Undiagnosed Constant Water / Kidney Infections - Sever Back Pain

Apr 8, 2015

For the past few years now i have suffered with constant water infections, its always pain in my right side, sometimes i'm sick with it and my back feels like it could break. It can also go into my groin area and down my leg also. I've had CT scans and another type of test which all came back as normal which was last year. I don't understand how it can be nothing as the pain is horrendous and all they do is take a urine sample and give me antibiotics. Does anyone else suffer with this? I wasn't sure if it was when i drank alcohol which is very rare but sometimes i get a water infection and sometimes i don't. The hospital put me on antibiotics for 6 months changing them every 2 months and i still managed to get a water infection on them. I am now having blood tests again and will presume i may have to go for all scans again but just wondered if anyone has had the same problem and had any advice on what it could be or what i could do?

UTI :: Constant Kidney Infections - Antibiotics For Life?

I'm 23 and have had trouble with Kidney infections all my life.

When i was little i had trouble with wetting the bed until i was 8years old.

All my life i've had infections, some urine but mostly kidney. When i was 20 I developed acute pyelonephritis which overnight turned into septicaemia and i was rushed into theatre with suspected internal bleeding.

I've seen specialists in Dorset, Somerset and Gloucestershire and have had loads of scans and xrays which all confirm there is nothing wrong with my kidneys.

The only symptoms i get are pain (always always my left kidney only) and cloudy urine. I seem to get these about once a fortnight - i'm so sick of antibiotics (which don't even work that well anymore) that i've stopped going to doctors and just try to cope with it on my own by drinking loads of water and taking painkillers.

Its been suggested that i take a permanent antibiotic which i take everyday for the rest of my life - but i'm only 23 and i hate taking drugs for anything.

I worry that when i'm older i will get kidney failure. I just CANNOT believe that a normal healthy person can get this many infections and nothing be wrong? Or that there is nothing that can be done about it. The specialist in Gloucestershire told me "It's very common and unfortunately technology hasn't advanced enough to deal with the disorder, so there's nothing we can do".

I feel sick, tired and emotional everytime this happens and its so hard to cope with work, university, keeping a house and being a single mum to a 2 year old when i feel this ill. I manage but it makes me cry a lot.

Undiagnosed Abdominal Pain, Back Pain, Diarrhea, Fatigue, Loss Of Appetite

I'm 16 years old, and I have now been sick for over a month (I first got sick at the end of November). I have been experiencing stomach pain/discomfort that comes and goes. It is generally all through the middle of my abdomen, but I have also noticed that I sometimes get sharp, shooting pains on the left side. The pain is worse after I eat, and it doesn't matter what I eat, the pain is still there. I don't have much of an appetite, but I have been trying to eat because I know that I should. This is extremely difficult, though. I have lost almost 10 pounds in the past month because I haven't been eating much, and really don't feel like eating. I've also been having horrible diarrhea.. sometimes I will need to use the washroom three or four times a day. I have tried taking Imodium for the diarrhea, but I always end up extremely constipated.. and the diarrhea only returns (I might have one regular bowel movement, but after that the diarrhea just comes back). I'm exhausted as well. I just want to sleep all the time, and I find it hard just to keep my eyes open throughout the day. My lower back is also constantly aching.. I just do not feel well at all.

I have been to see my doctor 4 times because I just don't seem to be getting any better. He initially thought that I had a viral infection, but after I did not improve after two weeks, he decided to run some tests. I gave a urine sample and he said that I probably had a kidney infection (but he wasn't 100% sure because I had my period when I gave the sample). He put me on medication, and sent me for blood work. I also had to give a stool sample. All of my tests came back normal, but the medication didn't help at all. The next time I saw him, he said that I might have an ulcer, and put me on apo-omeprazole, which I have been taking for about two weeks now. I'm also on medication for a case of bronchitis.

I am incredibly frustrated because nothing seems to alleviate my symptoms. I have missed 15 days of school because I just feel terrible. My parents think that I might be making it all up, or that it's all in my head, and my doctor has suggested the same thing (he told me that there was "absolutely no reason" a person my age would be experiencing symptoms like this for so long. I am NOT making this up, and I know that it ISN'T all in my head. I just wish that someone would actually take me seriously and believe me when I say that something is wrong. I have an ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday, but I just don't know how to cope at school until then. I'm also scared that the ultrasound will come back normal, just like all the other tests I've had done. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I'm desperate for answers and ways that I can cope.. I want to get back to school and my life.

