Ford - Explorer :: 2010 V6 - Growling In Front End

Jul 21, 2017

2010 v6 4wd. I have some growling in my front end. I got the truck in the air and neither wheel has any wobble (to check the front wheel hub assembly). I got under the truck and disconnected the large plug going into the T/C. Still noisy.

This truck used to be so quiet, but a couple years ago I had uneven tires that caused the 4wd to be on a ton. I just replaced all 4 a few weeks ago and that did not change the noise.

Is it possible that a bearing is still the culprit even without wobble? I can weave right and left and cannot notice it getting better or worse.

Also noticing my gas mileage dipping over the years, I am down to low 18s/high 17s with somewhat highway miles (2 miles of my commute around 35mph and the other 18ish going around 55 with 1 or 2 stops).

Ford - Explorer :: 2007 - Growling Noise From Front End

Front end has a growling noise. When pulling a load it is worse. When the front end has more weight the noise and vibration is less. When traveling dead straight now growl really but turn the wheel a fraction of an inch either left or and a growl vibration. Turns left or tight fully bring on the same hard growl. Steering pump is pumping fine. Either steering box or front wheel bearing is my guess. 2007 Explorer 4.6 ...

Ford - Explorer :: 2005 - Grinding / Growling In Front Differential

I have some pretty bad grinding/growling in the front of my 2005 Explorer XLT 4-door. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT a wheel bearing. The noise seems to be coming from the front left wheel, and you can feel it when turning the hub by hand. I've changed that hub twice now (took a chance that the first one was defective), but neither made any difference. Both were torqued to 184 FtLbs per spec.

I took the outboard end of the left front cv shaft out of the hub and turned it by hand, and something at the inboard end felt crunchy. So then I pulled the shaft out and checked it over, and both sets of splines and CV joints are good. Axle shaft bearing in the differential looks good too---rolls well and no visible damage to the rollers. I'm thinking that it's got to be something in the front differential like a carrier bearing. The odd thing is that when I drove it with my Chassis Ear tool hooked up underneath, the noise was picked up at the left front knuckle, with nothing really audible from three different points on the differential case. I'm stumped on this.

Is there any safe way to drive the vehicle with the front CV shafts pulled? I'd like to isolate the front diff to be sure it's the source of the noise.

The noise does quiet way down in right turns, but the FR hub bearing was pretty quiet with the Chassis Ear hooked up. The noise starts at 20mph and dissipates above 45mph. Not like what the bad bearings on my Escape did...those just kept getting louder.

Are these Explorers known for front diff weaknesses? How can I find out what gear ratio I have, in case I decide to replace the whole unit (a used one is half the price or less than the rebuild quote I was given by a local shop).

Ford - Explorer :: 2005 XLT - Growling That Sounds Like Coming From Front Left Wheel

I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with the 4.0L V6 and AdvanceTrac.

I've had a worsening growl in the front end that sounds like it's coming from the front left wheel. I can feel it in the steering wheel, and the sound goes away when I turn the wheel right of center. Center (going straight) or leftward steering, and the noise comes right back.

I changed the wheel bearing today, and there is absolutely no change in symptoms. Turning the CV shaft back and forth by hand, something feels kind of "grindy." It is the same at any point along the shaft, which has me worried that the bad bearing is in the front differential.

Elantra MD (2010-15) :: 2014 - Front End Growling Noise

Last week I heard my front end start growling and figured it was a bearing. I bought bearings and when I tore the front end down the left (driver) side felt fine when I had the knuckle out. I changed it anyhow. The right side felt kinda OK and I changed it. I've got a press and made sure not to press on the wrong parts. When I took it for a drive the noise is actually worse now. It's got all the standard bearing symptoms. It get louder the faster I drive and changes when I swerve back and forth. I put the car back on the jack and noticed I could wiggle the wheel a bit. I pulled the wheel and the spindle was able to wiggle. I figured maybe the axle nut was a little loose and I was able to get about 1 more turn on it. That took out the wiggle but the noise is still there. Did I get 2 bad bearings or did I do something wrong?

Prius (2010-12) :: 2011 - Growling Noise From Front Right Engine Compartment Area

My 2011 Prius plus made a growling noise from the front right engine compartment area the other day. Yesterday as I drove it to work...it stopped growling and the A/C stopped blowing cool air. The volume of air from the vents is the same, just no A/C.

