This is the second night in a row that we hear a noise coming from the back of the car. I know that some noises are normal but this is after the car is stopped/parked in the garage for some 5 hours.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2011 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder LE. When the car has been parked for a period of time 2hours plus, I hear a noise coming from the engine right in front of the Driver Seat. The noise only happens on the first acceleration after its been parked. It only happens once.
It sounds like something moves or shifts into place.
Celebrating the new ride - a real solid, luxury car. Noticed a small motor racket in the garage. traced back to the rear e-brake. Start-stop and it went away. Saw plenty of threads on brake noise - experienced this problem while parked (hours later)?
View 1 RepliesMy wife left her newer 2013 Prius "on" at work....by this I take to mean she did not hit the on/off button when leaving the car. to turn off the car I asked if it started ok, and she reported yes; however on return from the gym about 3 miles away, she says she noticed the Hybrid Battery bars going down very quickly now and the gas-engine on almost the whole time.

View 14 RepliesWent down to my garage after the Prius had been off for at least 5 hours and heard a whirring kind of like a fan in the back half of the vehicle. I had never heard this before and it went on for at least 5 minutes then quit. My garage was probably around 60 degrees for most of that time, fwiw. Seems like the area of the battery fan but why would that need to run?
View 2 RepliesA few weeks ago I started to notice that the battery vent fan was turning on way more than usual. I've had the car now for five years (34K miles) and I've only heard the fan go on a handful of times, even in the hot Las Vegas summers. Once I really started to pay attention to it I noticed the noise only started once I hit about 30-35 mph and got louder as I went faster. As I slowed down, the noise would get quieter and eventually stop as the car came to a stop.
This week I caved and brought the car in to the dealer to get checked out and they did an inspection of the vent, fan and did a complete diagnostic on the hybrid system and batteries. I was worried about damage to the traction battery if the vent fan was malfunctioning or clogged. I'm out of warranty with no extended coverage so I was pretty shocked that the dealer didn't charge me a dime to do the tests. All the tests came back clean and they said all the systems tested above average and that the fan was operating normally so I shouldn't worry about it.
But the noise still persists and it's starting to drive me a little batty. It has never made this much noise before. Is there something else that could be going on that the dealer missed? Maybe the noise I'm hearing is something else and it only sounds like it's coming from that area?
My 2010 Prius was hit while parked. The left side was wiped out and the whole car was pushed sideways about 2-3 inches, with the parking brake on. Toyota checked out the car and said everything looked fine. But there is this odd sounding humm coming from the rear of the car. Toyota says that is normal. Is this true?

Heard a grinding noise coming from the back of the truck today. First thing I thought to look at was the rotors. They looked warped/wavy and were really hot. I'm worried that the pads are used up and its metal on metal, really looks like rotor damage. I'm confused by this...
1) I get a safety inspection done every time i'm in for service (6km), no service rep has ever warned me about my pads.
2) Aren't squealers supposed to warn the driver of low pads?
3) Pads wear out faster in the front than they do in the back. How could the back pads be used up already? The front looks fine.
So if my back calipers are seized, or the e-brake line froze, then i'm driving with the back brakes engaged full time. This should not have happened to a truck so young. Do I have a warranty case here?
So for about two months I've had a crazy annoying whining noise coming from my back right tire. I've brought it to my garage twice, both time my mechanic has told me not to worry and cleaned the breaks. He has no real solution further than that.
I understand that it might not be something serious, but it's driving me crazy!
It's worth noting that I also need an alignment, with my car steering to the right normally.
I heard a fan sound coming from the back seat after driving in traffic for 45 minutes. It was coming from the vent in the back seat. I didn't know that that vent had an electric fan. I assume it was the battery being cooled. I have never heard this sound before.