Undiagnosed Severe Left Flank Pain For Months - Kidney Related?

I have had severe left flank pain for 3 months now and still not been able to get a diagnosis. I am a 24 year old usually fit female.

The pain started towards the end of April while i was in work (an office desk job). It was on my left side in between my hip and ribs, spreading down to my groin. The pain got worse over the next couple of hours, and it has been a constant dull ache since then. The pain is most strong on the back of my left side but i can also feel it from the front.

I went to the doctors with this pain where i done blood and urine tests and got put on antibiotics for a suspected kidney infection, as well as codeine to ease the pain. The results came back with an apparent slight kidney abnormality showing, but a week later, i was still in a lot of pain and unable to move much, so i went back to the doctors where i got referred into hospital. I spent the night in hospital where i had more blood and urine tests, as well as an ultra sound. The hospital told me my results showed a UTI, but the ultrasound was clear, so i got put on another course of antibiotics and sent home. A week later, i was still in a lot of pain so i went back to the doctors where i was put on another (stronger) course of antibiotics for 2 weeks. The pain eased slightly above the groin, but the main pain on my left side was still the same.

My doctor then referred me to gastroenterology at the hospital where i had to wait weeks for an appointment, only to be told that he didn't think it was bowel or stomach related (as i can still eat and pass stools normally) and that i should have been referred to urology.

My doctor referred me to urology where the waiting list was 2 months, so i decided to get a private consultation with a urologist. The consultant done a urine test, which confirmed i had blood present in it. He went over my symptoms and suggested a CT scan in case i had a small kidney stone stuck which had been missed by the ultrasound. He was also concerned at my frequency as passing urine (this is usually over 20 times a day with anywhere between 3 to 8 times through the night). He referred me back to the NHS for the CT scan which i had a few weeks ago.

The CT scan results came back clear of kidney stones. My consultant now thinks the issue could be musculoskeletal but he still wants to see me to do some bladder studies as he is concerned about the frequency of urination. I have an appointment with my urology consultant for a few weeks time, but to see someone to investigate if the pain could be musculoskeletal there is a 3 month waiting list.

I am still in a lot of pain, both when moving and sitting (it never eases), and it is effecting my every day life. I can't go into the office to work due to the amount of pain i am in, i can't drive with it, and i haven't left the house the past few month apart from doctor or hospital visits. I am constantly feeling down and tired, and often get spells of dizziness and my eyes blacking out when i stand up (i am unsure if the tiredness and dizziness is related or not). I had a breakdown the other weekend where i cried for 2 days straight with the pain, the frustration of not being able to get a diagnosis, and not being able to do anything. I am worried that depression is kicking in with how long this has dragged on for.

I had no injury or knock to the area before the pain started. My mums side of the family also has a history of nephritis (kidney disease) with 4 of my aunt and uncles having it, but my urology consultant doesn't think there is a connection.

Is anyone able to provide any help or suggestions on what they think this pain could be as well as how to help ease it (the codeine doesn't help)? I feel like i have been passed around so many different people who still have no idea what is causing this pain.

Undiagnosed :: Abdominal And Back Pain After Eating Solid Foods

I'm getting a little desperate here. For the last four days every time I attempt to eat solid food within 20 minutes I get extremely severe pain that begins behind the lower section of my rib cage on the left side of my body. The pain continues to increase and within minutes all of the muscles in my mid back start cramping. The symptoms continue for anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours. When they ease, I'm left feeling nauseated and my back feels bruised from the cramping. I can drink liquids without any adverse effect as long as I drink them slowly, but even minimal attempts at solid food cause problems. For instance, I was able to have a bowl of tomato soup eaten slowly over the course of an hour without having problems, and I was able to eat a bowl of chicken broth very slowly without triggering any pain. However, when I attempted to eat a bowl of cream of chicken soup with small chicken chunks in it, I got the pain and back cramps. Even something as simple as a piece of bread or a few bites of saltine crackers is enough to trigger the pain. The doctors have no clue what's wrong. One of them even tried to say it was gas. Umm, no, it's not gas. And I don't think it's an ulcer. I've been on Prilosec for years for GERD, and the pain doesn't feel like it's actually in my stomach. It feels higher and more to the left than where my stomach is. Has anyone else had to deal with anything like this?

