Golf VI R :: Drivetrain Clunk / Pop When Engaging Gear And Shifting 1st - 2nd

Jul 22, 2015

I have been reluctant to post another clunking thread because it's nearly impossible to accurately describe what is happening. But I have reached by breaking point and I wanted a few opinions before I take it into the dealer. I am still under powertrain warranty, but I want to be confident I am not wasting mine and the dealers time if I am just missing something easy. I also know dealers don't always take clunks seriously so I want to pinpoint it first.

Symptoms : Car has 50k miles. I am the original owner.

From a stop, when getting the car rolling moderately aggressively there is a clunk/pop noise from the car. I can slightly feel it in the pedals and it is fairly loud. Almost like a distant hammer and nail pounding. It's a single clunk, with sometimes a double "pop pop". It's noticeable even with the radio turned up a little. If you are smooth on the throttle it doesn't make the noise. It seems random, like something is hitting something which only happens under certain weight shifts.

It sounds like it's from the rear and the front. It seems to switch. But honestly I am not confident either way. Where it is. It is silent on turns, bumps, speed bumps, driveway, etc. I don't think it's the suspension. It is not a clicking/tapping, only a single clunk or knock.

It also happens in 1st/2nd in stop and go traffic. If you leave it in 1st and the traffic is moving from say 8-15mph where you don't need to use the clutch it will clunk during on/off throttle. Anything above ~30mph I haven't been able to replicate the noise with on/off throttle.

It also does it if I downshift when coming to a stop and don't rev match. Say you are slowing down and you go from 4th, 3rd, then 2nd, let the clutch out and it rev matches up to ~3,000rpm which causes the weight to shift forward....clunk! It is not easy to replicate which is another reason I am slow to bring it to the dealer until I pinpoint it.

Things I have tried:

- Subframe bolt torque check. Installed ECS spacer/bolt kit anyway.
- Sway bar links are tight, or at least they didn't budge at all.
- Adjusted the rear hatch a million different ways as it was making a similar noise earlier.
- Spare tire tightened, tools removed
- Rear seats up/down/mix/seat belts fastened, etc.

I was only able to locate one motor mount? Where they are. Seems fine. Dogbone seems fine, again hard to tell.

Suspect:

I have VWR springs, but I am 90% sure this started happening right before I had them installed. I did the rears myself, a well known shop did the front. I noticed the noise maybe 2k before the springs were installed.

Clutch linkage somewhere - I had issues with my transmission (early build). The clutch was replaced at 7k. I've always had a very loud flywheel and a grinding feeling in the pedal. Maybe the shifter linkage is hitting something? I have little experience with VW's so I am still learning and don't know what to check.

My rear harmonic balancer is cracking like everyone else. I have no vibrations yet and I don't see how it could be causing a clunk in the current state. Maybe a motor mount is bad that I cant see? It feels like something is loose in the drivetrain.

Touareg :: Clunk When Shifting From 5th To 4th Gear

Today (not 2 days after taking delivery) I was travelling on the highway. stopped for fuel and as I am decelerating on the offramp when the truck shifted from 5th to 4th it went CLUNK, It did this twice, in the same circumstance. I can't make it replicate the noise every time. But 2 times in 24 hours is enough.

Accent LC (2000-05) :: Clunk While Shifting Into Second Gear

I have a 2005 Accent GL (4dr Sedan) base model, 5 speed. I live in Canada (not sure if that will play a part); I notice that when I shift from first to second there is a 'clunk', not really a grind, and not a major clunk... but it's noticeable. As the car warms-up, it seems to be less pronounced (or maybe I start to ignore it). Is this something to worry about? or could it be the clutch plates.

I have had lots of bikes with wet clutches and this is 'normal' for a bike going into first gear. With the bike it's due to what I call Hydrolic-stick ... (2 or more) plates 'sticking' when you let the clutch out, one spinning faster than the other. Off topic now...

Azera TG (2006-11) :: Transmission - Clunk When Shifting From 4th To 5th Gear

2007 Azera 120k miles. Have noticed first thing in the morning when shifting from 4th to 5th gear, I hear a clunk.. Yesterday I heard two clunks when downshifting from 5th to 4th. Tried shifting the car manually today and was able to replicate the problem. After 15 minutes of driving, the problem is gone.Never seems to happen in the afternoon after car has been driven.Transmission fluid is full. Have always changed at the 60k intervals.Fluid is not burnt. Light pink color.

What could possibly be causing this? Is this likely to get worse? How long might I have before the car might become not drivable ? I ask this because I have been considering trading it in for a new car. Now seems to be a good time to buy a 2016 car, since the 2017"s are almost out.

