspected the blend door actuator and changed it out. I later discovered that the A/C fuse is blowing when compressor tries to kick in. I pulled clutch/compressor plug and fuse still blew. When I pulled plug on pressure switch fuse held. I put a fused jumper onto plug for pressure switch and fuse in cab held but fuse in jumper blew. Put cheapo can gauge on low side and it went to "warning' status (high, without compressor running). Is it a clogged something or is it electrical?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: AC Not Working / Low Voltage At Compressor

I am trying to figure out why my AC is not working. Both fans are coming on and the AC button is light up but it is not blowing cold. The charge was checked and it has a good charge. The compressor appears to not be engaging. I checked for power at the electrical connector for the AC compressor and my voltmeter is showing voltage between 3.1-8.3 volts. It jumps around between that voltage every few seconds. The fuses have all been checked and are in not broken. What else should I be checking?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - A/C Not Working - Compressor Won't Engage

I have a 2002 Jetta 1.8t and the A/c doesn't work. I took a look and I know that the clutch/compressor does not engage. also, the rad fans do not turn on when I have the AC on in the car. all I get is hot air. I tested the line and there is no freon in them whatsoever. which is why the compressor is off. however, I can't add any freon without it working. I checked the fuses on the side of my dash and on top of the battery as they seem to be ok. Also, I was told that I just need to replace the compressor with a new one and I should be good to go. Is this true? It will be an easy fix if it is.

Accent LC (2000-05) :: 2002 A/C Suddenly Not Working - Defrost Will Not Kick On The Compressor

Last summer the a/c in the car was ice cold. And until last week, the compressor was engaging when using the defroster. I am sure it was working because I started it one night, switched the controls to defrost, and the belt squealed just a bit. I think it's become a little slack and I need to adjust it... Anyway, the weather has started to change, (in the 70's) so I thought I should kick on the a/c to make sure all is still good. It wasn't. The defrost will not kick on the compressor either? When I push the a/c switch, nothing happens. No green light in the switch, no compressor. The blower works though. I checked all the fuses that had anything indicating "a/c." All were good. I switched the a/c relay with the tail light relay, (seems to have the exact same ratings) no go. What gives? I figure it's not likely that it's low on Freon, it has never "short cycled." And, wouldn't the light on the switch come on under a low Freon situation? Lastly, why four pins on the low pressure switch? Any easiest way to check which system is the fault? Manually engage the compressor clutch, or maybe short the low pressure switch?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Heater Blower Motor Not Working

I got a new resistor since my last one was in a puddle of water and installed that today and still have no heater blower motor. I checked all the fuses and have power. I sent power to the blower itself and it spins good. So somewhere between the fuse and the blower it isn't working. I need to take the controls out and test for power there. Didn't have time to do that today. What wires to check or where to start trouble shooting?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2004 - Overheating / Fans Stopped Working Correctly And Fuses Kept Blowing

I have a 2004 volkswagen jetta, and it has started overheating. At first my problem was the thermostat. After that was changed out the fans stopped working correctly. It kept blowing fuses in s180 slot.

I read somewhere in another post that this is due to the fact the resistor in the low speed fan go bad, and for your car's radiator fan to go from zero to high speed, causes the fuse to blow. Also I read that when the fans start up it draws the most current, and then after it's running the current is considerably less.

This is my solution, I went to napa, and got a circuit breaker for a car, and Yes, to my surprise they make them. I picked up several a 10amp, 15 amp, 20 amp, and a 30 amp. First, I tried the 30 amp circuit breaker and it didn't trip the circuit, but when I put a regular fuse in the slot, it did trip the circuit, when I did the fan test at the thermostat switch. Next, I put the 25 amp in there and neither did it trip the circuit. When I put the 10 amp in the s180 slot, it tripped the circuit, just as the regular 30 amp fuses do. So that confirmed that the amps that were being drawn from the fans were not enough to trip a 30 amp circuit breaker.

What I did next, is I took a 20 amp circuit breaker and put that in the s180 slot. Then I hooked up vag com on my laptop to check and see how it performed with the 20 amp circuit, and these are the results.

Car Temperature in celsius

at 111 degrees the gauge was moving past the halfway point
at 115 degrees the gauge was one notch past halfway going towards the red zone
at 120 degrees the gauge was two notches past halfway going towards the red zone
at 122 degrees the fans kicked on high speed for about 30 seconds, and knocked the
temperature down to 105 degrees.

In conclusion, if the high speed on the fans work, you don't have to take those out and go and buy an expensive new fan set. Just stick a 20 amp circuit breaker in the slot, and keep using the fans that you have.

Part no: 782-3154................ Name: Circuit Breaker, 20 Amp; Blade

Note: I take NO responsibility for any damage you do to your vehicle from any information you obtained from this post. Do this at your own risk! I am not a mechanical expert but this is my solution to the overheating problems.

Bought an 04' Pontiac Grand. AC worked fine on the test drive then after a few weeks the AC stopped blowing air. I can feel the compressor is working and the air is being conditioned but the blower motor does not turn on. I've tried using all the speeds and none of them work. I do not believe the controls are to blame but rather either

A.) resister or
B.) connector(s) or
C.) blown blower motor.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Signals Weren't Working / Gauge Fuse Blowing?

We bought this car a month ago, 2007 US touring model. It had a 15A fuse in the Gauge position (spec calls for 10A there) when we bought it. As of last week it is blowing a lot.

What we've noticed:

- First time it happened I noticed my signals weren't working. After 5 minutes of driving I pulled over and turned the car off and on. At that point the Combination Meter went blank. After getting home I found the fuse blown. Replaced it with a 10A fuse, and that blew right away when starting the car. Replaced it with a 15A fuse and it worked for a few trips.

- While I was away for a week, my wife replaced the fuse 3 times while it blew away from home. (she estimates every third trip) She has found it seems to happen when putting the car in reverse.

- Today the car is working fine, and I can't replicate the problem.