Disc Prolapse :: Sever Buttock Pain When Standing Up

For the last 3 weeks I am getting severe buttock pain when I stand up after sitting or lying on the bed. Thereafter when I walk for 2 min the pain subsides and I feel absolutely normal.

Again when I sit the cycle continues. Sometimes the pain moves from bottom to back of thigh.

I have consulted few doctors, one said Hamstring strain, other said SI joint and piriformis muscle issue and finally the last one said disc prolapse.

Has anyone experienced such issue before and if yes what was the diagnosis.

UTI :: Water Infections

I've been suffering from water infections since I was around 11/12 I am now almost 17 and recently have an infection weekly for the past few months. The doctors have given me endless antibiotics which one type I've become resistant to and the cranberry power things which you mix with water when I was younger. I literally have tried everything to avoid getting an infection including cranberry juice , barley water , water itself , cotton knickers, no perfumed products around the area , peeing straight after sex and nothing prevents it!! Really needing advice as the doctors will just give me more antibiotics also around November 2015 I had scans around my kidneys and back and everything was clear?

Kidney Disorders :: Protein In My Urine And Lower Back Pain

I saw my GP yesterday because I'm having very bad lower back pain mainly toward the right side and down my right thigh & leg. Its more painful when I want to pass water. My GP tested my urine and  and she said I have protein in it. I am now waiting to hear the result of the test. She thinks it could be a kidney infection, but has not prescribed antibiotics. Or it could be something to do with a Cyst I have in my Left Kidney.

I am so worried about this because of my age (72 in May). I was also diagnosed a year ago with HIATUS HERNIA, GALLSTONES, DUODENITIS & DIVERTICULITIS.

Kidney Stones :: Intense Back Pain Radiating To The Front

I woke up Monday morning with intense back pain that radiated to the front and cause sweating and nausea.  It lasted about 20 minutes and was gone.  I have had this about 5 or 6 times with months and even years in between.  This is the first time I went to the emergency room.  They worked me up for cardiac issue but found nothing thank goodness.  They did do a cat scan but said nothing about a kidney stone.  I am wondering if I could have passed a stone without knowing it or if the stone might be undetectable on a cat scan.  We have not been able to figure out what causes these episodes.

Kidney Stones? Nausea / Vomiting - Upper Back Pain Waves

I have had an achy upper back pain for a few days now. I was attributing it to having slept funny, but now I am thinking it was a warning sign I missed. I woke up at 2am with horrible nausea and sharp pain in my upper left back. It comes in waves and was so severe it brought tears to my eyes. I have had kidney pain from infection in the past and while different I think this pain may be kidney related too. I am trying to find some way to get comfortable enough to sleep since it is the middle of the night and I don't want to wake two sleeping babies and drag them to the ER. I tried calling the nurse helpline provided by my insurance company, but he just told me to try a heating pad and some Tylenol.
I have a lot of prescription pain meds in my medicine cabinet because I have had 2 c sections and another surgery within the last couple years and I hate taking pain meds... I took an oxycodone.  That along with a vibrating massage mat under my back seems to be helping with the pain for the moment, but the nausea is even worse now. Any suggestions for that? I just need to make it to morning so I can go to an urgent care clinic. There is no one to watch the babies right now and of course o would get sick on Sunday when my primary care doc is closed.

Alcohol And Recurrent UTI's And Kidney Infections

I have suffered for a few years now with my kidneys, first starting off with when I drank alcohol. A few days later I would get really ill with a kidney infection and given antibiotics. It then became more common to get them without drinking.  I would also inbetween this get recurring bladder infections.

I am 19, a female, and have had various tests (ct scan, dye put in my arm through a drip to see any problems clearer and a few ultrasounds) done to check the structure of my kidney is all okay and that there isn't any obstructions ( all seems to be okay, and they didn't think that it would be worth looking with a cystoscope just yet.) However something worth noting is that I always seem to have invisible blood in my urine that is discovered through dipstick tests. And recently my brother has been having the same kidney problems (kidney infection, especially after drinking alcohol).