View 2 RepliesI have a 1998 VW Passat station 1.81 Turbo that has started to do something weird. After driving the car, after the car has been parked for 1-2 hours, the car's horn starts honking and the lights start flashing- all this for 20 seconds (approx). We don't have a remote clicker to the car, or after market alarm, so it is not an accidental hit on the button. This started a week ago, and was once a day, now sometimes it is 2 x a day. We purchased this car from our landlord who will buy it back at the end of our stay. We have already replaced clutch and fixed numerous oil leaks. What could cause this?
View 4 RepliesThe other morning I went out to the garage and heard a strange noise coming from the rear (underneath the 3rd row seating/storage area) of my GX460. It sounded like a pump or something running continuously. I was in the garage for 10 minutes and the noise had started before I entered the garage and continued after I left. When I went back out to the garage 3-4 hours later it had stopped so I am not certain how long it was running for. I previously owned a 2006 GX470 with the rear air suspension and this was not the sound that was coming from my new GX. The car had not been running or driven in over 8 hours and I am at a loss as to what it could be. I figured I would check here first before delving into the 700+ page owners manual to troubleshoot.
View 9 RepliesOn more than one occasion, when I have gone in my garage at around 5 a.m., I hear a hum/buzz coming from the back end of my Prius. It has to come from the battery pack because the sound seems to come from under the back end of the car and is not as audible when I open the hatch.
View 2 Replies1995 ranger. 132k miles. I have been having an intermittent starting problem. I replaced the battery which was 3+ years old. I thought that cured the issue because the truck started without a problem then, the same problem occurred. I started the truck and drove about 10 miles. Parked it for about 2 hrs. Went out and tries to start it. The engine cranked, but would not start.
Tried a second time and would not start.
I turned on the lights and proved the battery was good.
Tried to start it and it turned over.
I took it to a shop and they could not fine the problem.
I asked if it was a possible problem with the solenoid, alternator,
They said if it was those the engine would not turn and you would just hear a click.
They drove it for a week and it happened to their technician but he said he did not have his equipment to check it.
He got it started after a few tries as I did and got it back to the shop. Ran a scan.
Four codes returned that really did not identify the issue - P0231, P1701, P0340, P1270. They cleared the codes and drove it again. They checked the codes. It showed code P0340. The shop says the code states to replace the cam position sensor and installing an updated DPFE sensor.
I have been driving it for about a week on and the problem has not resurfaced yet. A friend whom I work with does some car maintenance told me it is a dead spot on the starter and to replace it.
On the December day my 2013 Prius Five model (hatchback with all the safety add ons, bigger wheels) turned 18 months old, i was on the way to have one of the freebie services. I heard a metallic rattle, seemingly coming from the back of the interior. It continues and I cannot find a source for it. I just read a thread about rattles in the 2011s. Not particularly comforting given what I spent on the car.
Is this something I could have the dealer chase under the warranty? (this is the first new car i ever bought in my 50 years of driving, so my familiarity with new car warranties is a little thin.)
My dealer has been pretty responsive -- swapping out an interior door panel as a freebie when the armrest portion separated from the lower portion and collapsed into the door.
I wrote about the problem I was having back in Jan 2014 (engine would crank too long if I left the car parked for 30 mins to 4 hrs) ..... well, I finally brought it o a good diagnosis tics place and some of the guys that replied to me we're correct ..... they told me that the crankshaft position sensor (1of 2 sensors) was faulty and replaced it.
View 3 RepliesI recently (two weeks ago, actually) bought a one owner clean car fax 2007 Prius with 125k after totaling my 2004 - I got the 04 cheap enough that the payout covered the new one. The car ran perfectly; quiet, no whining or grinding noises, etc. About a week ago, the check engine light came on. The next day, I got in it to drive to school. I get to the middle of my campus and it starts to lag (very similar to the way my 04 did when it needed a new hybrid battery cell). I pull over and turn the car off and back on since that used to be what would get me home in the 04.
Every single warning light came on, including the master one. My "BRAKE" warning light is also on even though the e-brake is not. The car would not show "ready" and would go into park, but if I tried to shift into anything else, it would pop into neutral. (The dash as of now is shown below.) This is not user-error. I have driven a 2nd gen Prius before, I know about pressing the brake down when you start it. The garage I had to get it towed to has no idea what to do with it and each Toyota dealership I called told me that they hadn't heard of before.
I bought a new 12V and the garage said it didn't make a difference, but I'm not entirely convinced they even tried it.