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - Growling Noise When Any Pressure Is Applied To Steering Wheel

Have an 06 2WD Explorer with 80,000mi and when driving down highway there is a bit of growling noise when any pressure is applied to the steering wheel. When driving straight not moving steering wheel its quite but when going around corner or curve tends to make noise. What I should be looking for? Brakes were replaced 10K miles ago. Ball joints or wheel bearings?

Ford - Focus :: 2000 - Growling Noise From Right Front

As I'm driving my ford focus I hear a growling noise from the right front. It goes away while turning left.I jacked it up and feel no play in the wheel. I'm thinking it is either the wheel bearing or the drive axle. How could I tell which one?

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Growling Coming From Front End - No Fuel Pressure

2003 F250SD 5.4 4x4... When I recently heard a growling coming from my front end. I read some great posts on here about the whole front end tear down. Replaced all my ball joints, universals, wheel bearing hub units, locking hubs.....

So yesterday i came home from work, about 30 minutes later i hit the key on the truck and it wouldn't start. Kinda sounded like it wanted to but was starving for fuel. SO i grabbed the fuel pressure gauge and did a quick check......and No fuel pressure at all. Checked the fuse, Couldn't find a Relay in the fuse panel (Is there one for the fuel pump??). Anyway 4 hrs later the trucks starts right up like nothing is wrong.

Go figure, I'm 2 days away from my last payment ...now everything has to be going wrong.... Do these fuel pumps act up like that ??

Chevrolet - Malibu :: Growling / Rubbing Noise Coming From The Front Of Car

I have a 4 cyl. '99 Chevy Malibu with 137K. Two weeks ago she started making a growling/rubbing noise coming from the front of the car. If I steer even a little to the right the noise goes away. If the steering wheel is straight or turned to the left the noise persists. The noise is always present, except when turning to the right and at when I slow to stop there becomes a slight oscillation in the noise.What is it? Is it hard to repair? I typically change my own brakes, alternator, tie-rods, and simpler car repair tasks.

Accent MC (2006-11) :: 2010 - AC Compressor Is Making Growling Noise

We have a 2010 Hyundai Accent, with low miles (10,000), and the A/C Compressor is making a "growling" noise. The only way to explain the noise is when you hear a human try to immiate the sound of a dog growling. That's exactly what it sounds like.

First thing in the morning it doesn't make the noise to much, but as you drive for a bit you will start to hear it. Sometimes it's really loud, sometimes quieter. When you shut the A/C off, it will continue for a few seconds then stop.

The service department told me it was the compressor and it is, "pretty normal on the cars." How is that normal though? It sounds awful.

Ford - Explorer :: 2001 - Front Wheels Seem To Stay Engaged With Front Differential

We have an 01 Sport Trac as a backup vehicle and it has the 3 position rotary switch on the dash for 4wd.

The transfer case engages and disengages but the front wheels seem to stay engaged with the front differential.

There are no manual hubs and I really don't think it should ALWAYS be engaged like that.

What is the probable issue and ALSO can manual hubs be installed on this truck?

Someone mentioned vacuum engagement? but I didn't see any vacuum hoses near the spindles. Didn't see any wires either other than ABS...

Ford - Explorer :: 2002 - Loud Hum From Front End At 25 - 40 Mph

I recently acquired an 02 explorer sport. Noticing a loud hum(similar to what knobby tires sound like) at 25-40 mph. Doesn't make noise at any other speeds. I replaced both front hubs, new shocks, new rotors and pads, sway bar links, even tried rotating tires, absolutely no change. Tires are a standard highway pattern , not luggy so I don't think it's those. Kinda lost on what to do next.

Ford - Explorer :: 2002 XLT - Front Wiper Failure

My 2002 Explorer XLT recently experienced a front wiper failure. Initial indications started a few months ago. When trying to turn the wipers on to the intermittent position, nothing would happen. Turning the switch to low or hi then back to intermittent would allow the intermittent to work OK. Issue seemed to be occasional (trying not to overuse intermittent).

A couple days ago, daughter takes off to meet pals, comes back saying wipers died completely, won't move, won't park, no response to any switch position. I checked it out and researched some of the relevant threads here. My findings thus far:

Front wiper int/lo/hi positions do not work
Front washer pump works fine
Rear wiper switch positions all work fine
High beam, low beam and flash-to-pass work fine
Left and right turn signals work fine.