Toyota - Dolphin :: 1977 - Loud Clunk When Shifting Into Reverse Gear

Sometimes when putting the vehicle into first it's almost impossible to get it to go into gear. Sometimes it's super smooth. Also when putting into reverse we hear a loud clunk. That one is most of the time but sometimes it goes in smooth. I was doing some looking around at the pedals because I think I am going to have to replace my master cylinder and noticed that on the inside of the vehicle where the clutch master cylinder comes into the vehicle it's leaking black fluid. Does that automatically mean my clutch master cylinder needs to be changed? Could this be the cause of it being difficult to shift because the clutch isn't fully disengaging?

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Clunk In Drivetrain When Starting And Stopping

Whenever I take off from a stop or slow to a stop, there's a clunk in the drivetrain. It feels like a bit of play before the drivetrain engages and when it releases...torque converter maybe? Taking to the tranny shop soon...

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Scary Clunk In Drivetrain When Take Foot Off The Accelerator

I have a 2001 F250 7.3 with 175K.

Here is the situation. There is a disturbing clunk when I take my foot off the accelerator and a corresponding clunk when I push back down on the accelerator. This only occurs when the vehicle is not under load. That is, it does not happen when going up hill or on any sort of an incline. It does not happen when the automatic transmission shifts. It does not happen shifting into reverse or drive.

It does not happen when starting or stopping. It only happens when I am at 40-60, or so, miles an hour and let off the accelerator and/or press the accelerator again. It appears that I can carefully feather the accelerator to eliminate or, at least, minimize the clunk. I have crawled under the truck and it looks like all the U-joints are tight, I have lubricated the slip-yoke (although when twisted there is, like a mm of play when this is twisted, not much but a very little).

The rear-differential pinion appears to be tight (no side-to-side play or up-and-down play, or at least I can't make it move with my hands). However, when the truck is in neutral the entire driveshaft is able to rotate a half inch, or so, all the way up and down the drive train. That is, the transfer case and the rear differential appear to have a little rotational play in them, but I am guessing this is pretty normal. When in park the entire driveline seems solid.

I have seen from some of the other posts that this sort of clunking can come from leaf springs, hangers and such but since this clunk seems so isolated to acceleration changes when the vehicle is not under load, I doesn't seem like this would be the issue. No clunk when shifting, turning, bumps etc. Everything seems perfect until I am on a gentle downhill or flat and let off the accelerator. Doesn't appear to clunk when going down a steeper decline. All this gets me to thinking that the clunk is caused whenever the driveshaft rotation gets ahead of or behind the rotation in the rear differential.

Golf V R32 :: Clunk In Trans When Shifting From D To R

Experienced a clunk when shifting from D to R, especially when in a parking situation where you might shift back and forth a few times. I always make sure the car is not rolling and my foot is firmly on the brake while shifting from D to R or vise versa, but it doesn't seem to work. Is this normal with the DSG or should i bring it in to the dealer?

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Clutch Slipping - Harsh Shifting - Loud Clunk Noise Into Gear 2 Then 1

New truck 11000kms ago thats done medium amount of work but nothing heavy or sustained for long periods of time. I get the feeling of clutches slipping especially when truck is cold but also when normal temps. Doesnt make any weird noises or anything. I can really notice the difference in torque if in manual mode being much better, but still not perfect if i stomp on the gas pedal and go through the gears in manual mode will still slip. Also is really harsh shift if i come to a halt in 3rd manual mode with the brake pedal depressed push minus button the truck makes very loud clunk noise into gear 2 then 1. Took it to ford they couldnt find anything ? Thinking of trying another dealer.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 3rd Gear Not Engaging

Just put transmission back in car after getting 3/4 gear synchros replaced and tdi 5th gear installed. I adjusted the shift linkage multiple times and did the procedure 100% correct. Now, all gears work except for 3rd. I can't get into 3rd at all whether shifting with cables installed or just freely from tower.

Golf/GTI VI :: Clunk Type Noise From Transmission When Shifting In To Or Out Of 2 / 3 / 4

The first thing is that suddenly there's a clunk type noise from the transmission when shifting in to or out of 2/3/4. Also, when I'm in one of those gears, letting off the throttle and then re-applying lightly causes the clunk noise. However, I haven't noticed any actual performance difference, just the new noise. It's loud enough that I can hear it over the radio at a reasonable volume, and it may or may not be my imagination but I think I can feel it through the floor of the car.

