I've noticed distinct engine knocking noise under acceleration/load especially at lower RPMs on a '14 TSI. I'm at 20k miles and wondering if cheap gas from ARCO is the culprit.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2015 Sonata 2.0T and I have noticed knocking noise when driving. I experience it more when on the highway/freeway. I mainly experience it during acceleration. Not hard acceleration but when I want to overtake or when the road curves and coming out of the curve -I step in the gas a bit, I hear the knock.
View 11 RepliesLately it has been in the 20's in my area and I've noticed on the first start of the morning the engine sounds very loud and produces a "knocking" noise that lasts a few seconds and then goes back to its normal loud idle. This only happens on the first start of the day...all subsequent starts in the day are fine. (mine is a 2007 model with the FSI engine)
View 11 RepliesI have a 2007 volkswagen passat 2.0 L...115000 miles. Yesterday I was entering the freeway and I accelerated the car a bit when I started hearing this noise on the engine. I will try my best and describe the noise as a knocking of metal on metal. I thought maybe is the oil and changed it.
Now today I was going up the hill and accelerated the car when the noise appeared again, it happened again a little bit later, again going up a hill. There is no noise when I drive normally or I accelerate and I am not going up a hill.
I have yet another issue with my Hyundai Accent. It seems to me that I hear engine valve knocking. Here tech. details:
- This happens around 1100-2000 rpm.
- The car currently has 11500 KM.
- 3 oil changes so far - using Mobil 1 - 10W30.
- I put in regular gas.
- No mods, only bug guard.
I drive slow - slow acceleration and I noticed sometime ago that there was a knock coming from an engine at about 1400-1700 RPM, however now I can hear it anywhere from 1100 to 2000 rpm. I can hear it very well when I drive along curbs and walls since engine sound bounces off it. I have automatic gear box and therefore I don't know how to test it further ( on manual I would have put some load on the engine by switching into high gear and pressing gas - make engine struggle a bit ). It might be noise from injector but I don't know. Also I don't know if Accent 2010 has self-adjusting valves or not.
What would cause both Cat converters to fail at 20,000 mi.? Mine went out and the back pressure caused the engine to knock under acceleration. Also blew out an injector and plug. Luckily it was under warranty but wonder what could caused it.
View 8 RepliesMy 2000 7.3 2wd is making a knocking sound while accelerating. It speeds up as I accel and when I let off the gas it gets louder. It slows down all the way to a stop when the truck slows to a stop. I can feel it in the floor board a bit as well.
View 8 RepliesI have begun to notice a "Knock" or "rattle" in the engine. I know diesels have a tendency to sound like that just from running but that sound is more of a "cackle" if you ask me.
I can hear the "knock" most noticeably at hard acceleration or taking off in general. It can also be heard during idle and every so faintly at deceleration with the torque converter locked so it makes me thing its mechanical due to the nature of the way the sound is audible.
I believe the sound is coming from the passenger side bank as that is where I can hear it the best with my head under the hood. I have a code reader and checked, I have no visible codes other than it telling me about secondary fuel circuit high which I suspect was from showing off with my friends.
I did a cylinder balance test and again got 3 (PO269) and 8(PO284) which I have been told are very common.
I checked my ICP readings and it was 500~ and 11%
Pulse width for injectors was 2.50~
I did a KOER test and received no codes
Glow Plugs showed okay
KOEO (PO605)- Internal Control Module Read Only Memory error.
Exhaust Absolute Back Pressure was 16.2 at Idle with MBRP 4" Turbo back.
Also, I have noticed a drop of about 5-10 degrees in my oil temp and about 100 degrees drop in my EGT's although it has been pretty cold here recently (32 degree oil temp when I started her at 2 in the afternoon)..
I think it might be a bad piston skirt? I am guessing that from my experience with motorcycle engines but these are a totally different beast and that is why I am here...
I have 634,000 Miles and from what I have been told the engine has never been broken into so I would expect something like this myself. I am mostly looking for a place to start. Should I pull the oil pan and look for debris? (Oil was clean last time I changed it less than 2000 miles ago).
Should I pull the passenger bank apart and look inside? Is there a chance I am just hearing the noise due to the additive wearing off and me being used to the quieter engine?
I've got an 02 passat 1.8t that started knocking on me but its not all the time its only after it gets up to running temp. it will sit there an idle with no problem and run smooth. when you rev it up it starts to flash stop oil pressure. i have been running engine cleaner through it under a belief that it has become built up with sludge or carbon.

