My 1999 Ford F350 Dually 4x4 started making a grinding noise every once in a while about 3 weeks ago. Now it is doing it quite often, randomly as I am driving. I do notice the noise stops when I stop the truck, or when I flip the switch to 4x4 and back while driving.
View 1 RepliesI've had the 450 a little over two years. Its used 95% of the time for hauling trailers, including the toy hauler. Has not given me a single problem since day one and now has around 21,000 on the odometer.
Lately I've noticed a "grinding" sound coming from the front end somewhere. It is most apparent when I'm turning at slow speeds; especially left. To describe it would be similar to worn out brake pads or maybe a wheel bearing going bad. It does it whether I'm on the brakes or not.
2002 Ford 7.3L 2WD 200K miles ....My starter was making a grinding noise and the bolts had backed out. Wound up replacing the starter all together. Seemed to work for a little while and then went back to making the grinding noise again. I took the starter back and got a warranty replacement and took it to the shop last week to have it installed with lock-tite. It worked perfectly for a few days and then went back to grinding again yesterday afternoon. Why it is still doing it? I bought a new Duralast Gold 5154 starter from Autozone.
View 1 RepliesMy 2006 F350 is giving me grey hairs. I'm trying to figure out what's going on with it. I have been getting an occasional (more often than not) grinding noise from what seems to be the front of my truck. It will do it from a stop, under light, moderate, or heavy acceleration. Doesn't matter. If I let off the throttle momentarily it will stop until it shifts and will grind again through all shift points it seems.
Logic says it's got to be the wheel bearings or locking hubs. I recently did both on both sides to no relief. Because this is an 06 it had a different hub set up then the previous years which I've read a lot of info about (needle bearings). It doesn't make a lick of difference if hubs are locked or on auto. If in 4x4 (ESOF) or 2wd.
As mentioned I replaced both wheel bearings with FORD parts and both locking hubs From FORD as well. (Small fortune). Axle u joints seemed tight. Greased me up but no play.
I replaced both front bearings, calipers, brake pads, now I have a grinding noise on the left side front stops sometimes when you step on the brakes? 1999 F350 ...
View 6 RepliesHave an f350 4x4 diesel that when I drive slow and especially turn to the right it makes a grinding noise. It seems to either go away or just gets muffled by road noise when cruising. The ball joints were bad so I replaced them and I figured with this especially when I turn right it had to be a wheel bearing so I replaced both of them and still same thing. Don't want to throw money at it hoping to fix the issue. Also front duff is full of oil.
View 5 RepliesI got a 2001 f350 got a noise in my left front wheel i know its not the wheel bearings, it only makes the noice when the locking hub is unlocked i did jack the the truck up and spun the wheel got a faint grinding noises form what seems like the locking hub so my question is bad locking hub or needle bearing holding the axle shaft??
View 3 RepliesWent on a 400 mile trip today and noticed some strange noises. The rig is an 06 F250 lariat, V10, Zf6, SC, LB and only has 43k miles. It behaves normally except when coasting down a hill at 65+ mph, and it doesn't matter if I'm in neutral or overdrive, it makes a feint grinding sound that gets louder as speed increases. Maybe grinding isn't the best word to describe it, I'd say a cross between humming and light grinding. As soon as I give it any throttle or put any load on the tranny is goes away. It's really freaking me out as I just got the truck a month ago and I know the ZF6's are almost bulletproof.
View 14 RepliesI recently noticed my truck (2006 f250 v8) making some clicking noises on really sharp turns and also horrible grinding when stopping (like the brake pads were shot).
I replaced the pads a couple years ago, so I didn't then they were bad, but I took a look tonight. What I found was a couple of seals blown on both sides!
What these are and how this might have happened? They look the same on both sides. How do I replace them?
2001 f250 7.3 crew
So, Saturday my abs lite comes on. Later that day I hear metal to metal sound for a couple of secs then it stops. Then the next day while driving I get intermittent sounds that sound like I'm dragging metal down the pavement. I see nothing but I'm thinking hub bearing. (Needle)
I remove the hub assembly from the knuckle and can find nothing wrong. I even picked up a new hub just on case. Now I'm stumped. Can't figure out what the sound was or is. Axle has a little play going into the housing but figure it would have due to the only thing holding it in place is the hub.
The only thing left in the area that could make the sound is major --the actual gears to to the front end. If the bearing isn't causing the metal grinding sound I've no other idea other than that....
The issue is with my 2000 F350 crew longbed V10. Other than a BTS trans put in a little over a year ago, and FoMoCo motorsports headers, the whole truck is bone stock. Oh, it has that fantastic auto-hub thing with the fake locking hubs and the little switch on the dash (I'd love to convert it to a manual shifter...?). 174k on chassis, so things need to be done, 40k on engine, 3k on BTS 4r100.
Yesterday I was running around town, made a stop, and when I started moving again got a loud grinding from the front axle. Thought maybe I'd picked up a rock in a caliper or something, so I jumped out and checked everything, no joy. Moved forward, there it is again. No vibration, but loud enough (or telegraphing enough) to hear clearly in the cab. Let the truck roll forward, popped in to neutral, noise fades away. Back in to drive, there it is. So, now I know it's trans/t-case/driveshaft/related. I recently put new vacuum lines in, checked all the connections, and pulled, cleaned and lubed the hubs.
And since the trans is a nearly new BTS that is working just find, I'm narrowing the search to the hubs, drive shaft, t-case.
Get home (noise abates above 30mph, or everything else drowns it out), crawl under, and find the front driveshaft is locked. Ok, stuck hub? Pull out both the fake locking hubs, and now the shaft turns. I can turn each front axle by hand at the u-joint, and I kinda hear a faint grinding on the right side (will bad needles make noise only under a load from the trans and not coasting in neutral?), and when I swing the drive shaft around the left axle moves, right doesn't, etc etc.
I'm going to pull the drive shaft today and check the U joints, and drive a bit to see if the noise is still there, but I am thinking I might have some bad needles on the pax side axle...
I have a 2004 5.4 power f350 that makes a fog horn pitched howling sound at idle. First instinct was a pulley. Started it with belt off and its obviously something else because it still made noise. Traced it down to a resonating sound from the intake. Specifically the hose from the IAC to the air cleaner.
From some googling, i decided to change the IAC. No real change. So I took off the resonator tube and thoroughly cleaned it, took off the throttle body and cleaned it, took off the top snout part of the intake and cleaned that put in a new air cleaner (the glue was separating on the old one) and reset the battery. Still makes noise at least 85 percent as loud as when i started. Am I missing something?
My buddy's 2001 7.3L F350 has had 3 transmissions. Rebuilt and used. Once the new trans is in he goes like 15 miles and then is starts shifting hard and grinding gears. What this could be?