I am also now on medication called 'Hiprex' it has antiseptic qualities to try and prevent getting UTI's/kidney infections however doesn't seem to be working as I still get them.

Really getting fed up now, as when I get ill with it I get super achy, all of my glands swell up, a dry mouth so constantly thirsty and weeing loads, especially at night, and dull aches in my back.

Once when passing urine I passed out from a pain in my right lower side. But like i said, no kidney stones or any problems structurally.

Has anyone else been going through this too? Any ideas what could be wrong?

Frequent Kidney Infections After Hysterectomy

In Jan '09 I was diagnosed with cervical cancer.  I opted to have a hysterectomy due to I was done having kids.  I had it done in feb '09.  Doctor said that everything look fine and sent me home.  I called the doctor's office daily complaining of pain. They told me I was being lazy and needed to get up and walk around more.  They said I was having gas pains.  Finally the doctor told me to get gas ex that would help.  I went back to work about 6 weeks later.  While I was at work I started leaking urine.  The next day I went back to the doctor (OB) and all he could say is I don't know what is wrong.  they but a catheter on me and I was still leaking around that.  They ran test after test.  Finally when that day was over they sent me home with a catheter and said get some rest come back tomorrow and talk to the urology department we have no clue.  I had 3 kids husband out of town working and I am in severe pain.  My mother in law took me to the doctor the next day and he said oh your ureter was damaged during surgery we just need to do a minor surgery to put a stent in there and you will be as good as gold.  They did the surgery that day.  When I woke up they told me that I had 15 mins to get my head on right cause I had to go to the hospital to have a nerostophy tube put in my ureter was actually cut in half.  I had no clue what was going on.  My mother in law took me over there where I was admitted into the hospital for my 2nd surgery that day.  When the doctors there but the tube in they hit my main nerve in my back so every time I would breathe I would get sharp shooting pains up my back.  I was sent home with cather and tube for 6 weeks.  then in 6 weeks I have a Ureter replacement surgery.  The doctor there did wonderful.  But to this day I get kidney infections VERY easily and I am ALWAYS in pain in my right side on my back right by my kidney.  I was wondering does anyone else have this problem?

Undiagnosed Chronic Kidney Stones Flare-ups

I'm 16 years old and suffering from what I've been told is medullary sponge kidney disease. I have been to countless doctors, including the mayo clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, Children's hospital in St. Louis, and many local hospitals. Every doctor that I've seen has thrown around many ideas of what my disease "could" be, but none of them have ever actually diagnosed me. It started out as a kidney stone two years ago, had gotten better on and off for the past two years. I had always had at least one kidney stone every six months or so. We call my kidney stone's "flare-ups" because when I get them, it is impossible for me to control the pain without being hospitalized. Also, the doctors have said they are not entirely sure that my pain is kidney stones. The pain is a burning, stabbing pain that goes down my right backside and to my lower stomach on the right side. The stones are calcium-oxalate and are usually small. In the past six months, I have been passing a steady amount of "gravel" in my urine, which is basically small stones. Therefore, I am in pain all of the time. I have been put on countless medicines such as potassium citrate and hydrochlorothiazide. Not to mention the pain medicines, I have found that only Percocet and Norco can even touch the pain. And Phenergan helps with the nausea sometimes. I throw up from the pain almost every other day; Some days I am unable to get out of the bed, eat, walk, and keep anything down. On top of all of that, I am unable to urinate on my own. I have to use a straight catheter 4-5 times a day. I have been unable to go to school, and have been put on homebound through my school. All of this has been very frustrating and we basically have no answers. I have recently had a cystoscopy to look at my bladder and ureter. The doctor said it was completely normal, other than that my ureter tube is smaller than normal. I need some way to cope with my pain and get a better quality of life.

EBV - RA/Fibro Flare-ups Due To Kidney Stones / Infections?

I have RA, fibromyalgia, and diabetes II. I have been dealing with kidney stones for 10 years. The last 4 years have involved kidney infections and hospitalization. Last year I was near sepsis and placed in the ICU. Since then I have been experiencing RA/Fibro flare-ups that are worsening. I have had mono 3 times (infancy, twenties, and early thirties). I am wondering if I have it again and whether the kidney infections caused it or were a result of the EBV in my system.