View 10 RepliesI took my car into the dealer to have them check out the loud knocking/pinging sound from the engine. First time, they told me that it was normal. It bugged the heck out of me so I took it in for the second time. Note: I was given a loaner to drive and it happened to be another 06 Passat 2.0T and this one sounded fine to me. The lead tech did kind of agree that it was a bit loud. So, they replaced a new fuel pump and did an oil change....?? But that of course didn't fix the issue. The noise is so loud that I can hear it inside the car w/ windows up when I'm sitting in traffic or at the light. Also at night, I can hear it when I'm standing about 15 or 20 yrds away from the front of the car.
I realize that the engines will have some sort of knocking sound (my 330i does that), but shouldn't be this loud. So, does this sound normal? BTW, the dealer told me that they contacted VW engineers and was told that it was perfectly normal. I don't really buy that!! I've only had this car for almost a month (took advantage of the CPO w/ 2.9% fin) and I don't want to have to deal with this if this seems to be an issue. I guess who does, huh?
I've been hearing a clicking/knocking noise when i make turns recently and was wondering if it could just be hums in need of replacement... I have a 2002 Passat, so I think its a bit early for it to go but ya never know. If they are the hubs, what causes them to wear out so quick and around how much they'd be to replace (in parts...labor varies). The noise is only when I turn, no noise at all when driving straight.

View 1 Replies2000 Pontiac Grand AM SE 2.4L DOHC 129,000 estimated miles. After arriving home from the highway, I took notice of a noise coming the engine. Popped the hood just to hear the knocking noise. I had a mechanic from a dealership listen to it. His said it was a lifter or two. Doubtful of what he said, I got a second opinion and this mechanic said it was a rod. So, my question is this, can the rods be replaced without removing the engine?
View 3 RepliesSo, I am driving, engine starts to knock, i stop, check oil, there is none.... I drive to nearest gas station, put in 4 quarts, still knocks but quieter. Drive back home 75 miles, knocking is incredibly loud. Had oil changed 2500 miles ago, no signs of leaking (Did they put oil in after draining? Hard to prove they didn't) By the time I got home, new oil was black. Is this an engine replacement or can it be fixed?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2002 1.8T with about 75k miles which makes a harsh rhythmic sound at idle after about 30 minutes of driving. If I tap the accelerometer to increase the rpm and release it goes away and is silent. Recently it also seems to be making the same sound when it starts but goes away as soon as I drive. The sound seems to be coming from the front lower right (passenger side).
I have changed the timing belt about 18 months ago (along with the water pump, tensioner, etc. using an ECS tuning kit) and it ran fine (seemed even smoother than before) but it had a small engine oil leak which my mechanic fixed. I think this sound started after he repaired the leak. I've left the car with him for a week and he just called and said it he couldn't figure it out but it could be an oil pressure problem but I have not had any issues with an oil pressure light.
I have had issues with the P0411 code over the same and have replaced both the secondary air pump and the combi valve but the code just reappeared and my mechanic says he has checked the entire system again and can't figure out what is causing the problem. Not sure if the two can be related but just thought I would add that. The car runs fine otherwise and I have always used synthetic and the large oil filter but I am beginning to think this could be a sludge issue (the noise).
I started my Gen 4 Prius two yesterday and got out to adjust a bolt on the rear license plate and noticed a strange sound as the ICE in high throttle began the warm-up cycle- a sound like water sloshing around in the cat converter (or somewhere upstream?). Other new Gen 4 owners please check this and see if you hear this on startup. It is not regular enough a sound to be engine knocking, but literally like water churning. Not loud enough to hear from anywhere but right near the lower rear of the car. Hear this on new 2016? My Gen 3 never had this sound.

Went to dealership. They removed the oil pan and found metal shavings there .The car has 90,000 miles. They will put a new short block (will be covered by warranty ).
Since they basicaly will disassemble the whole engine, I thought to ask them to replace also drive belts, timing chain tensioner, not sure if the short block comes with the water pump , will ask them . W
2004 Santa Fe, 2.7 L V6. The oil was changed approx 5-7k miles ago (not really sure as I bought it from someone else) and I just changed it today. There's a new knocking noise in the engine. I used normal castrol GTX oil, 5w-30.
I drove it about 20 miles and the noise is still being made, so it's not a circulation problem.
The engine in my 2006 Mazda Tribute seems to have developed a knocking noise. I am not sure what causes it or how to determine where it is coming from.
View 11 RepliesMy car has 63 000 km and engine is making loud knocking noise all the time. Dealer took a quick look and he asked head office. Now he wants to run some tests to see which valve is bad. He's hesitating between repairing or replacing the engine. I'm really disappointed of Hyundai quality. I really hope that I get new engine instead of poor repair job.