The next thing is that in the mornings, the car seems to have trouble getting in to gear from a stop. So I'll pull up to a light, then stop, and if I take off the brake and get immediately on the throttle, the car will lurch pretty bad, even if it's only a little throttle. I've found that if I let off the brake, and wait specifically to hear/feel the transmission kick in, there's no lurch and everything is fine.

Also, on that same note, sometimes when I let off the brake at these times, the car nearly stalls. It hasn't stalled yet but it's felt close a few times.

As well, from a cold start, there is what feels like an absolute ton of engine braking in second gear, I can feel the car pulling back immediately after I let off the throttle, and this seems strange and new as well.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 03 - Shifter Stopped Engaging 1st Or 2nd Gear

My03 GLI will not engage first or second gear.

This morning, i was having some issues getting the car in reverse, but it eventually engaged and is fine now. I drove to the barbershop, and on the way home, the shifter stopped engaging 1st or 2nd gear. it moves freely into position (TOO FREELY) and all other gears will engage. common sense tells me that the clutch is fine and the problem is with the shifter.

Ford - Explorer :: 2004 - Drivetrain Noise Like Slamming In And Out Of Gear

My '04 Explorer started making a noise like slamming in and out of gear. Felt and sounded like the transfer case was slipping or jumping teeth. Turning slow in gravel the left rear would drag like a spider gear problem.

It has the Auto 4x4 system, Auto-4H-4L. I pulled transfer case out and apart. No signs of teeth missing, slipping, nothing. Chain looks good, bearings good. Clutch pack good. No sign of any metal shavings in the case.

Pulled rear differential, one bad spider gear for the left axle is all I found. Not enough for the very hard slamming it was doing. U joints & axles good also.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2005 - Clunk Sound When Going Into Gear

So I have a 05 mk4 golf 2.0 automatic. Ive noticed that when i take it from park to drive the car shakes and makes a huge clunk sound like I just got hit by something. Turns out it was a motor mount, I think they call it the dog bone cause its attached to the body & engine of the car. So it was replaced but the car still does it. But not as hard & not as much. Before when I revved the car it would kind of shake and dance. Since the replacement it parks still when I rev it. But that noise is still there. Someone told me it could be another mount or the torque converter.

Golf V R32 :: Clunk Into 6th Gear On Light Throttle And D Mode

Posting this because I saw many other owners with the same problem. Basically after warming up DSG every time clunk into 6th gear on light throttle and D mode, speed around 50kmh rpm around 1400.

You can hear it and feel it on pedal a little. Sometimes is not so harsh sometimes its big clunk. Of course it did on manual mode too if you try shift in the same position.

Original thread here: [URL] ....

Its well known that DSG D mode is set to shift early for better fuel economy but this is not good and really annoying.

I have same problem and its not mechatronic related mine was replaced do to jerkiness on 2 gear and clunking into 6th it is the same.

So I know that fix could be DSG tune/reprogram that many company offer. D mode is optimized and shifting moved to "normal" rpms. A lot of you don't have even problem because your its already flashed with combo etc.

But in my area no body offer DSG tune and i really don't know how to solve this problem... don't want to replace whole gearbox because in all other ways works ok.

I have 2012 MU with i think lastest SW and it didnt change anything on this.

Golf/GTI VII :: Won't Shifting Into Gear?

So I just got home from a road trip yesterday, no problems on the trip. This morning I drive out of my neighbourhood, turn onto the highway and I think to myself, that's strange, clutch feels a little notchy ... and then I go to shift gears and it won't go into gear. Any gear. I push down and it just won't engage, it pops right back up. Had to walk a mile home carrying my kid in his car seat and trailing my 6 year old little girl. Now I'm getting it towed home so I can check the engine bay to make sure everything is cool. If everything is connected and I can't determine the issue then I gotta flash back to stock and hit up VW and have it towed over there.

Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: Intermittent Clunk When Engaging Brakes During Reverse Maneuvers

I've noticed an intermittent clunk which occurs when engaging the hydraulics brakes during reverse maneuvers. It happens with anything from very light to very heavy brake force and typically will happen before driving very far (backing out of driveway, out of parking spot, etc) but does not happen after driving (backing INTO driveway or parking spot). This has been occurring for a while now with no other symptoms (other than some shudder during take off which I attribute to a sloppy transmission bushing).

Front brakes were in great shape when I r&r them a while back to turn the rotors, didn't pull the rears apart but they look good, and I don't have any brake vibrations or issues when moving forward. I can't rule out a driveline clunk or suspension clunk either but the u-joints don't have any slop in them and no squirrely handling issues either.
