I was put on alendronic acid for osteoporosis but it had horrendous side effects so stopped taking it and talking to GP tomorrow but hoping I can achieve some protection from high dose Vit D3 and some calcium. Has anyone else on here had a problem with alendronic acid and found a good SAFE alternative?

2 years ago I was started on AA because after a 2nd THR I had a fracture during exercises {NHS}. I demanded a DEXA and it showed Osteoporosis.
Fracture of the greater trochanter bone which won't heal and is leaving me on crutches permanently and with a lot of pain because it will never heal..
The AA made me very queasy, it was changed to another one with the same effects so eventually the GP put me on Bonvita {don't know if anyone else is on it} it's a once a month tablet not once a week. The thinking was that if I was going to be queasy at least it would be only once a month not every week.
I know the bisphosphonates can cause aches and pains but I had so many to start with I don't know what is what. I have arthritis in my hips, lower back and ankle. I have kypho scoliosis, this fracture from the greater trochanter bone etc etc.
Recently My leg has been sore, kneecap, back of leg, side of leg, it moves about.
Today I was supposed to take my Bonviva and forgot. It was thinking about this that made me think had those tablets anything to do with it.
First GP said it was a pulled hamstring, second GP said it was inflammation and put me on an extra Naproxen and made an appointment for the physio. She doesn't seem to really know and gave me exercises to do and told me not to wear such flat shoes.
So I just got blood tests back and my vitamin d was 26 which is low and my calcium was 10.3 which is a tad high. I am 25 year old female. Should I be concerned about hyperparathyroidism?? I didn't get my PTH checked but my thyroid is normal. I don't know if they have anything to do.
View 2 RepliesI have nearly all symptoms of a bad parathyroid. I am changing doctors as I am not pleased with his responses. My parathyroid hormones have been high for two years+. My calcium level stays at 10-10.4, with anything over 10.5 being considered high. Do I just go to a surgeon or what do I do? With sudden symptoms beginning over two years ago, I feel it is a bad parathyroid. In my last blood work, my VIT D was even LOW, which I understand can also be a symptom.

View 2 RepliesI have had a raised parathyroid hormone blood result recently also a raised calcium in the blood result. I had raised calcium levels several years ago but after a scan of my parathyroid glands which showed no growths it was put down to lack of Vitamin D and called secondary parathyroidism
I was told to increase my Vitamin D levels which I did and my calcium level dropped. I have continued on the supplementation. I have severe sleep problems, am tired and grumpy, my hypothyroidism been under control for the last 8 years. I am borderline diabetic. Almost 73 years old.
My wife got gout in her foot yesterday after eating mushrooms, I believe there is a connection.?
View 1 RepliesI have been taking alendronate tablets for several months and only last week decided that they are having an effect on my heart. I always take one Friday morning and on Saturday my heart seems to really thump every so many minutes. On taking my pulse I realised I was missing the odd beat. Then I realised that this "thumping" got less as the week went on, until on Thursday it didn't happen at all. I didn't take a tablet last Friday and have no recurrence of thumping or missing pulse beats since last Thursday. It is such a relief as I was getting quite worried. Doctor says she can give me a different tablet but I am wondering if I will get the same reaction. Has anyone else had this problem?
View 1 RepliesHas anyone been successful using natural remedies such as lemon juice and apple cider vinegar in lowering urine calcium and uric acid levels? After several episodes of gross hematuria it was determined that I have bilateral stones. A 24 hr urine test showed elevated calcium and uric acid. I was placed on potassium citrate and hydrochlorothiazide but the medicines have horrific side effects. Also, has anyone experienced elevated blood glucose levels and elevated LFT's after taking these medications?

