My 2004 Volvo S60 has 99,000 miles on it. Just today it started making a quiet noise like an electric golf cart when I accelerate. Also just today it developed a quiet grinding noise when I turn the wheels (but only if the car is moving). I just had a clutch replaced by on the a/c compressor and I have my car serviced according to schedule. What the problem(s) could be?

View 1 RepliesI recently bought a 2004 XC90 T6. It has several issue and one strange issue is the sluggish performance: the vehicle sort of hesitates, requires quite a bit of acceleration effort to get up to speed, feels 'heavy', and in general does not seem to have the right amount of power. What makes the issue strange is that performance improves, noticeably, when the car is starting to run out of fuel, or when the "low fuel" light comes on. It is not a placebo effect: i've verified it several times that soon after the light is on, the vehicle becomes a lot more responsive, accelerates well, engine seems to sound quieter a little even.
I do not know much about cars. I am slowly learning after purchasing this vehicle. I verified that the air filter is clean. It has synthetic oil put in. I recently changed the spark plugs (very proud of that), that did not seem to improve the performance. My plan is to purchase and configure VIDA diagnostic tool and scan the vehicle while driving. It might also be worth mentioning that the vehicle is getting very poor mpg, averaging to 6 km per little.
One important note: the MAF sensor is faulty: i drive with it being unplugged, however when it is plugged in i experience the same as described above. I know it is faulty because when it is plugged in and the car is started up, the RPM goes to 2000+ and there for up to a minute or longer. If the MAF is unplugged this does not happen.
It makes knocking noises from all four corners, but mainly, when I make a hard right turn and it knocks it feels like the guts is going to fall out of it. It leaks tremendous amounts of oil from one side of the car to the opposite under the engine, but on checking the oil level, it does not require much topping up. Sometimes when making a hard turn, it's like there is no power steering. After spending copious amounts of money on it, and the problems not going away, the mechanic said to get rid of it. Also, when unlocking the doors manually or by remote, the back left passenger door makes a loud electrical buzzing noise that only started happening after the mechanic fixed the warning lights that kept coming up. That door no longer opens from the outside which means it won't pass a warrant. It was suggested it might be the solenoid? After getting into the car, you can hear a buzzing coming from around the radio area, and I haven't even inserted the key yet. It's such nice looking car and when it drives right, is awesum..
View 1 RepliesI have noticed that recently my engine seems to be coming on when I accelerate from a stand still even with very slow acceleration.
For example today: battery over 50%, foot off break and onto gas very gentally, 0 to 10 in about 4 seconds at about 8 mph I feel the engine kick in.
Over the last few days it has seemed like the engine has been running a lot in town or when moving slowly in heavy traffic.
If I press the ev button I can accelerate quiete aggressively before the engine will start.
I have a shudder that happens when turning right at a grade of about 10% while accelerating, and only on that condition. While making a routine drive somewhere, there's a turn with that one condition. Every time it shudders. It doesn't bother me because it happens so rarely...

I've read the TSB on it, and I'm wondering how much it'll cost to get the clutchpacks replaced in the rear differential.
View 14 RepliesMy sister's 1991 Volvo 240 automatic. She is scared to drive it. When we push the accelerator fully down while in park the car makes a sound of accelerating hard and decelerating, it occasionally makes the sound of a backfire. All the sounds are coming from under the hood. When in drive it will not actually accelerate past first gear, it will buck back and forth, and still makes the sounds. Its almost like a shutter. Reverse is the same. We recorded the sounds.
View 3 RepliesI have had to return my V50 twice for ABS associated problems. The first time to change a speed sensor then to replace the passenger side front hub. Now the car is making a soft shhhhhh sound for a split second whenever I drive off. According to the car manual on page 8, the car tests the ABS system "when the car first reaches the speed of 12 mph... The brake pedal will pulsate several times and a sound may be audible from the ABS control module. This is normal."or so the manual says.
My pedal has never pulsated except when I was having problems with the ABS system. In Honolulu, there is only 1 Volvo dealer and according to them the shhhh sound is normal. The repair tech went so far as to take me for a drive in a new 2011 V50, which did make the same sound. I am concerned only because I feel the braking system is important to me and the history of ABS issues. Volvo Customer service deferred to the dealers' service center. Should I take it in because the brake is not pulsating.
I have an 2001 S 80, T6, with 74K miles. I love the car but have had an issue with it since I bought it in 2004. I hear random clunks, pops, and bang noises in all 4 corners. I can't recreate the noises, they just occur randomly. But they can be loud! I have had the dealer inspect it a few times always telling me that everything looks okay.