View 3 RepliesI have a 2003 6.0l did a rebuild on it. Got it all back together runs ok, but the turbo is making noise. I can unplug the actuator and the noise stops. How can I check the actuator. now the noise is of course when it is running.. but unplugged the noise stops.
View 2 RepliesSo when my hubs are locked they make a popping noise. Not when I'm turning like a 4wd would but all the time. And then when I turn on my ESOF in the cab something makes a horrendous noise like its binding up really bad. When I unlock my hubs and turn off my ESOF it all goes away. My 4wd does not engage without the hubs locked. I have the warn standard manual hubs. I'm not sure how to check to see what's messed up.

S, when I flip the switch back to 2 wheel drive everything, seems ok at first, but within a mile or two I will hear this grinding coming from the front that sounds like the gears aren't completely disengaging. The inky thing that prevents this grinding from happening is switching back into fire wheel drive and keeping it there. What might be causing it to not stay disengaged ?
View 1 RepliesI noticed the front diff of my truck was whining, so it decided to take a look. I noticed that the passenger side hub would not unlock when it was in the lock position. My truck has the manual floor shifted 4x4 and the manual hubs, not the ESOF. I removed the locking hub from the hub bearing assy and I noticed that the axle shaft still moved when i spun the wheel. I know the manual locking hub is trashed (pieces fell out when i removed it from the truck) but does the fact that the axle shaft still spins in the assy with no hub installed also mean that my hub bearing assembly is trashed and warrants replacement?
Finally, the number one most annoying thing with this "new to me" truck, is this noise in the steering column. It is very hard to describe, but when slowly turning the wheel, either left or right, it will produce a groaning/grinding sound that CAN be felt in the steering wheel. There is a roughness/vibrating/binding type feeling in the wheel when this noise is made. I lubricated the boot that goes through the firewall, and the spring around the shaft behind the turn signal switch with silicone spray and the noise goes on. It really feels like it is somewhere in the column, but as I said before I do not know anything about these superdutys. I work for chrysler and I have never experienced anything like this on a dodge truck.

Well, I've seen a lot of posts for this but all seem to be geared to 4WD trucks.
I have an 04 250 KR 2WD. I get a sensation of popping/clunking in the LF area when I stop and start like the front axle is moving. Also, at about 50MPH, I get an oscillating hum/vibration in the same area. I've already checked everything and it's all tight, as far as I can tell.
When having the fuel filters changed, I noticed the truck "drooping" on the right side. Coincidence? I have already replaced and repacked the bearing on the LF wheel.
Have a rear wheel bearing making some noise. A friend told me that it is always the outer bearing that goes first . Can you replace the bearing without replacing the race?
View 14 RepliesI have a 2016 F250 extended cab with 8 foot bed with snow plow and camper package currently less than 2500 miles on it. Every once in a while when I make a turn (typically a left hand turn) I will here a brief noise that sounds like a rubbing or "squawk" noise. The noise doesn't seem to be related to the turn so much as to the roll of the truck when it unloads / loads the suspension. I'm guessing it might be related to sway bar bushings or something similar, but I just don't know.
I have tried to find a stretch of road near the dealer where I can make the noise happen so I can take a tech for a ride so I can let them hear exactly what I hear, but as hard as I try I cannot reproduce the noise consistently.
I have visually checked underneath and I do not see anything wrong and I suspect it's not serious, but I'd like to know the cause and obviously correct the problem.