I have been on Protonix (proton pump inhibitor) for well over 25 yrs. Four years ago I developed constant diarrhea that was later diagnosed as gallbladder problems and had it removed per Dr's orders. The diarrhea continued afterwards though and the Dr said it was now IBS-D. It just seems like they are guessing as I go along here. I did some research and found that constant use of PPI's can cause LOW acid in the stomach and therefore increasing malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, also causing severe diarrhea. I believe this has been my problem all along considering I was just found to be deficient in Zinc & D. Diarrhea, hair falling out, uncontrolled blood sugars and now hypothyroidism are my symptoms. I have so many questions. Has anyone had this problem with PPI's? Has anyone tried to stop? I know it's very hard to do. I'm told having low acid in the gut, even though you supplement, doesn't work to increase your minerals/vitamins. Just looking for answers and feeling like crap.
View 1 RepliesI think it would be kind to warn people who are prescribed alendronic acid that one of the side effects is hair loss. I took four doses each one week apart. As a result I have bald patches. Friends who also took alendronic acid have general hair thinning. It was only after I lost hair that I checked the side effects of alendronic acid.
View 1 RepliesI was diagnosed with with B12 and Vitamin D deficiency. Both levels quite low. I have been taking my Vitamin B12 shots for three weeks now. Also I am on supplements for Vitamin D 60000 IU once a week. Most of my symptoms like tingling numbness and headache have gone. But since a few days i have been experiencing this weird feeling in my chest and entire body, the kinds when we are nervous, with palpitation while sleeping. I wake up and sit for sometime and then I seem to be fine. However, it happens again when i am about fall asleep. My GP said its anxiety and prescribed clonazepam. It did help for three days. But yesterday I tried sleeping without taking clonazepam and the same feeling of anxiety and palpitation came back. Is it a part of the vitamin D recovery process? I don't want to take clonazepam regularly. Any suggestions?

Most if not all these meds have so many side effects and are even thought to cause further damage to the bone. There are a lot of doctors starting to promote healthy diet changes as opposed to taking meds. The old theory that milk and dairy promotes bone health is now thought to be a scam funded with trillions of dollars by the dairy industry. So I'm curious, has anyone tried a plant based or starch based diet to reduce symptoms or even reverse their Osteoporosis?

Earlier this year I went to the doc with lethargy, aches and pains, headaches, Backache, feeling sick, amongst a heap of other basic symptoms for a menopause check to which it came back as positive but they also tested me for low vit d which came back as deficient so checked my parathyroid hormone which was elevated. My Calcium they said was fine so iv been treated with a high dose of vit d pills for three months. Recent testing has shown my Calcium is still stable but my parathyroid has increased further but the doctor said she will have to do and enquires as to what to do next as she expected my parathyroid to balance out but as it isn't I haven't a clue what that all means if my Calcium is ok as I know they are all linked. Is there any clues or experience you can offer as to what it all means.

Reading the suggestions to taper off is helpful and I will use them. Have a hiatal hernia and acid reflux but think that it may impede calcium intake.
View 1 RepliesI'm 45, I started suspecting early menopause at the age of 37,which is when my symptoms started started including depression and anxiety, I have been on and off (mainly on) anti depressants since i was 39,I was 41 when my periods stopped altogether.
After 2 years of doctors advising me to go on hrt especially as i am early menopausal, i gave in 6 months ago and went on elleste duet. It has stopped my hot flushes, night sweats, joint pain, dry skin etc: which is all
good but I'm still not convinced i am doing the right thing,I am very concerned about the cancer risks so I am thinking of coming off them as well as my mini pill (which i take to control my endometriosis) I am mostly concerned about osteoporosis, and my question is surely if i take Vit D and Calcium every day I can protect my bones in the same way ?
I can't find ANYTHING that removes the pain! Co Codamol doesn't, the 'so called' pain relieving gels don't (I've tried 3 different types). Can anyone suggest anything else?
Yesterday I twisted my hips somehow as I got out of the chair, the pain was excruciating. Since then I can hardly walk (how does excercise, excercise fit in then?)
I had been doing so well, 20 mins walk per day (and I've always disliked walking!) - physiotherapy, etc.
I have general query regarding parathyroid disease in the context of women with 50+ years of age. Is osteoporosis a symptom of this kind of disease ? Or, does it need to be both vitamin-D3 & Ca to be high in Blood too ? For example, if x-ray shows osteoporosis & also vitamin-D3 (25 OH) is too low (i.e. < 15), can we simply rule out parathyroid disease here ? Or, to be sure, we need to test serum Ca as well ?

View 5 RepliesWhen taking ADCAL -D3 for Osteoporosis and THYROXINE for underactive thyroid, there should be a space of at least 4, yes 4 hours between these medications as side effects could be upset tummy, wind and constipation etc.
So tomorrow I will leave off the ADCAL-D3 for a few days to see if this is the problem.