Inserted the key and turned over but instead of starting it made whirring robot noises and read "brake failure message" and "immobilizar" after turning key to off position. It's really cold out. 0 degrees. What's the next move?
View 2 RepliesI have been experiencing pinging and crackling noises on acceleration from my vehicle it was purchased from the dealers May 2012. The problems started in October and I have been back and forth with the dealers for the same problems over and over and getting additional problems. Not to mention they keep saying that the problem is fixed and as I leave the compound I hear the noises.
I took it to have an independent scan from the dealer as it is now 5 months of run around with the issue not being resolved and I found out I have a bad ac compressor, steering rack and shock mount.
I have an '04 TRD Doublecab 4x4. I first started hearing a "clunk" upon acceleration, but only occasionally. It started getting worse and would happen pretty much every time I accelerate (although it never got louder, just more frequent). It usually only happens after a full stop (or near stop like in stop an go traffic), and I'd hear it pretty much right when I step on the gas. It seems like it has something to do with the A arms moving forward and back. When you accel, the rear wheels push the vehicle, essentially "sucking" the front wheels back slightly. When in 4wd, the noise is still there. It is quite obvious it's coming from the front right corner. I'm usually pretty handy with a wrench, so I decided to swap the upper A-arm bushings and upper ball joint (ball joint was leaking grease). Noise is still there. I ran out of time/motivation, so I took it to the Toyota dealer.
Here's what they did: -replaced front right coil-over, said it was "loose". That didn't work, so they put the old one back on. -tightened bumper etc..., didn't work. -then they removed the REAR drive-line and put it in 4x4 and drove it around. They say that "fixed" the problem since the noise went away. They were pretty adamant it was the drive line, but I didn't believe them since the noise is OBVIOUSLY coming from the front right. It just seems odd that it'd be the drive line. I took it home and tried what they said, I took the drive line off and drove it around in 4wd. They weren't lying, the noise went away. But since a good friend has an identical truck (but an '03) I switched our drive lines and the noise came back (HA! I was right!!). Driving in "front wheel drive" (no drive line) makes the front wheels "pull" the truck forward, vs in rear wheel drive, the rear wheels "push" the truck, and thus the front wheels will move backward slightly because of wheel/bearing friction.
I think it has something to do with when the front wheel is forced "backwards" but as far as I cal tell, all the suspension components are intact and show no signs of looseness. I can now occasionally hear the noise when under slight accel going over studder bumps like street reflectors or something (but only rarely, it's almost impossible to duplicate that on command. Makes me think a suspension piece is loose (shock/spring or loose bushing), but I NEVER hear the noise under braking, and rarely hear it on those studder bumps (and only for a split second). If it were a loose bushing, wouldn't I hear the clunk under accel AND decel (A arm moving back and forth)??? So I'm basically stumped (so was the dealer!). Ball joints appear fine, wheel bearing has no slop (that I can tell), and it has brand new upper urithane bushings and a new upper ball joint. I KNOW it's not the shock/spring, b/c I even swapped the left/right, and the noise is still there (and didn't move to the other side).
Over New Years I had to engage the full-time 4x4 button on my 2003 Explorer 4WD. Shortly thereafter I started noticing an airplane propeller noise that comes and goes with acceleration. It's pretty loud. It has not affected mileage or dashboard engine indicators. Tires still have 40% left, not them. Have I ruined an axle or something? There is a rear end whine that Ford says is endemic to this model and year, but I think they are not related.
View 1 RepliesI own a 2002 Pontiac Montana van with 36,000 original miles. The past year it started making a loud whining noise that seems to come from the rear of the vehicle. It seems to be worse in summer than in winter. It iis really loud when turning into a parking lot or when turning sharply to go thru a drive thru at a restaurant. I have taken it to several mechanics and also to a dealership, and no one seems to be able to find the problem.
View 4 RepliesOkay so I recently replace the rear shock absorbers and now every time I take a corner or when I'm going on a surface that's not flat or just if I go over a bump too quick. I here squeaking sounds I replace the shock absorber as well as the strut mount to no avail I've found the noise I've located location of the squeak if where coil meets the mount. I don't want to replace the coil it does look like it might need some replacing the protective metal sheet is gone on the top some of the bare metal is exposed but I would hate to replace the spring and have noise again

Saw this topic addressed, but not resolved to my satisfaction, in a post made some years back by the owner of an '03 Corolla. The comments suggested a water leak was the cause. But the sound is definitely DRY (think Etch-A-Sketch vs. waterbed). And the small amount of water that is leaking on the front passenger side floor didn't start until about a month after we started hearing the noise.
My VERY amateur guess is that it is some sort of breach in the air bag system, since that's where the noise sounds like it's originating. I searched the internet and didn't find anything on this topic of a sand noise coming from the vicinity of the glove compartment. Since the local Toyota dealer service department also thinks it's a water leak (not covered by our warranty, apparently) and that it could be potentially very expensive to locate and fix....
What would casue a clicking noise (like a sewing machine)under acceleration for the first several miles on a cold morning (50 degrees or below, we live in Louisiana)? Car is 2006 Chrysler 300C with 5.7L Hemi motor, 90,000 miles, all lifters replaced last summer - noise was apparent before new lifters. Dealership is stumped - they do not believe it is a problem with new lifters.
View 3 RepliesMy 2007 Camry makes clunking noises when I turn the steering wheel to the left mostly. This happens most often when the weather is warm and hot but not during the winter time.
The noise seems to come only from around the steering wheel area inside my vehicle. Hence, I don't think it has to do with the CV Joints or anything like that but the steering wheel unit.
Mazda5; 2010; 105,000 miles.
Recently, our Mazda has started making a subdued grinding sound. It happens only when accelerating from idling to 10 miles per hour. It does not occur over 10 mph, in neutral, or park. It doesn't happen when starting the car or in reverse either. according to my wife, it does happens when turning right at slow speeds, but not left.
We have just driven it to our mechanic but it may take a couple days before they are able to look at it.
I have 2005 Chevy Malibu that has been making slightly metallic thud noises while turning. The car does not need to be in motion, but will make the noise in both forward or reverse in both directions. The noise is gradually increasing in loudness. I have inspected the CV boots and verified that this car has electric power steering assist. The dealer would not look at it, stating that the "Malibu's do this". Additionally the service rep stated that "if he had it checked out they would not find anything anyway." This noise does not sound like anything that should be ignored and sounds like major failure / safety issue pending. I can find no consensus on what might be wrong?