I am figuring the MFS is probably not the problem.

Looking in the owners manual it seems that fuse #8 protects front and rear wash pump relays and front wiper motor relay. Since front and rear wash pumps actuate fine, I figure fuse #8 is OK and the pump relays (#4 & #6) are OK.

Fuse #20 protects the GEM and Memory Module. Since I am not experiencing any issues with dash lights, idiot lights, chimes, locks or other GEM associated items, I am guessing fuse #20 is OK and the GEM is OK.

This leads me to relays 54 (run/park) and 59 (hi/lo). Since the wipers will not run or park, I am guessing that the run/park relay is having an issue. I presume that the intermittent function is cotrolled by the GEM based on the Intermittent switch position

Am I missing anything or overlooking some complexity that should change my logic? Is it likely for the MFS to fail only the front wiper portion of the controls?

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 - Front Hub Getting Sloppy And Noisy?

I drive a 1999 Explorer XLT AWD with the 5.0. Here lately the front end has started getting sloppy and noisy. When driving slowly in town it makes a clunking sound on the front passenger hub area any time I hit a bump. It cleans up a little at highway speed. Does this sound a bearing issue, an AWD issue, or a CV issue? Also, if it is a bearing issue can I rebuild my own hubs or will I have to by an assembly?

Ford - Explorer :: 2004 - Howling / Humming Front End

So here is the deal, as the title states I have a humming/ howling noise in the front end, gets louder when I turn left and quiet when turning right. I have replaced both side hub/bearings, and upon inspection I had a broke quick strut on the right hand side, also replaced that along with sway bar link. I've rotated tires, checked pressure and tread is all good. What this could be.

Ford - Explorer :: 2010 - Vibration At 65 Mph?

I just bought a 2010 Explorer XLT on Saturday with 7,200 miles on it. Everything is great on it, but we noticed a vibration at about 60 -70 mph. Im thinking/hoping tires might need balancing. It does semm to subside a little when slight turn to the left and increase when sight turning to the right (like lane changes). Were/are there problems with the auto 4wd and the sensors? This is still under warrenty until 4/13, but tire balancing is not covered under warrenty. I'm taking it back to the dealer today under the 30 day warrenty that they offer, but they seemed really cool as far as if you just bought it and it vibrates, we will fix it. They say and have so far want us to be totally satisfied. I hate dealing with car dealers worse than going to the dentist, but this was a relatively pleasant experience. Let me know what you all think. I told the wife we were getting a brand new 2010 Explorer and she said that didn't make sense. I said with 7,000 mile on it it was like a brand new car. We need to get rid of the vibration now.

Ford - Explorer :: 2010 XLT 4X4 4.0L Will Not Start

My wife's 2010 Explorer XLT 4X4 4.0L will not start. I've been working on it most of the day, trying to get it going. I've checked the fuses. The fuel pump relay is fine. The truck cranks fine, but will not turn over.

Fuel Pressure- Currently unknown. I do not have a pressure gauge and cannot locate the schrader valve to test it if I had one. Where do I look for this?

I have also tried resetting the inertia switch. No luck. Once I can test pressure, I'll know if the pump is out or not.

Spark- Plugs were replaced after we noticed a gap bordering on .080" Plugs looked worn, but not damaged or any negative conditions. I don't have a spark tester to verify it has spark. I'm about to try pulling one and cranking while it's out of the block to observe it.

Air- No issues noted. Filter is clean and the truck was having 0 issues yesterday.

Cranking- Oddly the truck will continue to crank for about 5-10 seconds after releasing the key. I'm not sure why this is or if this is even related. The truck seems to have a pre-set crank time until the truck stops trying to turn over.

Ford Excursion :: Growling Sound When Let Off Go Pedal

2 weeks ago I had some poorly installed spring shims start to slip out, the last day I drove the truck before parking it to wait on parts to arrive I started to hear this sound as I let off the go pedal. New shims were installed yesterday but I still have this sound. I had never heard it before the day mentioned above. It only lasts for a second or so and only when letting off the gas at above 30 mph, at very low speeds and let off gas no sound. Here is the link to a really short video, hopefully you can clearly hear the sound twice in the clip, I am doing 40 mph and feathering off the gas. Phone is laying in cargo area so there is no picture, just sound. What is that sound?
